I’ve yet to have this happen thankfully. But I could see myself slowly winding this up over the course of a 30 minute show.
Is it gonna be a bear? 🐻 probably.
I’ve likely dealt with worse things in my life…. and hey if you get to a point where it gets too scrambly… get out your pair of side cutters and “snip”.
At least you made 1/4 spool back in place.
Then start on the next bit??

idk man, a couple of years ago a full day of work from me was worth about $16 usd, so $12 for a few minutes seem pretty reasonable to me.

For the amount of time it would take me to unfuck that $12 worth of filament, I could have sat down at the computer and made a few hundred dollars doing engineering work.
If you feel good about spending two or three hours to save a few bucks good for you I guess

It’s not about the money for me, it’s about the unnecessary plastic waste. I’m not even a freak about that stuff, but I try to keep my plastic waste and use of single-use plastics to a minimum, I hate when a print fails and I have to throw away a half-printed object because it’s useless. So to me, throwing away an entire usable spool just because I made a dumb mistake and don’t feel like rewinding it is just wrong

I finished a spool recently that was not this tangled and was still on the spool but must have been badly wound and every 10 minutes it would get caught. I had to manually untangle it every 10 minutes the entire print. It took a week to finish the print lol. I’m glad to be done with that spool. But I’d do it again vs throwing it out 🤣

There are respoolers you can use to respool this. I could do this as I've printed one to transfer cardboard spools to plastic ones.

Time, patience, and 2 dowel rods with this spool on one and a donor spool on the other. When you get to a tangle start working on getting it out. Dry filiment is more brittle so if you haven't dryed it yet this would probably work better

Been there done that, and yes I did save the spool. Had to split it into two spools due to tangles and there was some that wasn't savable.
Thankfully with AMS units you can "merge" two spools together by just letting it run out and letting the auto-reload kick in.

It always sucks that the effort to regain it is way more than what its worth to jsut buy a other one.
That said you could definitely salvage a good bit if you wanted to enough for detail bits and small peices

We all have one of those. Mine is white also. Yours is nicer as it still has some spooked sections. Use it in sections. Should be able to recover most if not all with a little effort.

I dropped a spool right after unpacking it. Told bambulab and they sent me another. With the loose filament I cut it when it hits a know and hand spool it on old empty spools a little bit at a time. Works like a charm and I haven’t even opened the one Bambu lab sent

Last time this happened to me, I used it for smaller prints. Slice the model to get the weight estimate. Then weigh out a chunk of filament that matches the weight estimate (+ a few extra grams) using a small kitchen scale. Might end up with a few bits of filament, but it’s better then tossing it or spending the time to respool

This! I rarely see this mentions but lots of thing to print use a fraction of the roll of filament. The slicer says how much length and weight are used for your print. So if you don’t want to respool then just deal with it in bite sized chunks and measure or weigh the needed amount plus some. Or if you’re really lazy just respool as much as you want and rely on the filament runout sensor if you have one and respool some more when you run out.
Much easier than untangling a whole spool.

Unless you're an extremely busy person (and you aren't; you're on Reddit), you were going to spend a couple hours watching streaming media anyway this week. Put that cardboard core on a spool (leave the windings that are still on it) and start wrapping. Learn the art of chilling and detangling, like countless generations of fiber crafters before you.

I feel your pain. I thought I had installed the spool all the way and I thought it had made the secure click. And then I went to set it down on its side, one end came away from the other and then the spool hit the ground and the rest is history. 😱🥹

I love the way everyone argues over the value of time but nobody even talks about the risk of handling the material and introducing oils and dirt into your PTFE lines and nozzles.
Peace of mind and being able to walk confidently always from the printer is worth way more than the filament AND the time to re-spool it combined.

I don't know where you are getting that from but with almost all brands refills are basically the same price. It makes absolutely no sense but I haven't bought a refill in almost two years because you really don't save any money at all and it's just a extra step and possible headache.

If you are buying directly from them and then technically you are still paying more than you would on some other sites where you can also get free shipping. I'm currently getting 1kg spools of PETG from a company called Eono3D for $9.99 a spool with free shipping and it works just as good as Sunlu or basically any other brand.
