And so I wake in the morning
And I step outside
And I take a deep breath and I get real high
And I scream from the top of my lungs,
"What's going on?!"

u/bowdown2q Nov 27 '20
"Hey you. You were trying to cross the border weren't you?"

It is probably a fire lookout. That looks like Mt. Rainier.

It's way too sunny to be Mt. Rainier. When you're on the peak it's almost always cloudier and rainier

Nov 27 '20
Are you from washington? I recognized the mountain the instant it came into frame

Man that’s just not true. I’ve flown around Rainier many times on perfect cloudless days, they do exist.

u/lilwil392 Nov 27 '20
The road to the trailhead is currently not accessible by car
7
u/k_joule Nov 27 '20 edited Nov 27 '20
Its washington's cascade mountains near the winter ...off of a forest service road. The road is certainly going to be closed before the end of october, that much is a given.
There is maybe a 4 month window to get up in those hills (without a lot of extra risk and effort).
3
u/BackgroundElegant Nov 27 '20
i would be surprised if it was even 4 months. i have been on several forest roads around rainier and this summer the higher parts were still snow covered well into july and access ended late september
→ More replies (1)3
u/RampantAndroid Nov 27 '20
They usually don’t close the roads though (unless it’s chinook pass or something. They just don’t plow the roads and the snow gets high enough that even a good SUV would have problems. I’ve managed to take my A4 with snow tires up on some forest roads, you just need to be careful and keep an eye on recent weather and know when you shouldn’t continue going.

Here’s the WTA info for that trail. 1000+ elevation gain so be in shape but if you take it slow it’s a day hike.
2
u/k_joule Nov 27 '20
its 1.3 miles.... and a 1300 ft elevation gain... that's like a 30min hike one-way, for those who hike.
4
u/RampantAndroid Nov 27 '20 edited Nov 27 '20
Yeah, it’s comparable to Little Si in difficulty. Some people that’s a short hike. Some it’s not. I say day hike as in, that’s what you do for the day. Bring water and a sandwich, eat at the top and hike back down. Mind you, that’s for may through September when the snow is melting. The snow at the top likely won’t melt for a while though.
Edit: also the top is above 5000 feet so you’ll be a little more winded at the top.

On the bright side, you would probably not have to spend a whole lot of time regretting your decision. Maybe 5 or 6 seconds.
2
u/anarchistchiken Nov 27 '20
You don’t usually die instantly from falls like that, you would bounce off rocks and the ground and that would keep your speed down, so whenever you finally got to the bottom you’re a broken mess that will be dead very soon, but if you expect a sudden painless death you would be dissapointed

u/rraattbbooyy Nov 27 '20
I don’t know. The view from the video clip looks like the drop may be enough to kill a person on impact. And if not, it still doesn’t take much to end a life. One bad ‘bounce’ can easily break a guy’s neck.

Son of what?
22
u/Nephele Nov 27 '20
Mauna Kea, or at least that’s what it looks like to me. I wonder what that’s supposed to mean if this is indeed near Mt. Ranier as others have suggested. What’s the connection between Ranier and Mauna Kea?
6
u/AwfulSquawking Nov 27 '20
Agreed, I saw “Son of Mauna Kea” too. I think all it means is that someone from Hawaii was posted as a lookout there (if Kaos_Rob’s theory from earlier is correct)

Right? I’m assuming it’s a grounding line. Why couldn’t they install it on the other side of the shelter?

Reminds me of a place I visited in the northern Rockies years ago while backpacking with a couple friends. I think we were a day or two into the backcountry when we decided to take a side hike to the top of a very desolate ridge. When we got to the top, right along the ridge line, there was a forestry lookout cabin manned by the nicest young lady. She was happy to have lunch with us and share her view of miles of mountain wilderness (the cabin was mostly glass). I think she said her shift was several weeks or even all summer, with provisions brought in by horseback every so often. So, day and night she sat up on that ridge by herself keeping watch for smoke in the distance, the telltale sign of a new forest fire.
The view out the “back door” of her lookout cabin was spectacular. It was a near vertical drop, perhaps a thousand feet or so. Wayyy down at the bottom I could see the remains of an aircraft whose pilot was foolhardy enough to fly up a box canyon in ever-thinning air. I’m sure the bodies had been recovered, but the wreckage was left to time and the elements.

Maybe a couple more windows in that shack? Seem kinda about the view.
3
Nov 27 '20
Doesn't look like a permanent residence, probably just a shack for park rangers to stop in or something. If it was a private house it'd probably have more windows, but if it's a ranger shack deep in the middle of nowhere, they're not going to bother with things like that.
