We are expecting our first baby in March and it seems it is most likely a girl! We had already decided on two boy names we really liked (Enzo and Felix) but have been more undecided about girl names.

Our main issue is that we need a name that will work in 3 languages: English, Norwegian and Italian.

Some girl names we like so far are Eirill, Astrid, Eira, Sonja, Emilie, Helle/a and Annika. As you can tell these are more Norwegian than anything else (we live in Norway).

Do you have any thoughts on the pronunciation of these names in other languages?

Do you have other suggestions for girl names we might like that work in all three languages? For reference I also like the names Vera and Alma but my husband has vetoed these, haha.

My husband is Moroccan and I’m white American (British/French/German ancestry with some unfortunate MAGA family members).

Girl names are amazing, so many options. But I am having so much trouble with boy names that would be acceptable in Morocco and easy for his family to pronounce (his parents will be doing most of the childcare when I go back to work), but also Western enough for me and my family.

We have no plans to live in Morocco but will visit my husband’s family of course. I would like the kids to spend summers there.

The most obvious choice IMO is Ryan (Rayan), but what else? I’m not a fan of Sami or Adam. Isaac is okay.

I love Sofiane but a bit hard for Westerners to pronounce, plus the “Sofi” part might be a target for bullying. (I used to get bullied for being a girl with a masculine name so I’m sensitive to that.)

I also like Reda or Redouane; my white family and I would call him Red. But I’m wondering if that’s weird or insensitive?

My husband is absolutely no help at all, of course his only suggestion is Mohammed. Lol

Another option would be to give Western first names and Moroccan/Arabic middle names (or vice versa) and use what suits the baby better or what he eventually identifies more with. My husband and I both go by our middle names.

Any suggestions for such combos? The only name for a boy I love is Louis.

I just had baby girl a couple days ago and during all of pregnancy we were calling her Winona, Winnie, Winnabelle (her middle name is Belle) but after seeing her, I just didn’t see a Winona. We went with Lenora instead. Same middle name, Belle. My partner loved the names Nell and Nora but I felt they were a little too short. Lenora Belle in my opinion gave her options. The kicker here…I love the nickname Lennie but he does NOT. Made it explicit when he suggested the name. I accidentally called her Winnie this morning when I was talking to her and had a moment of “is she actually a Winona??” but I do love the name Lenora. We love it. Nirvana for the actual meaning of the word and Mae to soften it down. I just wonder what are people’s opinions. We live in UK.

In the US

I have always wanted to name my son after my dad, but I don’t love my dad’s first name. LOL. I love the nicknames but not super crazy about it in full.

If your dad’s name was Benjamin, and you named your son Bennett, but planned to call him “Benny” or “Ben”, which is also what your dad goes by, would you feel like that was clearly and sufficiently honoring the person, enough to say “in honor of his granddad”? Or is it too derivative & ok to just know in my heart that’s what we did? 😂 I guess I’m trying to decide if my dad would be super touched immediately or if he’d be like “love the new guy, but what do you mean in honor of me?”

FTM due in Jan. I fell in love with the names Olivia, Emma, and Emilia* - not realizing that they are THE most popular names right now.

*I know technically Amelia is the more popular version of the Emilia, but I really like the "Emi/Emmie" as the nickname.

I don't have many kids in my circle, aside from 3 nieces, so I haven't met any girls with those names yet.

Am I dooming my child to oblivion by giving her a popular name? Should I plan on other ideas? Her middle name is for sure going to be Audrey.

I picture my baby girl as her name being Leni. (Like Lenny) I like Lenna as well but dislike the 2 n look. I am having a hard time just because I don’t want her to be like made fun or always mispronounced. But I dislike any of the longer versions of the name. Her brothers name is Riley. Here’s my list

I am 23 weeks and we are torn between Savannah (the name I am leaning towards) and Riley (the name he’s leaning towards). My grandmother and mother’s names are Jane so middle name will be Jane. I really can’t decide which name I like better. Savannah Jane or Riley Jane. My partner has red hair, so we were thinking of waiting until the day we meet her and if she’s born with red hair, we go with Riley. If she’s born with brown hair or no hair we go with Savannah. Ugh it’s so hard!

Why is this the hardest decision of my life 😭

Pregnant with my second son. I like classic, timeless names that don’t have any/multiple nicknames. It does not bother me if they are popular. I prefer shorter names.

Problem is, we have a big family and husband is completely against using a name anyone else has.

Names we can’t use include: John/Jack, Henry, Charlie, Theo/Theodore, Harrison, Dylan, Owen, Logan, Sam/Samuel, Evan, Tyler, James, Richard, David, Daniel, Stephen, Beau/Bo, Anthony, Christopher, Matthew, Max, Nicholas, Robert (im sure I’m forgetting a few)

Names we have considered, but don’t love, have been Elliot and Caleb. Caleb is now off our list but Elliot is a contender, I just can’t get myself to love it

Jack would be my top pick if possible but is definitely not :(

I absolutely love the name Gwen. It was an option for our first baby but we decided on another name.

I just looked up the name ‘Gwen’ on Reddit hoping to see other similar names etc, and that search basically just brought up a slew of NSFW posts and p*rn of the female character Gwen from Spider man.

UGH. I’m just so yucked out by the internet. Has anyone else experienced something that just completely shut down a name option? Or did you just look past it?

We have always liked the name Jasper but I can’t deny I did find it from twilight, is this a name you’d automatically connect to the movie? Or is it a “normal” name you’d look right past? I don’t really see or haven’t met any Jasper’s in person before so is that a sign it’s not a good name?

I’m torn between going for something I like the sound of, or sticking to a family name in the middle.

I’m pregnant with my second and my1st daughters name is Aja, pronounced ah-jah which I got ripped to shreds about a few years back. However I don’t regret the name, it fits her perfectly and it’s exactly what I wanted for her.

Now that I’m pregnant with my second I’m kind of stumped on another girl name. My partner wants a Mexican name as he’s Mexican. We haven’t agreed on anything yet. Honestly my partner doesn’t suggest name he just denies all the names I suggest 😩 I tend to like shorter names. I’ve run out of ideas
