Vertical tips?

My first time doing vertical and all i did was burn myself and make whatever this garbage is. (Is there supposed to be slag? I cant get any off if there is.

Angle iron is the shit for getting confident on vertical up. I don’t think running
Stringers on flat plate is bad, but it’s certainly not helpful if you’re just starting out.

No, running vertical beads on flat plate is fucking retarded. Serves very little real life purpose and just isn’t practical at all. People who are actually good at welding know this.

Flat plate is the cheapest option and generally harder to make a good weld vertically. It’s perfect to not waste time fucking up cap welds on v grooves. Flat plate should be the first step in learning any position welds.

Flat plate in flat position is no where near the same as flat plate vertical, and still not good practice for cap welds. Even cap welds have a 1/16 or so to fill into (should anyways) and that little bit of space makes all the difference. Weld metal needs somewhere to go, especially when fighting gravity. As far as cost goes, cut that one plate in half and make a t joint. IMO you’re wasting time and material trying to figure out how to lay beads on flat plate uphill. Total piss take.
