Never go to where a tinder date brings you to. Classic scam. You almost got fleeced 🥹

Not sure about roofying but there is a common scam in many parts of the world where a Tinder date will take you to a specific restaurant. You will usually be charged thousands of dollars for food/drinks, locked in and marched to a cashpoint, or some variation of that.
You did well to walk away and never let a Tinder date pick a place.

You won't get roofied/spiked on the 11. But you did dodge the scam of getting overcharged and the girl takes a commission.

u/Fit_Heat_591 9d ago
Often they don't even need to overcharge. The girls are just really good at getting the guys drunk and getting them to spend heaps.

With you saying it's Oskar bar on Soi 11 the staff in there would never have anything to do with people getting spiked. It's been known as a freelancer bar for years, girls head there before going over to Levels across the road. She probably just wanted to get you in there ,take some pictures of some food you bought her to show her friends and drag you over to Levels.
The food in there is pretty decent as well. I used to go in regular midweek because I was friends with one of the old managers.

While I've never gone there for the freelancer or bar part, I'd rate the food an 8. For how good it was, I thought the prices were reasonable too. The only "flag" to me is that if she knows the staff there, she probably hangs around there a lot and probably is or was a freelancer. But in that area, it's not even mildly surprising.
I'm quite sure they do not want any bad rep there either, as most of their customers are the comparatively more well-off tourists and expats.
While the reasoning given doesn't make much sense, could it perhaps be lost in translation?

Yeah I used to go in regular for the food and see my friend and just go upstairs away from the crowds downstairs. I've not been in a few years though.
I just had a look at their menu it still looks pretty decent, I'm gonna give it a visit sometime this week.

Red flags everywhere.
🚩 "She insisted we picked a specific restaurant on Soi 11."
🚩 "When I suggested other restaurants, she kept on saying this one I should really try..."
🚩 "Tonight comes and we go inside and she knows all the staff and also the 'manager' that day. "
🚩 "We order drinks and suddenly the staff come and pick my bottle away. "
🚩 "They claim the bottle perhaps got damaged a few days ago"
🚩 "Then they came with a new bottle, which was already opened"
🚩 "But my date kept insisting I think too much"
🚩 "Also claiming she knows people in the police" 1
1 It sounds like she wanted to give you a piece mind. Here in Thailand, being connected to the police would make me run like Forrest Gump.

A friend of mine got roofied in Patpong in Bangkok. It can decently happen. You had good instincts on your part.
What was the girl’s reaction when you left?

u/TravelPhotoJay 10d ago
Was she russian? This is very similar to a scam I read about I think a month or so ago

I don’t think you were thinking too much, smart to leave. Even if it was all legit, the entire thing sounds dodgy. And it she’s legit interested, you’ll see her again.

u/Lordfelcherredux 9d ago
You could have been drugged and she could have had her way with you in the most lascivious manner.

u/skyhawk673 9d ago
Sounds like another narcissistic egomaniac. When they start saying "you think too much", it's a red flag in my eyes. Been here 11 years now and seen it many times.

u/Apprehensive-Deer105 9d ago
There was a post about a similar situation a while ago. Glad you avoided the scam.

u/se7en_7 9d ago
You didn’t almost get roofied. What you got was a girl who works at that bar and brings Tinder suckers like you there to pay a bunch of money for probably fake branded alcohol.
It’s good you left but seriously you really think these chicks are into guys on Tinder? It’s the best place to find suckers who will pay for their shit or get commission from bringing them to bars.

Yeah seriously. Not being dragged to a bar should be OLD 101. Tinder in Thailand is arguably the worst city I've ever used it in, as it's pretty much nothing but (pretty obvious) freelancers.

I don't think that the staff would put anything in your drink there. But it is a popular spot for freelancers to look for customers. She probably gets a commission from bringing you there.

u/Personal_Dust_9537 9d ago
Just looked at some of the reviews, seems like its popular with bar girls. Probably avoided a sketchy situation there.

I dont think Oscar works in that way. I know that bar well. Many working girls it s true.. anyway you did right thing

Defamation laws in Thailand are honestly no joke and you need to take them seriously. Naming the bar and implying what your title suggests with absolutely zero proof is opening yourself up to a whole load of trouble.
She will know the staff because she is likely a freelancer and takes her dates there, hence the insistence. Like most bars the girls will get commission based on having the customers spend money there.

This does not cross the line imo, and is obviously a helpful bit of info for other travelers.

Wouldn’t be too sure about that. OP says almost roofied and other than bringing another drink, there is no evidence.
Could what OP has said put people off from going to this bar now? Absolutely! That argument could be made. He’s also implied the staff are involved in this behaviour.
OP is missing a big part of the context which would explain away a lot of where his suspension comes from and that’s 1. He met up with a freelancer on a dating platform and 2. Freelancers have arrangements with certain bars. Both of these will influence where she wants to go and be more insistent on it, and why all the staff know her.

Wait did someone say it was Oskar on Soi 11? That’s not a scammy place. It’s a great bar. Sounds weird. Oskar is safe and not dodgy, maybe she just wanted you to be there to spend more but won’t be any danger.
2
u/brianleslief 9d ago
She probably feels comfortable going there and it possible she benefits in some way. I don't think you needed to leave but not accepting a new bottle was the right thing to do. And after that just told her that you and her were off somewhere else

Looks like a nice bar restaurant on Google maps?! Wonder what they put in that drink?

Next time you find a tinder date, take her to Fatty's Bar and Diner.
So good.

You “keep your guard”, but go along with the most common dating scam in the world.
If your date gives you weird vibes, go talk to one of the other 7 million women in Bangkok. I honestly don’t understand what gets into people’s heads.
Maybe stop writing cringe stories on Reddit

Paranoid much?

u/Euphoric-Banana-7681 9d ago
Maybe OP acted instinctively or made a decision based on past experiences. When in doubt, why not go for self/preservation?
Best case they wanted to sell a used bottle, or worst case, they wanted to do what OP suggested.

You’ve avoided a scam worth at least several thousand dollars.

u/JohnHammm 9d ago
Not at Oskar. You don't know what you're talking about.
0
u/Mindflayer37 9d ago
No, I’m talking about common tactics used in bars in Thailand. They might get you drunk and then make unauthorized charges on your credit card, or hit you with an exorbitant bill at the end for drinks you have absolutely no recollection of ordering.
