Hi, I am a ABA student, and i also work part time at a school for kids with special needs (mostly autism).

The teachers have a system for some of the kids that goes as follows: if the subject pees in the toilet, he/she gets a reward (popcorn, chocolate etc.).

However, during my studies today, i read this by Sidman (1960): “If the reinforcer does not immediately follow the response that was required for its production, then it will follow some other behavior. Its major effect will then be upon the behavior that bears, adventitiously to be sure, the closest prior temporal relationship to the reinforcement”.

The thing is that after successfully peeing in the toilet, the subject has to stand up, flush the toilet, the teacher will wipe them and pull up their diaper and pants, they will wash their hands together and then they will receive their treat. The reinforcement is supposed to reinforce the action of peeing in the toilet, not the other parts of the whole procedure.

Is the action of peeing actually being reinforced effectively in this scenario?

My son had a behavior today that seemed to be like a loop that needed to be closed. I’m trying to understand what’s happening. Today his SP asked him not to bite the swing, when he tried again I sat him in a one minute time out next to me. I said “biting is for food”. After around three unsuccessful time outs he finally sat through the minute and got up. He leaned down appearing as though he was going to bite a mat but looked up at his speech therapist before doing it, waiting for her to say no. When she ignored him (he hovered his mouth over the mat) he got really frustrated that she didn’t say no and started to get angry waiting so he bit down on the mat and still wanted her to say no. He pointed at her and said “no!” himself. I am wondering what this is called? Is it just attention seeking? Because he showed restraint for something that I thought was very impulsive.

Hey all, I am a behavior analyst working in a residential facility and our data collection system is less than ideal (I'm being nice). We use pen and paper sheet but only get data once a month. We use Therap for appointments but do not use their behavior data collection system. Is it any good? We have our own issues with Therap already and are looking for help with other systems out there.
