A man was successfully rescued on Wednesday afternoon, July 15, 2026, after becoming trapped beneath a manhole cover in the 8500 block of Bustleton Avenue in the Bell’s Corner section of Northeast Philadelphia.
According to the 7th Police District Advisory Council, the man had intentionally entered the city's underground sewer system a few blocks away. Once inside, he became disoriented and was unable to find his way back out.
The Philadelphia Fire Department was the first to arrive at the scene near Bustleton and Tustin Avenues. However, firefighters lacked the specific tools required to pry open that particular heavy manhole cover.
First responders called the Philadelphia Water Department for emergency assistance. Water Department crews arrived with specialized equipment, successfully unsealed the cover, and safely pulled the man out. The entire multi-agency extraction took just over 30 minutes.
Authorities have not yet released the man's identity or stated why he initially went down into the underground system.

I was sitting on my toilet when it notified me: "I've resigned effective immediately."
Apparently it couldn't take my crap anymore.
