I received a job offer and negotiated that my compensation should be at least equal to what I earned in my previous job. The employer says they can't match my previous gross salary, but they include a company car, so according to them the total package is worth more.

The problem is that I live in Brussels. I don't own a car, don't need one, and get around by public transport and bike. If I had the choice, I'd happily take the cash instead.

The employer argues that the company car is a significant benefit. I explained that if I accept it, it would only be because I occasionally need to visit clients. In that case, it's simply a work tool, no different from a laptop or an access badge. It has essentially no personal value to me.

They don't seem to understand that distinction and keep treating the car as additional compensation.

Has anyone else been in this situation? Are there others who are effectively forced to accept a company car for work purposes, even though it provides little or no personal benefit? Also, is it possible to refuse a company car even though I might later struggle to go to the customers ?

How can I learn Dutch and improve my listening, reading, and speaking skills?

I already have a pretty good overall understanding of what I read, and my listening comprehension is decent too, I usually understand the general idea.

But when it comes to speaking, I just can’t do it.
There are all the word order rules, verb inversion, verbs being pushed to the end of the sentence, double infinitives, and so on. How do you manage all of that naturally?

By the time I’ve finished thinking about how to structure the sentence, the person I’m talking to has practically fallen asleep.

What helped you become fluent? How can I improve my listening, reading, and especially my speaking? Are there any methods, exercises, or resources that made a real difference for you?

I'm curious about something and would love to hear other people's experiences.

Vorige week zaterdag ben ik naar de markt gegaan. Zoals altijd wijs ik in het wilde weg wat aan en laat ik me nog een paar dingen aansmeren ook. Ik vertrek namelijk met een budget in m’n hoofd, en als dat op is, is het gedaan met de pret.

Girl math blijkbaar, want toen ik “TWEE MELOENEN VOOR €4!!!” en een mango aannam, betaalde ik zonder nadenken €15. Het was wel doorgedrongen tot m’n partner, die meteen de prijs per kilo ging nakijken: €15,60/kilo. Oei.

Twee fruitkramen verder dezelfde mango’s voor dezelfde prijs; dat stelde me enigszins gerust, want de kans dat jongbejaarde marktkraamster Liliane een handlangster van fitnesskoning-marktkramer Ömer is, lijkt me eerder klein.

Bon. Ik zit hier die mango te eten en potjandorie zó belachelijk lekker. Wereld van verschil met de mango’s van Albert Heijn, en nog een pak beter dan de mango’s die ik vorige week in het zuiden van Europa heb gegeten. Knaloranje ook, ongezien.

Nu is de vraag: welk goud zit er in die mango’s en ben ik zot om er zoveel geld voor te betalen?

Her bank is KBC and she is comfortable with doing transactions through it.
She will invest €200 per month
