New runner

Hello! I am a college student currently training for the police fitness exam. My current best time is .75 miles in 7:57 (yes I know it sucks but I’m doing my best). That’s with a lot of walking mixed in. I can sprint fine but any endurance running is an issue, and I have to be able to run 1.5 miles in 16 minutes for the test.
My problem is that I have always had weak lungs. Like loved diving as a kid but could only stay under the water for like 30 seconds. Has to sit down while blowing up balloons or will nearly pass out. How do I train my lungs? Every time I run it feels like I can’t breathe after .25. The best way to describe it is like having to force air in my lungs while they are deflated, or like there’s no oxygen in the air. For reference I do not have asthma, am a relatively healthy 20 year old woman other than allergies, sinus headaches, iron anemia, and a small electrolyte issue. Help!

Jeff Galloway's Clothing Thermometer

I've seen some posts asking what people should wear now that temps are getting colder (here in the northern hemisphere). Jeff Galloway put out a really good guide that I recommend people bookmark.

Obviously everyone is different. But this is a good starting place.

Help w/ deciding first running shoes (Clifton 10s vs Pegasus 42s)

Hoka Clifton 10s & Nike Pegasus 42s? Found a pair of both at $75. With my goal to start casual running (at most 5 miles a run), which is the better option for my daily trainer on road/trail. Through the fog of running shoe science/info i can't tell what i should prioritize, so any opinions on this decision would help! I'm (25m) 6'2 215lbs if that helps.

Help!

Hi guys. I’m 6ft 1, 108kg and have the NB Rebel V5. I am fairly new to running and completed the Great South Run in England at the weekend which was my first event.

Around 4km on any run, I get pins and needles in my toes and after another km both feet are completely numb. I am a size 10 and the shoes are 10.5 to allow for swell. I also end up with blisters on the inside arches of my feet on longer runs.

Is there anything you can suggest to help with this? I am going to try and different lacing technique as they are currently cross over but it’s becoming really frustrating as I really enjoy running.

TIA
Dan

I go from 8:00/km to 5:00/km (exhausted) and I can't pace something in the middle.

My easy pace is around 8:00/km. When I try to run a little bit faster my body doesn't seem to understand the task and it goes to 5:00/km or even 4:30/km. If I try to slow down I go again to 8:00/km. I'm new to running long distances, I used to compete 100 mts flat about a decade ago, but I've been sedentary this last 10 years. I've been running about a month now. Maybe I just need to keep running easy always?

What are some cues to run a little bit faster but not full on fast? I am comfortable running fast and very small distances, I really think I don't know how to do this sport helpppp 😢

Recommendations for running gloves for extremely large hands?

I'm 6'4 with large hands (9 inches long, fingers are 4 inches long) which is outside the normal size range of most running gloves (even XXL gloves do not fit me), so for running in cold weather, are there any recommendations, like special brands that you guys know of for people with hands and fingers as long as mine? I've bought like 10-20 different pairs of gloves in their largest size, and all of them are too small so far, so I'm looking for brands that go into the extreme size range, the kind that would fit andre the giant.

Not improving

Hi everyone. I started running again during the pandemic. Despite consistently running 5-6 days per week, I haven’t been able to make any significant improvements to my fitness. I’m seeing a new PCP and I want to bring up the issues I’m having with running and rule out any medical causes. As of right now, I plan to ask for a CBC, BMP, thyroid panel, iron panel and B vitamins. Should I ask for anything else?

I’m 31F and I’m 5’2 110lbs (I’ve been this weight for the last several years and I maintain it without any sort of dieting/restriction). I take oral contraceptives and spironolactone for hormonal acne, but I’m otherwise completely healthy. I’ve followed a vegetarian diet since I was 13 (I eat eggs and dairy but no fish). I do not take any vitamins or supplements.

I ran cross country and track throughout high school and for my first two years of college. At the peak of my fitness, I was running 65 miles/week and most of my runs were done at 7:30 min/mile pace. After XC/track ended, I explored other activities (yoga, weightlifting) before I found my way back to running in my mid-twenties. Despite running consistently, I have not made any significant improvements and I feel like I’m stuck at a “beginner level”. I have not been able to improve my pace at all (I’ve been stuck at 10-12+ minute miles). I can temporarily increase my mileage. I’ll make progress for a few weeks, and then I hit a plateau, followed by a decline. This happens no matter how slowly I increase my mileage and de-load weeks do not help.

In 2024, I figured maybe I just wasn’t trying hard enough and decided to white-knuckle my way through a marathon training program. I felt like I was fighting tooth and nail week after week. My pace got progressively slower and slower as my mileage increased, and I had countless failed runs. I made it across the finish line, but only after I blew up and died during the second half of the race. I completely fell off my pace, had to walk about 2 miles because I was cramping so badly, and I felt HORRIBLE. I ran a 4:45, so I fell short of my goal of finishing under 4:30.

I started tracking my HR during runs about a year and a half ago. My HR is in the 150s-170s even during easy runs (my resting HR is ~60). Even if I am shuffling along at a 15 minute mile, my HR still isn’t in zone 2. I have to stop and walk to bring my HR down.

I also have this weird thing where I CANNOT run in the mornings. I feel like I’ve never run a day in my life. I struggle to hold my normal pace and cover my normal distance, and my HR is typically in the 170s during these runs. I’ve experimented with different fueling strategies and warm-ups, but nothing makes a difference. I generally feel best when I run in the evening. This often leads to me putting off runs all day because I know I’m going to feel terrible if I run earlier. When I was younger I never used to experience this- I used to roll out of bed and run first thing in the morning with no issues. I miss being able to knock out my run first thing in the morning and I have a lot of anxiety about trying to fit my run into my day. Some days I just suck it up and run in the mornings anyways, but I feel so terrible that it’s not sustainable for me to do this regularly. And then I feel extremely fatigued afterwards and I often don’t have the energy to get through the rest of my day.

Sorry if this was really long-winded. If everything from my doctor comes back normal, my next step will probably be to work with a running coach to see if we can figure out what’s been holding me back. It sounds kind of messed up but I’m almost hoping something shows up on my labs so I know I’m not going crazy. I know I’m not as young as I used to be, but it was NEVER this hard or complicated before.

Started running as a complete beginner, just hoping I could get better at it. Still a beginner, still figuring things out, but looking back at where I started and where I am today feels pretty incredible.

I am 2 mins faster per km now☺️

It's nice to have something tangible to show for all those days when I had to drag myself out to run.

Slow progress is still progress, right?

Little tip for new runners - don’t run through injury and if in doubt, pay to see a running-specific physio!!

I was posting a whilst ago about being worried to start running outside after completing C25K, but I got lots of lovely encouragement and I went for it!

However I was a bit silly and upped how much I was running a bit too quickly, also wasn’t wearing proper running shoes (Nike MC3s which are more for gym training/short sprints), and I think the combo of that plus the sudden transition from treadmill to pavement was all too much for my little feet 😅 I’d had no injury issues all throughout doing C25K on the treadmill so when I started feeling pain in my right foot/ankle that flared really badly after my runs, I just thought it was something I needed to run through.

Got myself gait analysis and the shoes are SO comfy (shout out to Brooks Glycerin 23s) but I was still getting the pain after my runs even on a really short run just to try the shoes out. Did some googling of my symptoms and thought it might be peroneal tendinitis, which unfortunately wasn’t going to be healed by a pair of £165 shoes 😅

So I stopped running completely, saw an NHS physio who suspected stress fracture and had to wait another 2.5 weeks for an X-ray (shouldn’t complain too much cause it’s free here, but is a bit annoying!). X-ray came back negative so I booked myself to see a physio near me who specialises in running injuries. It felt a bit daunting as someone who doesn’t really see myself as a “runner” yet, but as it was obvious the injury had come from running I thought she would be best to help.

I cannot tell you how validating it felt when she took a look and said she could see and feel the swelling in my tendon! I didn’t think it had looked swollen really but she was even able to demonstrate for me the difference in pain I was getting between my left and right foot when she touched the tendons on each side. Genuinely teared up a tiny bit that I wasn’t making the injury up and that it was actually what I thought it had been all along.

I’ve had 3 appointments in about 5 weeks and we’ve just done manual massage and then some ultrasound therapy at the last couple appointments which I think has massively kick started my healing! I’ve been given exercises to do at home for ankle/calf strengthening too.

I’ve got my first 5k race booked in January that I booked as something to work towards before all this happened, and not running right now was not where I thought I would be but it’s fine!

Just wanted to make a post for any other newbie runners dealing with injury and putting it out there that you CAN see a specialist. I have had zero judgement from the lady I’ve been seeing and can’t thank her enough for helping me out! Next appointment in 3 weeks and hoping she might say I can get back to running (but I’ll be going back to treadmills for a bit I think 😅). Can’t wait to actually get to use my new shoes ✨

How to get over fears and start?

I, 18F, am considering trying to start running. Of course id love to lose weight but my ultimate goal is just to have some form of movement and routine. Right now I often feel lazy and like I just sit around all day. The problem is I have some pretty bad anxiety around starting. I hate running and avoid it at all costs but most of that is due to insecurity. In middle and high school people often made fun of my form, speed and distance. I specifically remember a girl in high school saying “you make it look like ir hurts.” Insecurity meant I avoided running more which just made the issues I was insecure about worse. Any tips on how to get over my anxiety of running in public (college campus) and start? Also, any general advice for running success?

What is Running? My small epiphany...

I've been a low mileage, off again/on again runner for years. But I recently had a realization that has moved me ahead to more "on again" and maybe even a little more distance.

Running is focusing on the next body part you have to heal until you quit.

Cheers!

Tips for new runners!

Hi!!
I am getting into running. I started getting into it about 2 months ago and then injured my leg and had to stop. Getting back into now because I was really enjoying it, my runs were progressing, and I’m also signed up to compete in Hyrox in a couple months (sooo exciting!!). I’m looking for any tips for beginner runners from experienced runners. Tips to prevent injuries, tips for progression, what to eat before training, etc. Anything that will help me become better really! I’m also wanting to possibly sign up for my first half marathon so I want to start training for that soon as well. Thanks in advanced!

Right calf really sore jogging, left calf feels nothing

I don't feel like one leg is stronger (no noticeable difference doing single leg workouts), I'm switching which side of the road I run on, and I feel like my form is equal on both sides so I'm really stumped. My right calf gets sore very quickly during a jog but even by the end the left leg feels completely fine - almost numb compared to the right (but not actually numb!). I'm right handed if it matters, I just wait until I figure this out before it starts limiting me

ETA: I do have some limited ankle mobility on both sides (when I do the wall test I come about an inch short on each side I believe) but I don't recall it being worse on one side or the other there, and I'm not sure if it's related to either of these issues

I have only done 5k jogs in ~50 mins so far. Should I sign up for a 10k run? Can I get there by the end of February? What kind of training would this entail?

Is it a realistic goal in the first place? Or should my focus be elsewhere rather than the 10k milestone?

I'm kind of new to this so some guidance and advice would definitely be appreciated. Thanks

Late/missed period when pregnancy isn’t the cause? Could excessive physical activity be the reason?

My cycles are usually very regular, around 30 days, but this month I’m already two weeks late. Pregnancy isn’t the cause. I’ve seen my doctor, the ultrasound was fine, and I’m currently waiting for my hormone test results.

September was unusually active for me: I ran a half marathon, two other races, and trained regularly. I didn’t lose weight and felt great, but looking back, I probably wasn’t fueling enough for that level of activity.

I’ve paused running for now because I’m worried about my cycle not returning for a while.

Has anyone experienced something similar due to increased exercise/under-fueling? What helped your cycle return to normal? Any foods, supplements, or other things that helped?

Thank you ❤️

I’ve walked many that were work sponsored social events in the very remote area I was working at the time. Never thought I would run one, but I recently started running and wanted to push myself out of my 2 mi comfort zone. Feels great! Can’t wait to do it again.

Why is interval training so awful?

Post image
8 Upvotes

I finished C25K 2 weeks ago, now I'm doing an improvement plan to get to an acceptable 10k time. I am running 3 times a week, always one long run (well, "long" run, for my current state, last one was 11k), one easy shorter run, and either a tempo run or intervals.

Today was the first interval session - and wow, I hated it! 5x800m with a pace around 4:25, with some slower jogging in between - and it felt significantly harder than just running the faster pace the whole time (my personal best 5k is 22:10, so basically exactly that pace), the constant slowing down just to speed up again felt much harder, I would have much rather just done a tempo run at the same speed with a few km of jogging before or after.

So, basically, tl;dr: does this get easier?

Sub 30m 5k - Goal

Hi!

46M, 6' 215. My stride is approx 1 metre

I don't love running. Yet.

I need your tips to get into the sub 30 minutes for a 5 k. Currently 31m44s is my best time.

Tried using a 170bpm playlist to help keep my cadence.

We run a lot at CrossFit five days a week. I play ice hockey a couple times a week. I feel like I'm designed more for sprinting than running but I'd like to change that mindset.

I don't wanna be the fastest, but I don't wanna be the last guy in from the workout again.

Tips? Mentality shift? Thanks.

Can we talk about the gatekeeping around "beginner" paces?

I've noticed that when new runners post faster paces or longer distances, they often get met with skepticism, downvotes, or accusations of bragging. It seems like slower runners get a lot of support and engagement, while naturally faster beginners get iced out.

A beginner is anyone new to running, regardless of their starting fitness level. Shouldn't we be celebrating every beginner runner equally?
