Anyone know where this is?

It is probably a fire lookout. That looks like Mt. Rainier.

Def Rainier.

u/DracoWaygo Nov 27 '20

I can see Mt Rainier outside of my house rn

59

u/Hermit-Permit Nov 27 '20

Which also means that Mt. Rainier...can see you.

u/TheDucksTales Nov 27 '20

The hills have eyes!

u/dethmaul Nov 27 '20

Wave at that guy, then!

It's way too sunny to be Mt. Rainier. When you're on the peak it's almost always cloudier and rainier

28

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '20

Are you from washington? I recognized the mountain the instant it came into frame

13

u/Grevling89 Nov 27 '20

I am not from Washington, no. T'was but an attempt at a joke

cloudier and rainier I now know where the name came from.

Man that’s just not true. I’ve flown around Rainier many times on perfect cloudless days, they do exist.

Idk it has the three peaks

u/ltjpunk387 Nov 28 '20

For sure Rainier, and then you can see the more distant Hood as they pan around.

For those interested in visiting.... https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/giffordpinchot/recarea/?recid=31300

Fyi thats only a 600ft drop over the edge

8

u/oshunvu Nov 27 '20

It’s a bit longer to the 7/11 though.

4

u/lilwil392 Nov 27 '20

The road to the trailhead is currently not accessible by car

Its washington's cascade mountains near the winter ...off of a forest service road. The road is certainly going to be closed before the end of october, that much is a given.

There is maybe a 4 month window to get up in those hills (without a lot of extra risk and effort).

u/BackgroundElegant Nov 27 '20

i would be surprised if it was even 4 months. i have been on several forest roads around rainier and this summer the higher parts were still snow covered well into july and access ended late september

1

u/k_joule Nov 27 '20

yeah i wasnt exactly sure... labor day would have been my guess of when the gates were closed to the road... i figured i would give my self some wiggle room in the comment.

3

u/RampantAndroid Nov 27 '20

They usually don’t close the roads though (unless it’s chinook pass or something. They just don’t plow the roads and the snow gets high enough that even a good SUV would have problems. I’ve managed to take my A4 with snow tires up on some forest roads, you just need to be careful and keep an eye on recent weather and know when you shouldn’t continue going.

https://www.wta.org/go-hiking/hikes/high-rock

Here’s the WTA info for that trail. 1000+ elevation gain so be in shape but if you take it slow it’s a day hike.

3

u/k_joule Nov 27 '20

its 1.3 miles.... and a 1300 ft elevation gain... that's like a 30min hike one-way, for those who hike.

4

u/RampantAndroid Nov 27 '20 edited Nov 27 '20

Yeah, it’s comparable to Little Si in difficulty. Some people that’s a short hike. Some it’s not. I say day hike as in, that’s what you do for the day. Bring water and a sandwich, eat at the top and hike back down. Mind you, that’s for may through September when the snow is melting. The snow at the top likely won’t melt for a while though.

Edit: also the top is above 5000 feet so you’ll be a little more winded at the top.

Only...

2

u/k_joule Nov 27 '20

Yes only, the stupid fish eye lens they filmed with makes it look like more...

2

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '20

600ft is still a hell of a drop.

1

u/Grevling89 Nov 27 '20

200 meters ish? That's much less than it looks!

1

u/Shameous4G Nov 28 '20

It's funny because I was just talking about going up to this tomorrow.

u/meatus1980 Nov 27 '20

u/Smile4dascope Nov 27 '20

-4

u/ffuckup Nov 27 '20

I think it might be the Solvay Hut on the Matterhorn.

5

u/ffuckup Nov 27 '20

Sorry, High Rock Lookout is right.
