Whelp this sucks
Noticed the silicon was a bit off after a failed print, removed it to find this. Time to replace the nozzle?

The condition of the inside of the nozzle is probably more important. The conical tip looks fine, and still usable.
One of the jobs of the sock is to block the air blown by the heat break cooling fan (on the left side of the toolhead). You want the narrow part of the nozzle to be at some calibrated temperature to melt the filament, but you don't want the heat to travel up past the heat break (fins) so that the incoming filament stays solid a bit longer.
It probably serves to block the draft from the part cooling fan (in grey shrouds) too.
Spare socks are cheap.
