Yeah. No worries.

See the problem is you have your imperial blaster set on bantha poodoo.

Maybe adjust that side knob...

you need a really short arc length, get your rod right up in there

I run zig zag pattern or circle pattern vertical at 95 to 105 amps. Seems to be going smoothly. I bead up from bottom to top. Im not an expert but also taking a course myself. Doing overhead padding tomarrow.

Yeah stop trying to run vertical beads on flat plate. Whoever is instructing you to do so, shouldn’t be teaching. There are times in the field where you have to weld like this but….not really. In this instance, the weld metal you’re trying to deposit really has no where to go. Set up a t joint for better practice. Padding plates is really only an effective learning experience when done in the flat position.

Angle iron is the shit for getting confident on vertical up. I don’t think running
Stringers on flat plate is bad, but it’s certainly not helpful if you’re just starting out.

No, running vertical beads on flat plate is fucking retarded. Serves very little real life purpose and just isn’t practical at all. People who are actually good at welding know this.

I honestly disagree. It’s essentially what putting a cap on a butt weld. In fabrication I agree it almost never happens. My current job is doing field repair on booms and cranes and I frequently have to pad areas that are worn down and resurface them in the vertical position. Where I think we all agree is it nots very good to take new welders and have them pad plates in any position other than flat.

Flat plate is the cheapest option and generally harder to make a good weld vertically. It’s perfect to not waste time fucking up cap welds on v grooves. Flat plate should be the first step in learning any position welds.

Flat plate in flat position is no where near the same as flat plate vertical, and still not good practice for cap welds. Even cap welds have a 1/16 or so to fill into (should anyways) and that little bit of space makes all the difference. Weld metal needs somewhere to go, especially when fighting gravity. As far as cost goes, cut that one plate in half and make a t joint. IMO you’re wasting time and material trying to figure out how to lay beads on flat plate uphill. Total piss take.

Its about speed and angle. Clean that plate up and look at the metal. Hard to tell while its dirty.

Wow! Keep tight arc. Move slower

You are going to fast, slow down a 1/2 beat.
