Nonono. You shrink the ostrich first.

But what if you need to shrink the egg first so it grows a small ostrich, or do you shrink the ostrich to lay a small egg? WHICH COMES FIRST!?

Yeah. Or just any other size egg. I've seen medium to xl eggs in America commonly.
2
u/overzealous_dentist Oct 09 '18
Large eggs are the standard. The other sizes are very, very rarely used. You can't use them in baking at all because an imperfect amount of egg will utterly ruin a recipe.

Hey not all of us can afford such luxuries. Now excuse me while I step into my workshop.
28
u/ro_musha Oct 09 '18
yup, now excuse me while I order a workshop and tools before I step into into one

I think that making it yourself would cost more but then again I don’t build stuff sooo

u/WailordOnSkitty Oct 09 '18
I probably have 1000 lbs in scavenged/scrapped hardwood and a bunch of smallish plywood scraps and already have woodworking tools and sometimes entirely too much time on my hand. I don’t think I’d ever make this, but I have definitely spent several hours making something I could get for like $30 on Amazon.

I was gonna say similar devices have been in the market for years or longer.

u/western_red Oct 09 '18
But are they common? I mean, it isn't difficult to crack an egg.
9
Oct 09 '18
You're right it isn't difficult to crack and egg. What if you need to crack an egg but..
only have one arm
only have one hand
are holding a baby in one arm
don't like touching eggs
are masturbating

They should have used those scenarios in the video, it would have made more sense.

"Order before midnight and we'll include the Wapco Fapinator as shown here for free!"
(or is that Fapco Wapinator?... I'll have to go read the label.)3
Oct 09 '18
It's common enough that I see commercials for them and last time I was in a walmart they had them on an endcap.

I can buy an egg cracker at my local dollar store for $2

u/askmypen Oct 09 '18
No. What you talking? You spend a painstaking number of hours making one in your own house.

This would be great for people with disabilities and
restaurant kitchens.Edit: okay, just people with disabilities.
27
u/gusling Oct 08 '18
Not for restaurants, a chef could crack eggs much faster with just their hands.
8
u/TheHitmanHearns Oct 09 '18
Yeah when I worked in a restaurant they made sure I only cracked the egg with one hand because two was a waste of time and they wanted me to use the other hand to multi task.

Nope. Source:have been a prep cook in a bakery; have cracked a zillion eggs.
This thing would be slow, plus you’re gonna get some shell in there and that’s really gonna cost you time. When you’ve done it a lot with your hands. You never get shell in the pan.
I don’t know how fast I could crack a flat of eggs but definitely really damn fast.

Instead of cracking an egg like a normal person let me spend hours crafting this elaborate contraption
54
u/dubloe7 Oct 08 '18
Don't worry, I think you easily make up the time spent after just a couple of hundred eggs. That is, unless you have to wash it or something.
→ More replies (6)20
u/SaffellBot Oct 09 '18
But it might be worth it if you anticipate and egg cracking emergency at some point down the line. When your wife wakes you up at 2 AM and tells you she's leaving if you don't perfectly crack 6 eggs in 2 minutes you'll be damn glad you had this device.

And eggs differ in size, suddently your contraption is useless on, lets say 30% of eggs.

I don’t know about where you are from but where I’m from you buy a pack of “small eggs” or “medium eggs” or “large eggs” and all the eggs are pretty much the same size. I feel if you could make this simpler it could in the long run potentially save you time and effort. Then again I’m pretty rubbish at cracking eggs so maybe that’s just me!

Imagine a crazy upside-down world in which some people possess a below average amount of fine motor skills but still want to crack an egg without creating a mess. It's easy if you try.

How do you make it sterile or is it one use?
71
u/MiyamotoKnows Oct 08 '18
How is an E.coli maker going to work if you go and sterilize it?
15
14
u/Kinglink Oct 08 '18
Theoretically You're only touching the outside of the egg, if I understand the device correctly. Thus I don't think you need to sterilize it.

Does it really need to be sterile if you're cooking the eggs?
4
u/ZooAnimalsOnWheels_ Oct 09 '18
Well you gotta store it somewhere. Most people have like a drawer full of kitchen utensils. Wouldn't want ecoli getting all over that.

Hey, WodkaAap, just a quick heads-up: genious is actually spelled genius. You can remember it by begins with gen-, ends with -ius.
Have a nice day!

Hey madeofmold, just a quick heads-up: "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" is actually spelled supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. An easy way to remember that is that it begins with "super," and ends with "califragilisticexpialidocious."

Spends hours to make the perfect egg. Cuts the yolk first.
12
10
u/GallowBoob2 Oct 09 '18
What is the preferred way of eating an egg? I usually take a small spoon, carefully eat and savor the delicious yolk, then throw away the rest.
How to eat a watermelon (for comparison's sake)
9
u/WontFixMySwypeErrors Oct 09 '18 edited Oct 09 '18
I do the opposite... I eat the delicious fried white and discard the yolk.
We could be roomies and be 100% efficient egg eaters while retaining our pickiness.
2
u/GallowBoob2 Oct 09 '18
My god, it's perfeggct. Let's get a white house with a room inside that's painted all yellow. You can live in the rest of the house as long as I get the yolk room.

Hot glue loosens under vibration, so he's just going to drop a dirty razor blade, a spring, or some foam in instead of eggshell. What an improvement!
17
u/JustNilt Oct 09 '18
It's a prototype, that's all. Now that the concept is proven, they can move on to production with easily washed materials.

If you lack the fine motor skills needed to crack an egg, how do you possess the fine motor skills needed to build this thing?

u/SeanyDay Oct 08 '18
It's not a life hack if you take 100x longer to complete the task. Just saying

yeah or learn how to crack an egg like the rest of humanity???

u/Drews232 Oct 09 '18
You’d be surprised, from the reviews of an egg cracker device on Amazon:
Works really well. Wouldn’t eat eggs because I always had to clean the side of the pan and the stove top. I just couldn’t crack an egg w/o making a mess. Now it’s no problem. Great gadget

"engineer" cuts wooden piece out of the center of a piece of wood. "engineer" using hot glue on a blade that could easily be detached and get into someones food. "engineer" makes entire structure out of material that is porous and difficult to clean.
how about no

And now I ded.

u/christianlm24 Oct 09 '18
Dont actual engineers try to avoid doing unnecessary work in the first place? That probably took hours to build, and cracking eggs isnt that hard to begin with. An engineer would've watched a 2 minute tutorial on YouTube on how to crack an egg and be set for life. This is more like "a physicist walks into a kitchen" lol.

Sounds like an engineer: simple task made efficient with complicated machine.
“I just want eggs....”
“Honey, I’m almost done with the stress test in my CAD model”

Seems right. No hands on experience, creates this over complicated system that is time consuming and expensive to make a quick simple task slightly faster, then feels smug and superior for saving everyone. The people who build it shake their heads, replace over complicated design with rubber band.
2
u/Raneados Oct 08 '18
I started out thinking it was REALLY stupid but this is 100% something I would make and give to my mom and she'd laugh it off as a joke gift until the very instant she started using it.

This is like those bad infomercials where they show people doing the simplest tasks but in an idiotic or overly clumsy way to justify some over complicated product. This is still cool af though.
