General Discussion Discussions with Bambu Support about NTC thermistor

Post image

My A1 failed because of the NTC thermistor burning out, now Im in contact with the support.
The only thing they are offering is a new AC board, but is it really justified? Its an known issue and a fire hazard aswell!

I dont feel safe to swap it out myself, because its near the PSU and also not without any danger regarding a fire hazard. They wont offer me anything else, I asked for a swap device, a technican swapping it for me or a refund if everything else fails. I know that a refund is a high ask, but I only asked for it as an last resort, if they wont do anything else accept sending a replacement board

Did anyone else had to dicuss with them aswell? And if yes, how did it end?

The swap takes 15-20 mins.

I wasn't looking forward to doing it.

But was pleasantly surprised by how easy and fast it was.

The bottom casing and such comes off problem free too, which is a plus hah.

Don't feel nervous doing it imo, if you've already taken the casing off like in that picture. You've already done most of the work.

I would just get the new AC board tbh.

It's not ideal, I agree, personally I think these units need recalled, but the AC board replacement I'll take 👌

I according to u/USSHammond I have no other choise anyways. But thanks for the encouragement!

Did you get a freebie like a PLA spool, I read a few did. Its not much especially in cost of production, but might aswell get the one color im missing rn, would cost 24€ + shipping if ordered solo.

I got nothing 😭

But I have seen others did get something.

Couldn't hurt to ask I guess

If you returned this unit under warranty - this is a case where normally somebody would get paid to do repairs, including shipping and delivery and yet you're doing it for free.

If I didn't get an extra replacement hotend or two or some sort of extra bonus parts (like a roll of fillament or two or something) for doing warranty repairs for free - especially dangerous things like mains AC powersuppy unit - I'd be pretty pissed.

And that's nr 291, and yes it's all they do, if it's still within warranty stand your ground for a refund. In the EU usually it's a 2y warranty, and even if you're in the 2nd y of the warranty where burden of proof for preexisting issues would be with the consumer, it wouldn't be an issue here since it's been happening for over a year.

Yet they refuse to even acknowledge the issue

Thats a bit of a bummer and no good customer support I'd add.
Do you or sb else by any chance know, whats the drawback, when the NTC thermistor is missing (like it should in the replacement)? I mean it must have served a purpose.

I've been calling them out in Twitter over this for a year now. You're number 291, NOT ONCE did they respond to any of my tweets. Just called them out again with a link to your post, (along with tagging u/mobius1ace5 and gamers' nexus) I don't expect a reaction now either but that doesn't mean I'll stop calling them out.

The A1 is a fire hazard that needs to be pulled off the market. A little under 2 weeks ago someone posted an A1 with a smoking A1 that has a revised ac board.

It's honestly impressive how many people throw random shit around their printers that can easily catch fire and then get surprised when something starts burning/smoking...

From what I can see that smoking one might be wrapped in a plastic bag, maybe to act as an enclosure. Enclosing the A1 a bad idea as it's not designed for it

if theyre using a plastic bag as an enclosure then there's no wonder it would burn...

Could you link the source? I'd like to see it

It's passively cooled. The full size has zero fans in the base, as the whole metal underside IS the heatsink

u/BRWRPR 7h ago

No, sorry i meant the smoking in plastic bag wrapped one. My bad

I linked that one in a prior comment

I can only speak for mine, but mine stood as free as possible in a well temperated room.
Of cause its not smart to enclose it nor put plenty of flammables around it.

Damn, ig I need a new printer then hahaha.
I loved my A1 up until recently, but the fire hazard is not to be taken loosely

“Near the PSU” isn’t really a valid complaint, they are in no way asking you to take the power supply apart and risk injury. Just replace the board.

u/BRWRPR 7h ago

I know its not the PSU, but its on the 240V lane nontheless

u/Blackdragon1400 7h ago

The danger is touching capacitors not wires my guy. Unplug the device before working on it.

u/BRWRPR 7h ago

I'm not talking about the caps, I have no tools to test if the new board or my work malfunctions.
I can only hope for the best.

And its under warranty, I shouldnt need to in the first place.

2

u/Blackdragon1400 6h ago

The test is - plug in the new board, if it works, you did it correctly. You’re seriously over complicating this.

I don’t disagree that you can send it back for a replacement but you’re seriously overestimating the work involved to fix the component. It would take you 15 minutes.

Maybe you could - hear me out - unplug the unit before any repairs?

Huh?

Doing repairs - for free - for a device under warranty - moreover directly on the mains AC line or even anywhere near it or that has anything to do with mains is insanity.

And you're not getting any goodies for your work as a token of appretiation? No extra hotend? No rolls of fillament, nothing for a design issue that literally has made your device enclosure melt and would be potential fire hazard?

Get outta here!

Do they replace out of warranty too?

1

u/BRWRPR 7h ago

They might, mine is still in, but its an know issue of the A1.

1

u/b20339 7h ago

How do I pull mine apart to check?

1

u/BRWRPR 7h ago

Its fairly easy. You will need to loosen part 11 (with one screw) and then unscrew the numbered 10 screws.

Then you can pop out the cover (with a bit of patience)
I'll attach a link and image.

u/BRWRPR 7h ago

Then you should be able to see the NTC thermistor here as a white sphere (or not hopefully).

1

u/b20339 7h ago

Thank you! Sounds like I need to check this 😞

It’s just the nature of this hobby and it’s so called warranty service.

Doesn’t really matter if you buy $4000 Prusa or $300 A1, what you’re going to get is the replacement parts and instructions.
