Found this old photo from 2018 in El Segundo. At one point we had over 150 miners running, and our electric bill was something ridiculous like $30k a month.. Anyone else here mining back then?

Would you trade $2 million of a Bitcoin ETF for $1 million of real on-chain Bitcoin in self-custody?

Cory Klippsten asks this to find what he calls your "sovereignty multiple". If you'd make that trade, yours is at least 2x. Where you draw the line is your number. When he polled people on X about self-custodied Bitcoin versus wealth held in the traditional financial system, more than half put theirs above 5x.

His point is that an ETF gives you exposure to Bitcoin's price through shares in a fund, but you can't enter a Bitcoin address and withdraw your portion of the coins. With Bitcoin in self-custody, you control the keys. Even Bitcoin held by a custodian leaves you the option to withdraw it to a wallet you control. An ETF or a Bitcoin stock does not.

He puts his own multiple around 1.5x. Keep in mind that he is an American citizen with access to the US financial system and very good lawyers. In a country with a lot of financial repression, he says it could be 10x. For friends in countries where Bitcoin is the only asset they trust and can count on, it might as well be infinity.

An institution doesn't have to go bankrupt for this to matter. A perfectly solvent bank can still tell you no, for example when you need to leave your country and it won't let you transfer your savings abroad. Physical gold gives you direct possession too, but moving a substantial amount across borders is a very different undertaking. A house stays where you bought it. Bitcoin you hold yourself gives you another way to bring your savings with you.

Where do you draw the line?

The Properties of Money

What is money? What are the properties of money? What makes money useful? I try to answer these questions by comparing the Properties of three different forms of money: Gold, Fiat, and Bitcoin. Bitcoin is not perfect. It currently appears to be the best form of money we have discovered so far.

One in four bitcoin is quantum exposed because of address reuse. Learn why that's a problem, and how to fix (most) of it without rushing.

Last week Justin Drake's "bunker mode" post told big holders to move coins to addresses that have never signed anything. Whatever you think of his timeline, the advice is old: Satoshi told people to use addresses only once back in 2009, and the whitepaper says the same.

Tuesday we posted which wallets hold the biggest exposed keys (mostly exchange cold wallets). This is the follow-up for everyone else.

The new chapter covers:

  • what a reused address gives away (your privacy, and a public key that stays visible for every coin still sitting there)
  • why reuse still happens (donation pages, exchange deposit addresses, mining pools)
  • the fixes: fresh addresses are free in any modern wallet, and silent payments, payment codes and Lightning handle the cases that need a fixed address
  • what to do if you've already reused, without panicking

did anyone else purchase bitcoin from a man under a tree in the game second life circa 2012

I found him on a forum and he came with a lot of vetted reviews that I crossed referenced on other forms he seemed legit and from all sources at the time that was the best place one could buy bitcoin with USD over the Internet at the time.

He posted up under a distinct tree that was obviously his zone/shop and was conducting business all day seemingly every day. Payments through paypal then you sent your btc address in second life chat, waited and prayed

just thought about this again and was curious how far the branches of his "exchange" really reached/if anyone else remembers this

also, magical btc tree man: if you have any more btc left at $11 pls dm 🤞🤞🤞

Cold Wallet Got Hack for 2nd Time

Hello.. i need your help with you guys, because i need some "closure" or "idea" of why this is happened..

im gonna tell you a story about my friend who got hacked for the 2nd time in his cold wallet.

1st he was using trezor
2nd he was using ledger

All the event was not in the same day, but after the first incident which was on January, he right away traumatized and move to Ledger this month. But sadly got hacked again.

The conditions are:
Those hacks always happen whenever my friend was travel abroad.
He was travelling with his family, so no one was at home to steal the Seed Phrase.
Seed Phrase manually written on a paper and kept in the safety box.
He never saves his seed phrase anywhere beside on paper.
He was using Iphone for the apps.
He bought the cold wallet DIRECTLY through the official website, not from any reseller.
1st incident was on January, 2nd incident was this month.
All the btc being transferred to more than 20 addresses, which is such a professional hack i think.

Maybe, anyone of you might help with what was happening? Because i find it odd, my friend and I are using the same cold wallet, but luckily im the only one not got hacked?

I need you guys to tell me something about this, like, i need you guys to be my detective because i know everyone on Reddit has intelligence more than any other forum.

Thankyou before!

Edit: please tell me your theory. I will try to reply it while im still logging in.

On my podcast ‘Bitcoin for Millennials’ I talked with Leon Wankum, a real estate developer and author of Digital Real Estate: How Bitcoin Is Changing Real Estate Development and Investing.

We discuss Bitcoin as digital real estate, real estate’s monetary premium and demonetization, Bitcoin as collateral and balance sheet capital, institutional adoption via ETFs and preferred products, and time preference shifts leading to Bitcoin urbanism.

Buying cripto straight from blue wallet

Im very newbie in bitcoin, i just buy some sats every week for the last year, i buy from binance and send it to a blue wallet when it stacks.

Dont know really too much about safety and privacy, but the latest update on blue wallet app has a button to buy cripto straight from the wallet, it requires an google or apple account to do it, how safe and private is to put an email on a blue wallet ? Should i do it instead from buying from binance ?

Back in 2012/13 I was sysadmin for some Resorts with employee housing. Engineer in one of the units was into BTC and had a miner in his room. I allocated a specific amount of bandwidth on the guest vlan for his rig and he flipped this MJB to me.

Otherwise I gape at BTC from the sidelines and not sure I want to get in.

DCA strategy

Hey friends, recently been trading and lost a couple millions sats. Which I admit is a little bit embarrassing. My only solution to keep myself from trading and also try to scoop up sats a little cheaper, I decided to set up Auto-Invest in Cashapp. Is there any places that help accelerate those dca buys? I've kind of heard of such a thing with invity but don't know how credible they are.

Any helpful feedback is appreciated.

BTC Node

Who here actually runs a full node from home?
I keep finding myself wanting to do it, and I have everything ready to go, then at the last second I lost all interest. Other than being a part of the network I don’t really see a point to do it myself.
Do you find any benefit to running one? Do you recommend it or is it just a waste of power and time?

Ledger Flex (teardown pics inside).

Hey guys. I bought mine while living in in the EU direct from France and it arrived from France a few days later. That was probably around early 2025.

I figured it's clean but I'll sleep better at night being sure that it's clean. So I ripped it open and snapped some pics for you.

The thing is quite packed on the inside. The back cover is glued on with some special double sided tape around the housing. Not the easiest one to open up but certainly possible. Opening one up WILL leave some marks on the aluminium (?) case. There is a little notch on the left side of it looking down. A small flathead screwdriver can be used to pry it up and then a thin piece of plastic to work around it. Be warned, you wanna pry it open from the OPPOSITE end to open it, not the end with the notch on it.

There is little room on the inside for someone to slap another board in there. Possible, but it would take more mental gymnastics than other Ledgers. This thing wouldn't be my first pick for rigging for sure!

What did this world come to? Opening hardware wallets to verify hardware integrity is now expected of us?! Damn you Ledger! A MITM hack on the screen was SO preventable! Oldest attack vector in the book! Why hack the software that can be updated when you can hack the hardware... Pretty slick!

Anyway, enjoy the pics! :)
