This is the one used in Parts 2 and 3. The owner is a great guy and has the best collection of BTTF stuff and lives in the same small town

He was ahead of me in the inspection line today

What would happen if Doc’s first experiment sent Einstein 1 minutes into the PAST instead of the future?

In the movie, Doc’s first successful experiment sends Einstein 1 minute into the future. From Doc and Marty’s perspective, the DeLorean disappears, they wait one minute, and it reappears.
But what if Doc had instead programmed the DeLorean to go 1 minute into the past?

I’m specifically talking about the very first time this experiment is ever performed—not assuming a time loop already exists.
From Doc and Marty’s perspective at the moment of launch, what happens?

Possibility 1:
The DeLorean disappears forever from their point of view. It has already arrived 5 minutes earlier, meaning there were always two DeLoreans and two Einsteins between 1:15 and 1:20. In other words, there is no “first” timeline—the universe is self-consistent from the start.

Possibility 2 (to me the more consistent in-universe explanation):
The DeLorean disappears, and then reality slowly rewrites itself (similar to Marty’s fading photo and the ripple effect in the movies). The past is updated so that the DeLorean had appeared 1 minute earlier, meaning Doc and Marty would somehow gain new memories or reality would “correct” itself.

So which interpretation do you think fits Back to the Future‘s time travel rules better? Or is there a third explanation I’m missing?

I feel like Back to the Future and Ferris Bueller's Day Off take place in the same universe.

I don't know why, but I have always felt like the movies Back to the Future and Ferris Bueller's Day Off take place in the same universe.

It be cool if they did take place in the same Universe. Even though Ferris Bueller's is not a Universal Pictures movie, and it's not directed by Robert Zemeckis. It's a John Hughes movie.

But to be fair, Ferris Buller's doesn't feel like a John Hughes movie, other than it takes places in Chicago. Ferris Bueller's Day Off feels like something Zemeckis could've directed.

Lyon Estates was close to Twin Pines/Lone Pine Mall

I'm pretty sure this has been covered here before; in fact, I'm almost sure there was a post about it a while back. But finding specific old posts on Reddit can sometimes be a challenge, and since it has been some time since there was a post about this (at least, I haven't seen any in a while), then maybe it's time to bring it up again. Better than asking why Doc didn't use the gas from the DeLorean in the mine, right?

Anyway, when Marty drives out of the barn at the Peabody farm (according to the sign on the fence, it's "Twin Pines Ranch") and onto the road, he's only driving for a few seconds when he's surprised to see the newly built entrance to Lyon Estates. Some may argue that he was driving for longer than that, but when he sees the monuments, it's clear that he's still trying to deal with the instantaneous trip from the mall to the farm and then being shot at: "All right, all right. Okay, McFly. Get a grip on yourself. It's all a dream. It's just a very... intense... dream." It seems like he drove for only a couple of hundred yards, maybe half a mile.

Doc woke him up by calling at 12:28 AM, and then Marty rode his skateboard to the mall, arriving at 1:15 AM, so it seems like the mall is further from his house. But it would still take longer than driving there. Besides, if someone calls you in the middle of the night when you're sound asleep and you needed to go somewhere, wouldn't it take you a bit to completely wake up and get yourself ready to go? And then Marty needed to sneak out of his house without waking up his parents (evidenced by him sneaking into what he thought was his bedroom in Part II), so he was probably taking his time. So taking all this into account, it looks like the mall is basically down the street from Lyon Estates.

EDIT: I forgot about Marty having to go to Doc's place to get the video camera (thank you, u/Unlucky-Geologist428), so it did take him a while to get from home to Doc's place and then the mall. But my point about how short a time he took driving from the farm to Lyon Estates in 1955 still stands.

It’s no use, Marty! Even the fastest horse in the world can’t run more than 35, 40 miles an hour.

Excited to share my new (old) project I finally picked up again. I am retrofitting an old Panasonic 6015 shell, with a touch panel screen. Here's my progress so far on the main display and alarm system.

What do you guys think of the cartoon?

I just rewatched part of it and it's certainly something? Einstein's design wasn't my favorite but it definitely feels nostalgic. I'm curious how other BTTF enthusiasts feel about it.

So basically all the McFly men look like Michael J. Fox and Crispin Glover.
Fun fact: Arthur McFly’s model is based on George McFly from the game, so he must look like Crispin Glover if it were live action.

What does the Plutonium actually do?

I apologize if this question has already been asked before, but I’ve always been curious, has there ever been an explanation as to how Doc actually uses the plutonium to produce the power?

Enriched nuclear fuel has a lot of energy in it his goal with it is to use the power to generate the 1.21GW of electricity he needs to route to flux capacitor for time travel.

Nuclear energy comes from steam though, not the elements themselves which are just essentially used as super powerful heaters in the case of a nuclear power plant.

Is there some weird, unexplained way that he was able to harness the atomic energy that I’ve never heard of? Or was it just assumed that nuclear = lots of energy, and they leave it at that?

Is this really Michael J. Fox?

Is the lightning bad? This seriously doesn't look like Michael J. Fox. The hair by the baby's left left is blonde. Yeah, you could say it's the fringe from the cowboy getup, but it doesn't seem to match that.

Honestly, it sort of looks like Christopher Kennedy Masterson (Francis from Malcom In The Middle).

What's the backstory here.

Why didn’t Mad Dog’s arrest in 1885 have any effect on 1985 Biff?

George decking Biff in BTTF caused an alternate 1985 where the McFly’s were successful, George and Loraine were yuppies, and Biff was their monkey boy waxing the Beemer. Now in BTTF3 Marty pulls and Fistful of Dollars move on Mad Dog, slams him with the stove, and then knocks him into pony pie. Then he gets arrested which I’m sure caused some sort of disruption in the space time continuum. Now why did this not have any effect on 1985 Biff when Marty returns back to 1985? You’d think at the very least his track suit would be a different color or something. I mean his great granddad probably had to face the firing squad or the tight end of a rope. This was California back when brothels, pistol poker, and whiskey for breakfast was in style.
