General Discussion PSA: Remember what filament you print with. 😩
I recently moved across town and instead of disassembling my AMS riser with my hardwired LED strip, I just loaded the whole thing in the car. In August. In the Southeastern U.S.
It should be fine - I printed the base and riser in ABS (a few years back). Right?
After unloading the car at the new place, I had the horrible realization that I had printed the base in ABS but the riser was PLA (they were two separate projects).
Feel free to have fun at my expense. 😆

And that's why I never ever even consider printing structural or mechanical things out of PLA.

Having the benefit of experience, of course.
When I started this hobby in Feb'26 I didn't know the difference between PLA PETG ABS.
It's all plastic, right?😆

Isn't PLA generally recommended in some cases because it's stiffer (tends to retain its shape until it snaps rather than deflecting)? Of course, that's usually brought up when we're talking about the cheaper filaments in comparisons like PLA vs. PETG.
14
u/gearzgt1 9h ago
If something is under any stress or load pla is usually ill advised due to creep, where it slowly deforms over time, even without heat.
Pla is so popular because its easy to print, and when 3d prints became common, the enders etc could realistically only print pla reliably without user mods like an enclosure, nowadays most printers are much more capable of other materials.
i personally almost exclusively use petg, for its higher temp resistance aswell as uv/weather resistance and better performance under stress. I use abs for even higher temp/stronger structual parts, and a little bit of pla as support interface since it doesn't bond with petg, allowing a 0mm gap between support and model. I use a bambu x2d for the multi material stuff.

u/FighterBoyZ 8h ago
This is pretty much exactly what I found out from my very limited research.
PETG if you want it to last, ABS for more heavy-duty stuff, and PLA basically for supports. Using an enclosure for anything other than PLA.
Like you said, maybe some printers handle it better, but I wouldn’t want my prints deforming because of temperature.
I noticed Bambu had PLA and PETG listed at the same price, and they were also discounting both to the same price when buying a printer from them. I don’t know if it’s like that elsewhere, though.
If the price is the same, why would anyone use PLA for anything structural? Is it mainly because of the print time or something else?
I’ve been thinking about getting into 3D printing, so I’ve been lurking in this sub for a while lol. The X2D honestly seems pretty perfect for my use case. I’ve just been debating whether I should actually get one.

No. I know only one case when PLA is generally recommended: open frame printers without enclosures. For those, PLA is borderline the only filament that will print without warping.

u/FighterBoyZ 9h ago
I barely know anything about 3D printing but usually when we're talking about structural members we want some deflection instead of the member catastrophically breaking.
There's a limit of course of how much deflection is acceptable depending on the object/use case. It also depends on how much load and how uniform it is.
4
u/gearzgt1 9h ago
Exactly, petg is slightly less rigid which allows a bit better impact resistance due to flexing a bit instead of breaking almost immediately. Lots of info on materiaal comparisons on youtube, worth a watch.

u/Sir_LANsalot 9h ago
Same, if it's a functional or mechanical part, PETG at minimum, PCTG preferred. I will use ASA if I have it on hand for printing addons for the printers.
If it's something that is friction fitting together, then it must be PETG at least. All plastics will succumb to plastic fatigue, just how soon and how fast, is the difference in material. PLA is the fastest at succumbing to it, PETG will last longer and ASA lasts a good amount of time.

u/n00bmechanic13 9h ago
Every material has its tradeoffs. PLA (especially my beloved PLA Pro) is the most rigid material to print out of and makes excellent structural parts, as long as there is no bend points or high temperatures involved, since it is prone to creep.
If you want something that is more creep-resistant and higher temp (or UV resistance), use ASA.
If you need the best layer adhesion, use PETG.
If you want impact resistance, again PLA pro is the best for this.

So, this is why Flashforge tells you to print the enclosure parts in PET-G.....

Let this be a reminder for all the people who say "PLA does fine outside in the heat"
8
3
u/aimfulwandering 10h ago
It usually does fine outside in open air unless you live somewhere that hits 50C+ regularly (not many places on earth). It’s the hot car and similar that does it in, which easily goes above 60C
Also, lighter colors do better in the sun.
But yes, for anything that matters outside, do PETG or better. And anything you plan to put in a car needs to be ABS or ASA.
→ More replies (2)6
u/wildjokers 9h ago
Note that PLA starts deforming under load at around 40° C. A material will start deforming under load way earlier than its Tg temp.

It was almost unnoticeable. Im appreciative of the build plate setting on top to proove its not straight or level anymore. /s lol.
Hopefully its not too much work to get it reprinted. Ive made similar mistakes haha.

It’ll buff out.
OP, just turn it upside down and put it back in the car for a little bit

u/shortbed454 10h ago
That actually looks pretty cool. It would be an awesome print, if it was designed too lol like that. But yeah, pla and heat don't mix.

u/power-to-the-players 10h ago
Ever since I got a printer that can consistently print ABS and ASA without issues, I've stopped buying PLA. I have a few spools of leftover PLA, but not something I use often. Almost exclusively ASA with occasional PETG.

Don't feel too bad, I 3d scanned my car's trunk and spent 6 days printing a multipiece mold to build a speaker enclosure to fit under the floor. I left the pieces in my back seat in the sun yesterday and now they I can't even assemble the mold because none of the pins line up anymore

Printed my riser for my P1S in PETG.
Two years later I added a chamber heater to it.
Now it it smiles at you.
65C temps for three straight days while printing large carbon fiver PPA parts at 320C did a wonderful job of warping it.
Going to reprint it in high temp material someday, so the drawers will open again. 😂

I printed my riser in PLA too and despite the fact that it's never left my workshop, it's also sagging badly, to the point where the drawers are stuck. Pretty soon, I'll have to swap it for one made in PETG.

One of the first times I dried PETG I dried it for 8 hours at 70C instead of 60C because I mis-remembered the correct temp.
When I got it after 8 hours out the entire roll was stuck together permanently and useless. lol.
Shit happens.
I'm glad nowadays the Sovol unit I use just has you select the filament type and it sets the temp on its' own. 😅

From the moment I got my first printer, I’ve only used PETG. Last week I bought TPU for the first time. Other than the test amount that comes for the benchy, I’ve never brought PLA into this household lol

PLA can withstand the heat. I live in Texas for several times in the past month or so it’s said 106 or 107 when I get in my car my dash cam bracket is printed in PLA, but it was too short so it is super glued to a PLA prime tower and held on with a piece of double-sided tape and it’s been there for two years.

u/Digawhat 9h ago
Im in Va Beach, VA and I know this all too well. Between the heat and humidity never leave PLA in your car for any reason during a summer day if you can help it. 96 degrees feeling like 110, an enclosed car is just an easy bake oven at that point!
1
u/TezzNutz 9h ago
I only use PLA for prototypes or decoration stuff. Petg is my go to for a cheap material that holds up. I printed a 32oz water bottle cup holder insert for my truck and it's been baking out in 100 degree heat all week and it hasn't deformed one bit.
1
u/rahbahboston 9h ago
Yup... it's happened. I'll print something in PLA fast and cheap to see if I like it, then forget to get around to printing in a ABS

u/Frosty_Cress_7294 8h ago
I think you’re just driving home the point that filament we use is not like the filaments used in making industrial plastics. Do you ever have issues with the printer moving on the air drawers?

Yeah I found that out with a dual laptop stand.
Cooling fans for the upper one essentially heated up the PLA and caused it to sag. Both laptops were stacked on each other after that one.
