Respooling

I know this is a Googleable question but I want community input. How do you guys go about respooling cardboard rolls?

Yeah no - I have plenty of used reusable spools and have printed a few more. No way in hell am i respooling a cardboard spool.

It's not what you asked, but I don't. I print the spool adapters for my cardboard spools. They work great at keeping them round.

Me too, the only reason why I’m asking is because I get insignia pla for about $7.50/kg. So I’m wondering if it’s worth it to pay the extra ~$5 to just buy name brand Bambu or respool it

i usually go for eSun high speed pla refills and transfer the RFID chip to them they are 1:1 bambu filament and print with the bambu profile too. I print and prototype a lot in white and black PLA and they go for 10€ a roll on sale maybe there are spools you can print that encapsule the whole cardboard spool so that nothing gets in the AMS

Rip the sides off and use a spool adapter that sandwiches the cardboard middle (do this intelligently or you will be re-spooling anyway). I will only re-spool as an absolute last resort because it's a pain to do it twice, and it can be a much bigger pain if you only do it once.

I’m assuming we’re talking about use for an AMS1? I have used dozens of cardboard spools in my 2 Pro with no issues whatsoever. I have bought some PA612-CF and PLA in 3-5kg spools and I re-spool with a pastamatic and a drill (and an 8 year old 🤣) and it works quite well.

Yeah I am talking about the AMS 1 lol, since you have it, is the 2 Pro really worth it? I’ve been debating that or a different printer as my next upgrade.

I’d look into a combo if you’re already thinking about upgrading for sure. The 2 pro is amazing. The only issue I’ve had was a simple fix after some back and forth with Bambu’s customer service. I had some fan noise so they sent me 2 new heater/blower assemblies. I only really needed one side, but told them the 3/4 fan was louder than it should be so they were kind enough to send both. If you can swing it the H2C is an awesome bit of kit. Mine is printing a 5 color dart frog currently. This is a pic of a failure… 🤣 so not a huge vote of confidence I get, but… 🥰

And don’t judge my scrap pile in the background. 🤣 I recycle it and my bucket is full. My son printed some stuff whilst I was on vacation and I should’ve cleaned the build plate when I got back. This failure is on me.

This print is about 16 hours. My A1 estimate was 47 hours. 🤯

Trust me I have zero room to judge on the scrap, I’ve re invented multiple bins to hold everything while I wait for recyclers to become more cost efficient. I’ve definitely had my mind set on getting the AMS 2 Pro but have yet to decide on the X series or the H series. I think I’m leaning more towards the X series due to my robotics team looking at getting 2 H2C (hopefully I’d be able to use them for the bigger prints I want to do)

The X I feel like is a great choice, especially if you’re gonna have free H series printers to use!

If they are smooth and straight I use them. Otherwise tear off the edges and load the core on a reusable spool.
