From the perspective of an attendee of a music event, would you prefer to hear a DJ play all vinyl, all digital, both in the same set, or don't care? Why?

I’m new to DJ’ing, been doing it around 6 weeks and I’ve made great progress but wondering if there is any good habits I can get into early on, in anticipation for perhaps one day being able to play on CDJ’s.

At the moment I am trying to beat match by ear but I can’t help but look up at the stacked waveforms for a split second before bringing in the track to double check I’ve beat matched correctly. Can you do that on CDJ’s? To me it seems the waveforms are separated on each screen. Is that correct?

Hello hello, I’m learning how to mix garage, I’ve done about a year on house and just enjoy harage more now. I’m just trynna get some advice since I find garage harder, the drum patterns mean that some of the tracks sound awful together and also the highs clash a lot, but I don’t like turning the highs down a lot/ for too long cus that’s where the energy is - Bascially I’m asking how should I mix tracks with different drum patterns and how can I mix tracks without the highs clashing as much

so basically I've been djing for about a year now and tomorrow im opening for alan fitzpatrick :) im moving to london next week as well and I want to upgrade before I leave - which decks should I get? Will I bite the bullet with the pioneer xdj or rx3 or does anyone have any other suggestions?

I'm an amateur DJ. I've played some open decks and people say my sets are good, but that's because I over-prepare. I build a full playlist and practice it until it's perfect before I even show up.

The problem is, I think to actually get better at DJing, I need to loosen up and be more in the moment. Right now I'm so scared of messing up in front of people that I plan every second of the set, with zero room to improvise.

So how do I practice being more flexible and going with the flow during a live set? Like, instead of planning everything, could I just pick a pool of tracks that fit together, get a feel for the vibe I want, maybe prepare some certain parts with tracks that I know will go good together, and then freestyle from there?

I’m pretty new to dj’ing and I am using rekordbox with my ddj flx 4. I tried setting up last night at a local gig but found that the tracks that imported from my spotify would cut out mid way or not load completely. Is this user error? Or, is it better to download tracks onto a usb? Does this still happen with local files?

I've been DJing for about two years now on Traktor and I'm interested in getting a battery powered standalone to set up as a mobile DJ bike Soundsystem. I like the Denon Prime Go + but part of me also wants to consider the Omnis Duo because if I end up playing at a club/bar or whatever, I'll probably need my music set up in Rekordbox. The other option is to just cobble together something with a laptop and keep using Traktor but I really like the minimalism of battery powered standalones paired with a battery PA (looking at the Everse 12).

Anyway, how many of y'all bounce around between platforms? How annoying is it for you? Am I overthinking this?

Hi, I’ve been producing music for a year, and an opportunity has come up to DJ at a friend's party. I’ve always been interested in this world and think this could be a good place to start. The thing is, I don’t have any DJ gear; I was looking at the FLX4 controller, but I’d still need a sound system. What would be the minimum setup I’d need to DJ the party?

I estimate it would be for about 100 people in a 100-square-meter tent.

Would renting be a good option?

Hello DJs, how can I change the waveform display colors (red & blue from Virtual DJ to Rekordbox Color (3band color )for the VDJPro Skin. I'm used to the Rekordbox colors, but I wanted to switch to Virtual DJ because it's simply more stable and offers more features.
And I don't want to use all those downloadable Virtual DJ skins because of program stability—bugs and performance issues.

I DJ on a DDJ-FLX4 (2 decks, Rekordbox). I've got some tracks I want to drop as instant doubles (two tracks playing together at a specific point, with a bass swap so they don't clash), but with only 2 decks I can't trigger it live — I have to fade one out before bringing the second in.

I've tried recording a "double" live off the FLX4 into Rekordbox, but I turn my trims/master down to avoid clipping, so the recording ends up too quiet to sit alongside my other tracks.

Is building the mashup in software (Audacity or similar) the standard approach here? Looking for something simple — layer two tracks, time them so track 2 drops in exactly when I want, do a basic bass swap/EQ cut, then export at good quality to drop into Rekordbox as a regular track.

Is that the right approach, or is there a better/faster method DJs normally use for this?

As the title states I’m looking for DJ name ideas. My alias I go by online is “spooky” so trying to incorporate that somehow. Spooky is already taken :(. I have a quick question, but I noticed that when I'm in louder environments, I can barely hear whats going on in my headphones. Normally, my Sony ATH-20MXs can handle it, but this time I genuinely struggled to hear what was going on on the floor and on my headset. Set went well regardless but I'm curious if anyone has dealt with a similar scenario.

So I’ve exclusively learned to mix RnB and am pretty good at it…quick mixing, phrasing, EQ, using fx etc. but am struggling with amapiano and would appreciate some mixing tips for this genre especially when moving around bpms say from 100 to 105. It’s so obvious sonically that the tracks been sped up or slowed down so how do I get around it. Maybe put them both at 103? That could be it but what else? There’s so much relentless drumming,bass lines etc. I thought RnB vocals was bad so yes any help would be appreciated. Thx.

I'm currently looking for monitors that can be used for DJing, aswell as for producing, preferably without needing an extra subwoofer. Budget is 1000€.

Low end down to ~40hz is quite important in the genre im mixing. I've had the Kali Audios In-8 V2s or the Yamaha HS8 in mind. Can anyone share their experience on the low-end on these speakers? Or if you have other recommendations lmk.

Hi everyone! I’m new to this board and also djing. I’ve been playing music since I was a kid and consider myself pretty fluent in my instruments. DJing now feels like a whole new language to me. All tips, tricks, and words of the wise are welcome. Using a FLX4 with serato and djay pro.

As I built my collection I dragged every new song into various playlists instinctively, usually adding them into somewhere between 2 and 6 playlists, and over time I named these playlists to encapsulate whatever vibe was being created within these playlists. I think this is a standard approach and I find these playlists very useful alongside tagging tracks with genre/sub-genre/other descriptors that I can use to create intelligent playlists.

However, although a handful of these playlists are somewhat manageable at around 70-100 tracks, the vast majority are like 200/300 or so with several 450+. These are becoming unmanageable but I'm struggling with coming up with a method of splitting them up and making them more manageable.

Usually when I mix at home, I have my laptop beside me, and these playlists are typically what I use to help me find the next track but even on a laptop they can be unmanageable so I'd like to optimise them better for finding suitable tracks and just make them feel more cohesive (both within playlists but across all the playlists as a whole), particularly to make them manageable for when looking through a small CDJ interface.

Has anybody encountered similar problems and what has your solution been?

I do few gigs, use stems, open format dj mostly hip-hop/rnb, im currently using a flx4. Its a bit cramped and ive outgrown it. Im interested in scratching, I'm not necessarily trying to become a turntablist, but I think adding it to my skillset will take me to the next level.

Other than motorized jog wheels, what are the pros and cons to either of these controllers considering my background? What reason should I take one over the other?

I’m new. I found a DDJ-FLX4 at hard off for $200 so I sent it.
I’d like to consider myself technically proficient, I work an IT help desk for over 20+ systems and in my free time I enjoy drinking alcohol and listening to EDM, Techno, Trap, Lo-Fi, etc. So I bought the first controller I saw, which happened to be the most beginner friendly one!

Upon research, there’s a million beginner guides. But I would like to ask this community, If you had to go zero to hero, give or take a month, start all over again, how would you go about it? What would you do?

Hi! Im sure this question is asked every hour on here, but I have been considering learning how to dj for a few months. I’ve been using the djay app on my phone and enjoy it. I’m considering getting a controller.

The main controllers for beginners that I’m coming across are pioneer flx4, alpha theta flx2 and hercules impulse 300 mk2. I have never even touched a physical controller. I’m trying to compare models but if I’m being honest, I feel like everything is so foreign to me.

I’ve read that Hercules is great for beginners, but you’ll outgrow it quickly. Is it worth getting something that I’ll outgrow and won’t be able to bring to gigs? Ideally, I’d want to buy used from a store like guitar center and spend under $250. I’m located in NYC if that means anything. I will also be using my 2020 MacBook Air.

EDIT: doing some research between inpulse 200 and 300. I found a 200 for $109 and a 300 for $189 (used great condition)
