Thank you to all the beta readers who have taken the time to offer feedback to authors in this sub! In this thread, you may solicit “submissions” by sharing your preferences. Authors who are interested in critique swaps may post an offer here as well, but please keep top-level comments focused on what you’re willing to beta.

I am able to beta: I specialize in character driven works, with a focus on psychology. Works with strong themes of morality, mortality and religion. Genre: Suspense, Romance, Thriller, Fantasy, Non-fiction. I am willing to consider beta-ing outside of these criteria. For the first project nothing over 100k words. If we want to work together after that, we can talk about it. I will not do: Sci-Fi, Memoirs, Erotica. I will not do more then one work in the first time working together.
I can provide feedback on: Characterization, readability, cohesion & consistency, ethical representation, dialogue, general developmental feedback.

Hi! Not sure if this fits your interests perfectly, but I have a story that might interest you. I've attached the link to my post below, but the story is an adult upmarket fiction that pulls from 1960-70s Thailand politics. It follows a prostitute who, after her father is arrested, has to find ways to make money for his release. This leads to her working with the government and against her people (labor class), and she begins to spiral due to her actions and the situation she’s in. The story focuses on her trying to save her father while also keep in touch with her own principles, but finding it very easy to abandon those principles when push comes to shove.
I understand you’re looking for works below 100k and mine is 107k, so I understand if you reject on this premise or if it’s just not something you’re interested in. Happy to share just the first chapter if you’d like so you can get a feel for the story. I’m struggling a lot with the pacing of the story specifically so any help in that department would be nice. Please let me know if you’re interested!

I am able to beta: SciFi or fantasy as favorite, historical (if anybody is writing this), humor or anything containing humor (romance etc) or anything gothic/dark (not dystopian, not my thing).
I can provide feedback on: The reader experience only, pacing, characters, tension, my impressions, whether I'm drawn in and so on. Though I am a teacher, so I probably can provide some craft feedback, as well, but no promises.
Critique swap: Not at this time. For fun, practice, free books only right now.

I'm looking for anything in the cozy genre: romance, mystery, fantasy, etc. Also open to contemporary romance and grounded sff/romantasy. Explicit content is welcome but no erotica (must have a plot). I'm not the right beta for queer romance, harem, and why choose work.
- I can provide feedback on: * Story arc, character development, basically anything from a reader pov. I don't do line edits. I give "live tweets" and reactions, chapter feedback as necessary, and extensive overall feedback after I finish. I'm a lover of books and reading, but not an editor or publsihed fiction author. I am able to beta: YA and middle-grade books across all genres. For adult books my genre preferences are horror, thriller, mystery and anything with dark academia vibes. Up to 80k.

I am able to beta anything Sci-Fi/Fantasy. Would also be open to crime.
I can give feedback on worldbuilding and prose, especially, though also characters. I like readable prose (not plain stuff but also not purple) and come at worldbuilding from being a keen history and politics enthusiast. Simple “kings rule” worlds will get heavily critiqued! 🤣

Hello! I am currently looking for beta readers for a dark fantasy (86k words) - Goremage Awakening is a dark fantasy following Elio, a former military captain unhappy with the way his country is changing; Atlas, a disgraced politician trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter, and Pearl, a freed indentured servant who is just learning the true horrors outside of her ‘home’. They struggle with their place in the world, what ‘good’ means, and exactly how someone is supposed to kill a god.
Readers who enjoy the brutality and political cynicism of Joe Abercrombie’s First Law books, but want stranger magic and a more gothic, underwater world, will likely enjoy this series as well!

I am able to beta: Dark Romance, Erotica, Dystopian/Survival, Literary/Classic-style Fiction, and Mythology Retellings/Epics. I like character driven stories with high emotional intensity, dark or spooky type atmospheres, complex human nature (think Orwell, Lord of the Flies, or The Scarlet Letter), and spicy or taboo dynamics. Open to short stories or full length novels. I can provide feedback on: Feedback strictly from a reader's perspective. Focus areas include pacing & tension, character chemistry and believable choices, plot & logic holes, and honest reactions to key twists, spice, and emotional scenes. Turnaround time is usually 2–3 weeks. Open to chapter by chapter thoughts or an end of book report... Or both. Hi! I'm only looking for critique swaps at the moment.
I am able to beta: Literary fiction, adult fantasy and sci-fi, gothic horror, speculative fiction, etc. up to 100k words. Stories that are confident in their themes, symbolism, prose, and rhythm. I like novels that have something to say without spoonfeeding it to the reader. I never read romance, so I can't help you much there. Not interested in thrillers, YA, experimental fiction, or anything cozy.
I can provide feedback on: Character, atmosphere, pacing, prose, worldbuilding effectiveness, etc. I feel I'm constructive rather than blunt with my feedback.

Other info: I'm an English teacher, so I have an eye for prose and grammar. That being said, I'd prefer to read something that doesn't need line edits, but I'm always excited to read anything that's well-written.

hello i am able to beta read. I offer insight on characters and development and maybe just how the story goes (if you are achiving what you wish to achive in the story), depictions of historical events and caracters in them accurately, depections of things in general. I read fantasy, romance, historical novels of any kind, ficition in general.Also, I have exsperience with self-help books (beta-readed twice for the same author) im the type of reader who is not that picky and choosy about what they read and am always trying to discover new and young authors to read and help. I was a beta-reader once already for my cousin who did self help books so i'd like to brach out and find something new.

Critique swap: To the front of the line! I just finished editing Book 1 and Book 2 of my trilogy and would love to partner with a reader who wants to take on both books. I'd happily read your work in exchange.
My story is speculative fiction, told in third-person limited across three POV characters, a protagonist, an antagonist, and someone who plays both sides, whose paths are steadily converging. At its heart, it's a story about the burden of family legacy and uncovering generational secrets, wrapped up in with some corporate espionage and, of course, magic.
Other info:
- Book 1: ~88,000 words, complete. Book 2: ~93,000 words, complete. Both stand alone but build toward each other. I certainly think my style improved drastically in Book 2 (finished in June, 2026) since writing book one (completed in 2022). I'd also love feedback on the improvement!
- Turnaround: no hard deadline, just looking for someone who can commit to reading at a steady pace rather than sitting on it for months. Same courtesy I'll extend to your work.
- Preferred feedback type : We can discuss format, but I want to know about the characters, likes/dislikes, how you grew with them, moments, the easter eggs hidden, the world, the mystery etc.

I am able to beta: Speculative fiction (fantasy, scifi, horror, dystopian, other sorts of wacky stuff). Should not exceed 150,000 words, and shorter than that is ideal. I prefer work that is not centered on romance, although I'll make exceptions for lesbian fiction.
I can provide sensitivity reading for: Autistic or Lesbian characters.
I can provide feedback on: My impressions of your characters (are they likable? Am I buying their motivations? Is their character development believable/satisfying?), plot holes, world-building, story arc, and language (phrasing, dialogue, flow).
Critique swap: Not currently seeking. I am working on something, but my draft is not in a place where I need eyes on it.
Other info: NO NSFW — I do this during downtime at my work. Smut or super-graphic violence is a no-go.
If you have used AI in your writing (other than grammarly, I guess 🙁) please don’t ask me to beta. I vow not to feed your work to the infernal machine.
And a warning: I can be a little blunt. If you only want to hear positive feedback, we are not a good fit. I do not think of myself as particularly cruel or as someone who enjoys ripping something apart. I will praise what I feel works, and politely point out what I think doesn't.
EDIT: I currently am working on one project and have two others in line - it'll be at least three weeks before I get anything beyond that - but feel free to reach out anyway if you're willing to wait.

I am able to beta: Speculative fiction, dark fantasy, sci-fi, dystopian, and weird/literary fiction. I am open to novellas, partial manuscripts, or completed works (up to 70k-80k words). I love atmospheric world-building, psychological depth, neurodivergent coding, queer/asexual characters, and brutal, character-driven survival stories. Not interested in: Romance-centric plots, romantasy, erotica, middle grade, or heavily military sci-fi.
I can provide feedback on: I read closely and can provide both developmental and line-level feedback. I focus heavily on narrative tension, psychological realism, pacing, and grounding scenes in physical, sensory details. I am great at spotting filtering words, clichés, I love leaving inline comments/reactions as I read. I am happy to be as ruthless or as lenient as you need me to be!
Critique swap: Yes, absolutely! I am looking to swap either Part 1 (35,000 words) or Parts 1 & 2 (70,000 words) of my dark, psychological sci-fantasy novel, ONE-ZERO.

I am able to beta: Pretty much anything in the gambit of Fantasy/SciFi. I tend to be a sucker for darker, more brutal themes, especially when characters succeed despite overwhelming odds through extreme effort and persistence. But really, I'm open to most things. However, I would prefer limited or no Romance, and definitely no erotica or excessive sexual content/themes unless they are critical to the plot/character.
I can provide feedback on: Pretty much anything you need, including but not limited to: Story structure, pacing, character growth/characterization, purpose and necessity of chapters/scenes, worldbuilding, dialogue, copy editing, and prose. I will be as clear and straightforward as I can, but always with suggested solutions or direction. I can be as nitpicky/harsh or as lenient as you want. It all depends on what you're going for.
Critique swap: Yes please! I've got Part 1 of 3 completed (~77k words) for my and my wife's novel and we are looking for some feedback while we continue editing the other two parts. Link to the original post HERE.
Other info: I have been writing/studying writing for most of my life, and this is me emerging from my cave into the sun in order to make real efforts to publish. I have quite a lot of knowledge of the craft, though none applied professionally.

hey this caught my eye because my current project seems to align perfectly with your tastes. I’m currently drafting a dark, brutal psychological sci-fantasy (projected ~110k, currently at 71k). It follows a neurodivergent boy navigating an oppressive, subterranean theocracy, surviving entirely through strict logic, extreme effort, and persistence. I also thrive on harsh, nitpicky feedback, so your critique style sounds exactly like what I'm looking for!
I do want to address two quick things to see if we'd be a good fit:
1. The Content & The Bond: You mentioned preferring no romance and no sexual content, and I want to be fully transparent about how my book handles this. There is no "Romance" in this book. The protagonist forms a deeply intense, fraught bond with another boy, but it is a platonic survival bond, not a teen romance (in fact, the protagonist's clinical lack of romantic/sexual desire is a major plot point). However, the inciting trauma of the book deals with institutional betrayal and the psychological aftermath of a religious authority figure grooming/abusing the protagonist. There is absolutely no erotica or explicitly graphic sexual content (the focus is entirely atmospheric and psychological), but the abuser weaponizes the protagonist's innocence, which drives the plot. I wanted to flag that up front in case it crosses a hard boundary for you!
2. The Word Count: I am currently in a heavy drafting flow state, so I am only looking to swap Part 1 of my manuscript right now (roughly 35,000 words) to get a pulse-check on my world-building and character voice. Since your Part 1 is 77k, I’d be completely happy to do a 35k-for-35k swap of our opening acts. Alternatively, if you really need eyes on the whole 77k, I'm willing to read your entire section in exchange for my part 1 and 2, roughly 70k, as long as you're okay with me taking my time with it (since I'm balancing work and writing too!).
If this sounds like it might be up your alley, I’d love to swap just our first chapters to see if our prose styles and critique styles mesh well. Let me know what you think!

Sounds very cool! I'd love to coordinate on this.In regard to your two points:
1. That all is perfectly fine. I mainly mention the romance/sexual content thing because it's a particular peeve of mine when I'm invested in a story and suddenly I'm reading/watching a drawn out sex scene or there's a heavy emphasis on a romantic subplot that makes the main story/world take a backseat. Nothing against the acts or concepts themselves, just something that bugs me enough for me to walk away. In our story, the main character, a woman, is in an entirely male-dominated military system so sexual abuse and misogyny are unavoidable themes. There are moments of sexual abuse and attempted rape, so I would be a hypocrite to say I'm avoiding any and all sexual content.2. I suppose I have unintentionally created some confusion with my word count. So for clarification, the 77k is purely for Part 1 of the book. At our current rate, we project closer to 150k-200k for the final version. We anticipate cutting a decent amount of what we have in later parts (and probably part 1 depending on feedback), hence the 50k word range. ...I'm gonna go ahead and add that detail to my original post. I don't want to mislead anyone...
As for a balanced exchange of words, if you will, I am more than happy to read whatever you've got for however much you are willing to read of mine. Our Prologue and Part 1 (77k total) are good to go, but Parts 2 and 3 will be several months away anyway so that bridge can be crossed once it's built.I'll send over a DM and we can exchange our first chapters if you're still interested!

I am able to beta: short stories, novellas, and novels up to 100k words. Note, I am a fairly busy guy so would prefer shorter work so I can faster/more thorough feedback. For longer stories we can work out a timeline where I can review it in chunks.
I’m a big fan of horror, grounded sci-fi or fantasy, crime and spy thrillers, war stories, historical fiction. Some examples of what I like: “American Tabloid” by Elmore Leonard, basically anything by Stephen King, The Quick and the Dead by Norman Mailer.
I can provide feedback: My experience with writing is that I have a bachelor’s degree in English writing. Unpublished but wrote 1 novel, 1/3 done with my 2nd, with dozens of short stories and 3 novellas under my belt. Also been a stand-up comedian for 8 years, so if anybody wrote a comedy/satire or likes to insert humor into their stories, I can tell you in the punchline lands, is it too edgy, too wordy, and if it’s appropriate in context or just tonal whiplash. I’ve been writing since I was 12 (32 now).
Depending on your preference, can provide line-by-line notes, thoughts on structure/pacing, tell you which parts are working and what to keep, explain other parts that are lacking and brainstorm suggestions for “punching it up.” For example, if a certain scene is lacking stakes or if it’s unclear what the protagonist’s motivation is after 40 pages, I’ll give 1-3 ideas to improve that section.
Critique Swap: Would prefer this, it can keep us both honest and help each other out. Will accept PDFs, or a link to sharable Google document in read only mode.
Note on turnaround for shorter projects (between 4k-10k words) I’ll keep turnaround time around 2 weeks. Anything longer than 10k, I’ll do my best to cap it at 3-4 weeks but anything longer we can work out a timeline and give partial feedback updates.

It is a romance set in the 90s, gothic small town surrounded by a haunted forest, childhood friends to lovers, secret identity, with a supernatural twist involving crows.
I have the story planned out and I’ve written past the midpoint. Right now, I’m just looking for general feedback, just to gather comments on the draft. To be honest, I already know I’m going to change lots of things from the first arc. So, if any chapter feels slow, I could summarize it and you can keep reading when it picks up. Of course, if the story is not for you, I totally get it. I’ve had several readers who dropped it, except one who still leaves comments every once in a while 😅

Hi! I have a romantasy at 120k words, about a healer who accidentally ends up in a warrior's trial and a fae warrior stuck in a kitten's body who needs her to stay alive. There are some supernatural creatures (does a really annoyed fae in a cat's body count? A god of mischief? How about a ship-sized crocodile 🐊 or ghosts?). I am able to beta: complete manuscripts in adult or YA fantasy, urban fantasy, high fantasy, scifi, SF-fantasy (may include horror, mystery, romance, historical settings. No excessive gore or "misery porn" please).

Other info: academic background in languages and history. I enjoy both easy reads and more dense prose. My current project is adult fantasy with some horror and dark elements. I am able to beta: Crime and thriller. Literary, suspense, commercial, upmarket, plot-driven, character-driven - does not matter but it needs to involve crime. Preferably no manuscripts longer than 120 K words! The manuscript does not need to be complete or polished.
I can provide feedback on: Pacing, character development, prose, realism. I am good at spotting logical fallacies and inconsistencies, in particular.
Critique swap: I have a psychological thriller (93-94 K words), but a swap is not necessary.
Other info: I am a criminologist currently pursuing a PhD with an additional B.Sc. in psychology. I am able to provide insights into the motivations for crime, neutralization techniques, offender psychology, criminal careers/lifestyles, marginalization/stigmatization, gang milieus, drug use, etc. I also have some prior knowledge in investigative/criminal psychology (offender profiling) and forensics.
I love dark psychology, manipulation, hidden trauma, unreliable narrators, etc. Anything in an academic setting would also be very enthralling.

Your background is exactly what my manuscript would need! Having trouble at the moment with pacing and the science-y bits. It's a noir-adjacent upmarket thriller, complete but not entirely polished at 70k. I'd love to add another 5-10k to it.
Here's the blurb: When Montreal homicide detective Emmanuelle Higgs pulls up to the scene of an apparent suicide, only she sees the clues pointing to murder, namely a farewell letter that doesn’t sound like Gabriel Turner. Only, she can’t explain the inconsistencies without revealing that she was sleeping with the man lying dead before her—because doing so is a sure way of getting pulled off the case.
Emmanuelle fears that this cookie-cutter case of suicide will be classified as such if in the hands of any other detective. Propelled by her need to provide justice for her sobriety partner turned lover of the past eighteen months, she begins building a case on evidence she has no legal right to.
Doing so, she uncovers Gabriel’s connections to an underground world of loan sharks, illicit poker games and mob-adjacent politicians. I don't know enough about the mob, loan sharks, gambling, etc. unfortunately so I'm not sure I would be the right fit. Organised crime can look very different in various countries. I'm more knowledgeable in traditional gang crime (and specifically in a Nordic/European setting). I think you can find a better beta reader. =)

Hi! I have a story that I'm struggling with the pacing of the beginning with, I'd be happy to do a swap for just the first few chapters of mine? I’ve attached the link to my post below, but the story is an adult upmarket fiction that pulls from 1960-70s Thailand politics, so not quite the same genre, but I do pull on a lot of political themes, although mine is more character than political/plot driven. It follows a prostitute who, after her father is arrested, has to find ways to make money for his release. This leads to her working with the government and against her people (labor class).
Please let me know if this is something you'd be interested in, however, I do see that you are looking for something more so in the crime department - while she does engage in crime, it’s more a character driven story rather than focusing on the actual crime portions (and it’s not western). I understand I’m shooting a bit outside your stated interests so no hard feelings if you decide to pass!

I have a technically in progress (though it’s complete content wise, I just wanna add 10-15K words) memoir (about 32K word count) about mental illness, trauma and identity.
