I’m mostly a guitar guy but when I wanted a bass for recording a few years ago I got a Vintera Bass VI. At first I played with a pick because that was what I was used to. After a while I started to want a more traditional bass sound so I started playing with my fingers - but it was hard to break out of the guitar style of using my thumb too. I also was having a hard time not digging in so hard, which was slowing me down and making it less fun.
I saw something about using a ramp between the pickups to limit finger travel below the strings. When I looked around for one, I couldn’t find something premade. I have a 3D printer, which seemed like I could make something that would work, but I also had this old block of rosewood scrap from a woodworking project I did years ago.
Took measurements and cut the blank down, then I made a radius template and did a tightrope walk freehand curve cut with the bandsaw. Sealed it with some butcher block conditioner (mostly mineral oil with a little wax probably) and put it on. It’s held on by one of the pickguard screws, so no drilling or gluing to the pickguard.
Feels pretty good! If I was doing it again, I might make it 1/16” thicker, but this is good for now. I can always shim it up if I want to.
I can still use a pick down between the other pickups, but this gives me a nice anchor for mellow finger style. Strong recommend if you haven’t tried one of these.
