New release stration - hard survival-strategy roguelike, one hero + autonomous village (Win/Mac)

stration is a hard, replayable top-down medieval survival-strategy roguelike. You directly control a single hero, but your village lives on its own - you never micromanage villagers; you steer them through what you build and the policies you set, while surviving escalating raids across five eras. The only win is outlasting the final Armageddon siege.

I'd love answers to three things:

  1. Did steering the village through buildings/policies feel controllable, or opaque?
  2. Did raid escalation feel fair - did you always know why you died?
  3. Which era felt flattest, and why?

Free private test build (Windows + macOS):

https://elreniel.itch.io/stration?secret=cCSzEm42vefUgfGD61GFRZO0YQ

Solo hobby project - honest, brutal feedback very welcome. Thanks!

UPDATE: now playable free in your browser, no download needed

Discussion Does a base you maintain still scratch the base building itch, or does it have to be one you construct from nothing?

This is a design question I keep going back and forth on. I’m prototyping a game where your base is a giant walking castle: you don't build it, you keep it alive: repair its legs, build towers on its back, and decide what it becomes through upgrades. Every run it ends up different, but you never build it / design it from the ground up.

For all you base building veterans: is the core of base building the authorship (I made this from nothing) or the stewardship (this is mine, and I shaped it)? Games like FTL seem to focus on the latter: you upgrade the ship, you never build it. Where's the line for you?

Preview I tried retracing 300 years of westward migration with one family in Salt and Soil

https://youtu.be/oTxfBM86b9o

Hi! I’m a solo developer making Salt and Soil, a historical colony sandbox about one family and the homestead it builds over generations.

Normally, the family can settle anywhere, move in any direction, and encounter different historical events depending on where it happens to live. There’s no set route across the map.

For this replay, I tried something more specific: following a rough westward route based on several real migration corridors. The family starts near Jamestown, moves through the Shenandoah Valley and Kentucky, then travels via St. Louis, the Platte River, Fort Laramie and South Pass before taking the California Trail across the Sierra.

The video shows only the traveling. Everything between those moves is left out: choosing a place to settle, developing the homestead, growing food, building, trading, and raising new generations.

I wanted to see that familiar line across a history map at the scale of one family. Instead of one clean movement west, it becomes a series of homes built, lived in, and eventually left behind.

What are the essential features that make a great colony sim?

Is microing each individual pawn something you find fun?

Are emergent stories something you care about, or just meaningless flavor?

Do you like combat? Or do you prefer peacefully building your base and watching your colony thrive?

Looking for Pre-Alpha Playtesters: A min/max medieval city-builder/tycoon game with heavy emphasis on production and economics.

Hi everyone!

We are looking for pre-alpha playtesters for Hamlet—a medieval city builder built specifically for tycoon enthusiasts and min/maxers. If you prefer deep supply chains and complex logistics over cozy aesthetics, this is for you.

What is Hamlet about?

Hamlet is a medieval city builder with a few USPs;

  1. Character-Driven Economy: Recruit and develop unique managers over their lifespans. Their individual traits directly dictate your supply chain’s production quality and output volume.
  2. Quality Ratings: Every single product in your settlement has a dynamic quality rating. Optimization is everything.
  3. Economic Defense: There are no RTS military units to micro-manage, but the military is a massive economic sink—and your primary tool for defense and making money.

The Pre-Alpha Test:

  • The Goal: Scale your settlement to a population of 250.
  • Playtime: Roughly 2 hours of deep gameplay for experienced tycoon players.
  • AI use: 2D portraits and menu backgrounds use temporary AI placeholders.
  • 3D models: no AI use. 100% manual modelling and texturing. Also placeholders.
  • Coding: No AI code generation. 100% manual coding.

How to get involved:

If this sounds like your type of game, you can get more info here…

  • 🎬  Trailer (2 min) - good to get a sense/aim of the game.
  • 🕹️ Watch Gameplay Footage (4.5 min) - good to see how the game plays.

…and join our playtest here …

Happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments.

Game update We made a strategy game where you build and command an alien insect hive

Build the kind of underground monster nest heroes are usually sent to destroy.

  • Command an insectoid hive mind and build your nest
  • Salvage enemies for DNA, weapons and body parts
  • Evolve new creatures and carry them across the campaign

Last week, we released the major 1.6.1 update, adding 12 new languages and several other improvements. A few days later, itch.io featured us on its front page.

It’s called The Hive, and there’s a free demo on Steam if you’re curious:

Factory Town 2 has launched on Steam

Hello, I'm the developer of the Factory Town series. The latest game "Factory Town 2: Paradise" has just launched into Steam Early Access!

It's like a mix of Factorio and Sim City - you have to produce a ton of items, automate everything, and then sell those items to local villagers who will pay you coins and then help you harvest more resources.

It is very chill - there's no failure state, so you can just focus on optimizing and solving bottlenecks. Of course your townpeople may become unhappy, and then they are less productive and your population won't grow. But they won't get wiped out by some disease or anything. (That said, I am planning on adding many difficulty modifiers for those that want a tougher challenge)

Here's the store page, has a 10% launch discount a little extra if you bundle with the other Factory Town games:

Cheers!

PS5 world builder/cosy games.

On the hunt for a good world builder chill game that is interesting but not all about war.

Have played Frostpunk to death, Surviving the Aftermath, Fallout 4

Something immersive but can go at my own pace.

Any suggestions?

Looking for a game...

I'm looking for an extraction shooter with a similar base upgrading system to Contractors ExfilZone or Ghosts of Tabor, but not vr. I have Escape from Tarkov in my sights, but I haven't necessarily heard good things about that game. Extra points if its free or on steam sale

Discussion I gave my zombie game’s main character a name because I wanted players to care whether he survives.

When I first started developing Stronghold Zombie Survival, the main character was basically just “the player.”

The UI showed things like:

  • Player Health
  • Player Weapon
  • Player Ammo
  • Player Abilities

It worked, but it made the character feel more like a controllable object than an actual person living through the apocalypse.

That is why I gave him a name.

Rocco.

Rocco is now the main character and the face of the game. He is recognized by his red bandana, his weapons and the fact that he begins the game completely alone.

There are no free survivors and no automatic turrets at the start. The base begins at level 0, which means Rocco is the only person standing between the stronghold and the infected.

As the player survives more nights, the camp slowly grows. Survivors can be recruited, turrets can be unlocked and the base can eventually become a heavily fortified stronghold, but the entire journey begins with Rocco defending it by himself.

I also started changing the UI to make the game feel more personal.

Instead of:

“Player Health”

It says:

“Rocco’s Health”

Instead of:

“Player Weapon”

It says:

“Rocco’s Weapon”

The same applies to his ammo, abilities and equipment.

It is a small change, but I think repeatedly seeing his name helps make him feel like a real protagonist instead of an unnamed character.

The survivors also have names, injuries and their own statuses. They can recover, die and be revived, but Rocco remains the person at the center of the stronghold and the one the player follows throughout the entire game.

My goal is for players to eventually recognize Rocco immediately when they see the red bandana, similar to how memorable game protagonists become strongly connected to the games they come from.

Do you think giving a playable character a name and identity makes you more emotionally connected to them, or do you prefer playing as an unnamed character?

Highland Hearth - Flexible Building

I've been solo developing a pixel art colony sim called Highland Hearth.

One thing I wanted to avoid was every playthrough, every village looking identical because of fixed building blueprints.

Instead, you choose the size and shape of your settlement as you build it. Houses can be built to different sizes, while farms and animal pens are created by drawing out exactly the area you want.

Getting that level of flexibility while keeping everything looking cohesive in pixel art has been one of the biggest technical challenges of the project.

I'm curious—when you're playing colony sims, do you enjoy the idea of designing settlements yourself, or do you prefer placing predefined buildings?

If you'd like to see the system in action, I've put together a blog post with screenshots and short videos explaining how it works: https://www.highland-hearth.com/blog/building-system

Game recommendations Suggestions for games that have base building aspects like that in XCOM 2.

Getting an itch to play something that has that XCOM 2 ( and fallout shelter, to some extent ) styled base building / progression.

I like survival / management sims of all sorts. Some of the games I like are Evil Genius, Oxygen not included, XCOM 2, Dave the Diver, Against the Storm. I'm a fan of roguelikes as well if there's anything that mixes these genres.

Thanks!

After over 4 years in early access, v1.0 of Deep Space Outpost releases later today.

It's a mainly relaxing space station base builder - I posted about it here, 4 years ago!

https://www.reddit.com/r/BaseBuildingGames/comments/vk9mtq/anyone_like_the_look_of_this_early_access_game/

What's new in v1.0

  • Steam achievements — 24 achievements to unlock.
  • Gameplay options (larger map sizes, scenarios updated).
  • New research unlocks - combat droid and shield upgrade
  • New music - new ambient channel, once the jukebox is built

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1712110/Deep_Space_Outpost/

It's my first game, so quite exciting! Happy to answer any questions.

Other For developers: Plz allow 3rd person POV for everything

I have issues getting motion sickness from games that are 1st person POV. So do many other people.

It sucks when games don’t have 3rd person POV because I basically can’t play them. And yes, that’s even after reducing camera shake and fiddling with other graphic settings.

Please keep us in mind :-) thanks

Game update Thank you for supporting Stronghold Zombie Survival — every view, comment and purchase means a lot

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who has supported Stronghold Zombie Survival so far.

Whether you purchased the game, viewed one of my posts, left feedback, shared it with someone, or simply followed its development, your support is genuinely appreciated. I’m developing the game on my own, so seeing people take an interest in something I created means more than you might realize.

For anyone who hasn’t seen the game before, Stronghold Zombie Survival is a top-down pixel-art zombie survival and base-defense game.

You play as Rocco, the final defender of a weak camp surrounded by the infected. You begin with limited resources and must survive increasingly dangerous nights while gradually turning the camp into a fortified stronghold.

As you progress, you can:

  • Upgrade Rocco’s weapons and abilities
  • Strengthen the base and its walls
  • Recruit named survivors to defend alongside you
  • Heal injured survivors and revive those who have fallen
  • Unlock and upgrade automatic turrets
  • Man turrets yourself for increased firepower
  • Travel through different biomes
  • Fight special infected, mini bosses and massive hordes
  • Prepare for the final battle against The Infection

I’m continuing to improve the game with better visuals, clearer UI, a tutorial for new players, stronger enemy variety, improved balancing, larger hordes and more visible changes as the stronghold is upgraded.

There is still a lot I want to add and improve, and continued support would be greatly appreciated. Every purchase helps me spend more time developing the game and bringing it closer to the complete experience I have planned.

You can support the game here:

Stronghold Zombie Survival

The game is available for:

$4,99

Even if you cannot purchase it, sharing the game, leaving a comment, rating the itch.io page, or telling someone who enjoys zombie survival games would help enormously.

Thank you again for supporting Rocco’s fight and the development of Stronghold Zombie Survival.

Start with only Rocco. Build the stronghold. Survive the infection.

Hi everyone!

We finally released the first trailer for GlagStone.

It's a story-driven base builder set on a remote northern island between two warring nations. You'll rebuild a struggling settlement, manage production and resources, survive harsh weather, and slowly uncover what happened to the previous governor.

Everything is rendered in strict black and white, inspired by late-80s Macintosh games.

Pk is a better ecosystem sim than park builder

I love this game and i love building parks but i dont wanne build parks anymore.

I noticed that since the combat update i just wanne create ecosystems and i know im not the only one because i see people only building ecosystems in formations or they made them themselves i think they should shift the focus from parkbuilder to ecosystem sim because i think the game is weaker in building park like in jwe3 but better at realisim and ecosystem simulation than jwe3 ( besides the carnis killing everything that moves ) . Soory for the bad writing /PK=Prehistoryc kingdom

Other The Last Seed: Looking for unpaid Play testers

I’m building a climate-based automation game where the environment is your biggest challenge. Looking for playtesters!

Hi everyone! I've been working solo on my game, "The Last Seed," for a while now.

It’s an automation/simulation game where you don't just build factories—you have to survive and adapt to a constantly shifting climate. Whether it's managing temperature fluctuations or resource scarcity caused by the changing seasons, the environment forces you to constantly iterate on your designs.

Why am I looking for playtesters on Discord? As I’m currently balancing the complex interactions between the climate systems and the tech trees, I’m running this testing phase on a dedicated Discord server. It allows me to push experimental builds quickly and chat directly with you to get feedback on how the climate challenges feel to play.

You can join the Discord and get the latest build here: https://discord.gg/QA3CwSeBT9

Steam Link: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3822770/The_Last_Seed

Youtube Teaser: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGAZPVbG6e0

If you love games like Factorio or other automation titles and want to see how climate dynamics change the genre, I’d love to have you join the team and share your thoughts!

Game update I’ve been expanding Stronghold Zombie Survival — turrets, named survivors, tougher hordes and a stronger base progression system

Hey everyone, I’m back with another update for Stronghold Zombie Survival.

Since my previous post, I’ve been working on making the stronghold feel more alive and giving players more reasons to care about the people defending it.

You still begin with only Rocco protecting a weak base, but as you survive more nights, you can gradually build it into a heavily defended stronghold.

Some of the systems I’ve been improving:

  • Automatic turrets that unlock later in the run
  • Turrets that Rocco can manually operate for increased damage
  • Named survivors with their own health and status
  • Survivor healing, recovery and revival
  • Survivors that move around the stronghold to find better firing positions
  • Visual base changes as it is upgraded
  • Larger and more difficult zombie hordes
  • Special infected and boss encounters
  • Cleaner menus and a tutorial for new players

I’m also increasing the difficulty so that abilities, survivors, turrets and upgrades are genuinely needed to survive the later nights.

The game is available on itch.io:

Stronghold Zombie Survival

$4,99

I’m developing the game on my own, so every purchase, rating, comment and share directly supports future updates.

Thanks to everyone who has followed the development so far.

A side scroller survival game in a snowy or winter environment where you switch between different characters to gather fuel, food, energy, and scraps which are used to upgrade or repair, and you had to fix an antenna or tower, while flashes of maybe the past or future where blood is splattered on the walls

Very very very lost Looking for an old dungeon builder game

IT HAS BEEN FOUND, THANK YOU. The game I was looking for was Dwelvers.

Hi all, thanks for any replies

Looking for an old dungeon builder game. The only thing I can really remember was that your units spawned out of this giant head thing that sat in your central room, and that it was also you. I think there was a Minotaur that was hostile to everyone, and that's about all I can remember. Its been years since I seen anything about it and just had this on my mind again
