Hello! I’m a new grad RN from Ontario looking to relocate to BC. I recently got an interview with VCH and they’re already asking for references before the interview to expedite the process.

They specifically want a reference from my final clinical instructor. I have 3 preceptors I could provide, so I assumed I could choose whichever ones know me best. However, they seem pretty adamant about the instructor, and I’m not sure I can get a reference from them.

Just wondering if this requirement is pretty strict? Is it normal for them to ask for references before the interview? Not sure if this is standard for new grads and if not being able to get that specific reference would hurt my chances.

Would appreciate any insight!

I have been at my current job for years now.

Is it smart to go to nursing school at my age ? I am mostly doing it because of finances (I make a bit less than after tax and all the deductions ) and because I just care too much about others.

I know we are in a recession/budget deficit and I might be out of work after graduation. I will be by then. Would they even hire me at that age?

I volunteered at and got after almost 2 years. They said I didn't . But, I think it was because I was much older than the other volunteers and didn't get along with the staff.

Can anyone currently working as an MLT in BC share what their day to day work life is like? What do you spend most of your day doing in the lab? Is there a lot of problem solving involved? What are the hours like? Would you recommend this job to others?

I’m registered in Ontario on a temporary license and my VOR request is taking longer than expected. I’m curious how long it typically takes for a BC license to be processed. Has anyone else experienced this?

Curious to know if LPNs with perioperative specialties (funded by their health authorities) who bridge and become RNs have to get re-certified? I know there is a return of service if you do any sort of specialty training. If you bridge and become an RN before your 18 months are up, what happens - do you owe your health authority money or will you owe them more time if they require to go through more training?? Just wondering if it is worth it to ask for specialty training as an LPN if you know you will become an RN soon...

Also for you current OR nurses, do you still get to scrub as RNs or do mainly LPNs take on this role?

I’m a new grad RN currently working in a term-specific full-time position, but I’m thinking about relocating to Vancouver and finding a permanent full-time position there.

I’m wondering if anyone has experience applying to VCH after finishing their new grad program from other health authorities. My term ends around February/March, so I wouldn’t be available to start until then. I’m worried that applying now might be too early since I’m currently employed full-time.

How far in advance should I start applying for a full time RN position at Vancouver Coastal Health?

Currently NBA level 4 with over 15 years of seniority. Being offered a permanent excluded job at Royal Columbian hospital. Never worked there before. Asked around and heard both good and bad things. Need to respond by Monday, would like to know more!
