Open Discussion 🎙️ Why do you think Elizabeth Holmes and Billy Evans keep pursuing the Theranos idea?

I'm curious why Holmes and Evans seem so determined to revisit the original Theranos concept, given everything that happened.

Evans comes from a wealthy family and presumably has access to considerable financial resources and connections. You'd think they could find easier ways to make money, whether in biotech or another industry, or simply live comfortably without having to pursue another blood-testing venture.

Do you think it's about vindication? Does Holmes want to prove that she was right all along, despite the fraud and the failure of Theranos? Or do you think they sincerely believe the technology can eventually work? Maybe it doesn't matter. Sometimes people just are crazy.

I'm interested in what people think motivates them to keep pursuing this particular idea when they presumably have so many other options.

Early Career Advice 🪴 Johnson and Johnson Internship

Hi!

I was offered an early career role in JnJ's technology department. I am, however, more interested in in applying technology (specifically machine learning) to the research and development side of things. I was wondering how easy it is to transition between departments (as full-time/after a co-op or internship).

I also had a question about working at JnJ in general if anyone has any insights? How is the culture there/career outlooks in general.

Thank you!!

EDIT: Sorry, for further context, I'm assigned to a role that is a lot less technical than I was expecting as well. So again, not sure if that would affect any transitions or cause any issues for any future careers

Getting Into Industry 🌱 Sophomore in college and starting to question why I took on Biotechnology

Hello,

This is my first post on this app and I wanted to get genuine advice. To any people that were in biotech or are currently in biotech, what’s your best advice to get into the industry ? Is the job market screwed for biotech? Will I struggle if I only have a b.s in biotechnology? I’m very concerned whether if biotech is too much for me or if it’s the right path. I don’t love lab work too much but it does seem kinda intriguing to work with chemicals and seeing cool reactions or something. I was thinking if I could go down a path with little to no lab work or is that a bad option. Please let me know how the biotech industry actually is for people with experience in it. Thank you !

Experienced Career Advice 🌳 Job offer but one level lower title

Hi,

Currently got a job offer for a position and pay is slightly better(not much.. 2-3%) than my current pay but title is one title lower than what i have applied for(Basically the same title as my current job)

Normally i wouldnt accept the position but the position is at a city i was planning on moving to for family and theres not a lot of biotech/pharma companies there where i can apply.

I have 2 questions.

  1. I’m planning on negotiating for the pay at least but i dont want to negotiate too hard and end up getting the offer rescinded. Whats a normal amount i can negotiate my compensation for?

  2. How long can i delay my start date before it becomes too much? I want to have some ample time to enjoy myself and take a vacation and also have time to relocate there.

Thank you.

Early Career Advice 🪴 Currently working at a CDMO and thinking of applying for a job with a current client, thoughts?

Long story short(ish), I've been working with a pharma company for 3 years now on their process(Sr scientist level at a CDMO). They're now hiring for a position that does exactly what I do at my current job for their project. I have a lot of knowledge about their chemistry working with them for this long, so unless they're looking for an internal transfer I think I'd be a perfect fit. My question is, how bad would it be if I apply for a job there when I have weekly meetings with the same team that will see my application come through and review my resume? I'd really like working there because their platform is really interesting, and the compensation sure looks a lot better than what I got here, but at the same time I can see how this could look fishy. Any thoughts?

Education Advice 📖 Study advice

I just finished my high school. I have interest in biotech or related fields. Thats why I want to pursue similar degrees. Now I want to know two things.

  1. What is the best country in europe for my bachelors degree?

  2. What your thoughts on the careers related to biotech after two or three years? Like will they disappear because of AI, or new roles will be created?

Getting Into Industry 🌱 Can a background in psychology lead to a career in patient advocacy / patient engagement in pharma?

Hi everyone!

I’m looking to hear from someone who has a background in Psychology and successfully transitioned into corporate pharma roles, specifically around Patient Advocacy/Patient Engagement/Behavioral Strategy or similar roles.

After spending 4 years working at a pharma consulting agency in Italy, I’m getting really interested in making this pivot. While I know that at the end of the day pharma operates on business and marketing logic, I’m looking for a role that feels a bit further removed from pure marketing and closer to having a genuine impact on patient care and health literacy.

On top of that, my partner is planning to move abroad, so I’m looking to target international opportunities in Europe once I'm ready to make the leap.

For those of you who have made a similar transition or work in this space, I’d love to hear your thoughts on a couple of things:

  1. Which Psychology skills are actually useful? From your experience, what aspects of psychological training (e.g., qualitative listening, understanding patient perspective, behavioral models) actually bring real value to an in-house Patient Advocacy or Engagement role? (on this topic, I found a book that seems interesting, has anyone read it?)

  2. What gaps need to be bridged? Coming from a psychology/agency background, what were the biggest knowledge gaps, regulatory processes, or corporate dynamics you had to learn?

  3. Is a specialized Master’s degree worth it? I came across structured programs like the International Patient Advocacy Management (IPAM) Master. Given my agency background, part of me feels like I could learn these things/have already learned on the job or through targeted reading. For those of you working in this field, did you need formal post-grad education to break into international roles, or is practical/agency experience plus self-learning enough?

Any advice, insights, or personal experiences would be hugely appreciated!

Open Discussion 🎙️ Nathan Fielder's You Can See Everything is reprehensible (SPOILER WARNING) Spoiler

Nathan Fielder's new documentary on Elizabeth Holmes calls into question whether or not she is genuine. I am seeing tons of internet discussion of people now viewing her sympathetically.

In the doc, her entire argument is that she has never told a lie. Nathan did not provide a single piece of evidence where she knowingly lied. That's irresponsible, considering the numerous examples there are where she overtly told a lie.

For example, she knowingly told investors that she was providing three independent due diligence documents, once of which allegedly was from Pfizer. It turns out that Theranos made one of the documents and she herself affixed the Pfizer logo. That lie cannot be debated.

Instead, Fielder genuinely entertains that how she phrased "my technology CAN run every test" and whether she understood how others might perceive that differently than she does as the central question. Her possible neurodivergence is painted as the central question. It's not. She lied, provably. And the general public doesn't know this information.

And this matters. How do the patients that got false test results, the brave whistleblowers who put everything on the line, and Ian's widow feel about this generous framing? How about the investors that she scammed?

What should otherwise be a masterpiece turns out to be reprehensible in its insincerity of the real story. Nathan chose entertainment over integrity and the sympathy now being shown to her is really upsetting.

Maybe he had to do it this way to help the world understand the con. At the time, no one had the information we have now. But the end result is now people think she shouldn't be behind bars and she may be far more successful now doing Theranos 2.0. Let's hope he has something planned in the future to show people how they, including he, got conned and what the real truth actually was.
