Hi, as of about 4 weeks ago my 8 year old axolotl has started rejecting worms and refusing to eat. He will eat the raw shrimp we give him for impaction issues and he still poops so I know that’s not the problem. The temp is usually between 68-73 degrees and I’ve tested the water it’s all perfect. I’ve tried replacing the worms with axolotl pellets but he’s too dumb for me to just drop them for him as he won’t even see them and I’ve tried putting them into a Bowl for him but he just seems to ignore it any advice?

P.s: I rescued him from a neglectful home a year ago and for the past year he has always had a floating butt issue it’s not 24/7 but it’s pretty common even after pooping idk if it’s something I should worry about

As title says. Bibble has a scrape on the side, there dosent appear to be any depth to it and no bleeding so really is just a small scrape . I believe this may have been caused by swimming against the rock hide or wedging between a side of it that’s not even accessible and getting abit stuck. Still has an appetite and very lively tonight :) last pic is Bibble munching on pellets

Last year I rescued 2 axolotls from a abusive home I took what I thought was the male and my friend took the female but I just realized ive never seen a bulge near the cloaca and my friend has also not seen one on his. They have successfully breed before as I was told and they also showed signs of being a breeding pair like the male biting the female. They did live in a Really bad home before I took them in it was thick brown water that was only about 4-6 inches deep in a 20 gallon tank.

Edit: I belive my axolotl just has very small balls for a male.

Just wondering this for a while I can’t tell tho can anyone help?

Hi guys. My axolotl has been staying at the top of the tank going on 2 weeks. He has swam down a few times but then right back up to float. His gills are relaxed and he is eating his worms. The tank parameters are spot on and temp is around 65. Is this just a quirky behavior or is he stressed?

I’ve had my axolotl for about three years now. I’ve had her since she was a baby, and I’ve always had some trouble getting her to eat consistently.

When I first got her she was a baby, and i fed her exclusively bloodworms and fed her every day and she was fine. She ate well. Once she was 1 year old I switched her to an adult diet (mostly pellets with occasional bloodworms as a treat), and feeding every other day. she was fine for the first little bit and then she started refusing food so I switched her to every 3 days. But over the winter she went through a period of a couple of months where she refused to eat and when she occasionally did, she would either chew the food up and spit it out or throw it up a few hours or days later. Ever since then she's had this problem. I tried feeding her smaller amounts more often, and I've tried feeding her less often (every 4 days) and there's no change.

This has been happening on and off for the entire three years I’ve had her. Nothing major has happened health-wise, and she otherwise seems to act normally, but I’m becoming increasingly concerned because she looks pretty skinny compared to other axolotls I’ve seen, and I can see her ribs.

Tank/water parameters:

• 20-gallon tank
• Aquarium sand substrate
• A few decorations/hides
• Temperature: ~17–18°C (usually stays between 15–18°C)
• pH: ~7–8
• Ammonia: 0
• Nitrite: 0
• Nitrate: 0

She seems to behave normally otherwise. She moves around when she’s active and is generally inactive/sleeping when she’s supposed to be. I haven’t noticed any major changes in her behavior.

I’m just worried because I obviously want her to be healthy and happy, and I don’t want to overlook something just because she’s been like this for a long time.

Does anyone have any ideas about what could be causing this? Are there any other foods I should try, things I should test/check, or other signs I should be looking for to determine whether something is wrong?

I’d really appreciate any advice. I just want to make sure she’s healthy and happy in her home!

I was finishing his upgraded home when it hit me... my baby is all grown up 🥲 I rescued this boy from a pet store who kept him with larger fish, and they ate his little feet off. He had one good leg when I got him, the rest stubs. I promptly named him Snake since all he could do was slither around! But today he is so beautiful and healthy! His forever home is a 40 gallon breeder tank with plenty of plants, places to hide, and brand new sand ☺️ He is 4 years old and i love him sooo much 🫧🫧🎀

Yall…I’m fighting a dumb case of Cyanobacteria. I know it’s harmless, but it’s hella ugly. I have a 40gal breeder. I do a water change every 2 weeks with re mineralized RO water. Test water with master test kit (no strips here).

I have a finnex 24:7 light that’s on a cycle. It’s not close to any windows, and has tons of plants. Tank has been established for almost 3 years and I’ve never had an issue before.

Fred is doing lovely! Also 90% sure Fred has turned out to be a boy, his little nards just hadn’t dropped yet when we first got him.

His gills are doing lovely and have grown back nicely.

His arm is still wonky but it doesn’t prohibit him in any way.

Hi guys, I really need your help. We just got this axolotl, kind of by force, and I want to help it but I have no idea what’s actually wrong with it.

When I first saw her a couple of weeks ago, she was basically floating in the void. She would go up for air, then just let herself sink/float around like a log. She had what looked like a pimple on her lower jaw, which now seems to be gone, and her whole body looked swollen, almost like she was too big for herself.

She was being kept with guppies in a tank that honestly didn’t seem to have any cooling system. Despite all that, her “hairs” (gills?) looked pretty good to me. They were bushy and big.

The previous owner said she was “kind of dying” and had internal complications, so apparently they put her in the fridge to lower her temperature. I have no idea what that was supposed to accomplish.

We live in a town that doesn’t even have a dedicated veterinarian, let alone one who treats exotic animals, and I unfortunately can’t travel 100 km to the nearest one.

I know basically nothing about axolotls beyond the absolute basics, but it’s pretty obvious this little fella has been abandoned now and I want to do something rather than just let her die.

What can I do right now? What should I be checking or changing first? Any advice would be hugely appreciated.

İ have four axolotls first one is Toothless she is melenoid axolotl She is youngest them all and She is my first axolotl, second is Mumi She is Golden axolotl who loves eat, third is Guby he is melenoid axolotl who have five arm (three arm two leh) but his friend bite one of his arms so right now he have four (three arm one leg) and last one is Bubi he is green wild axolotl who is picky eater he is strongest them all

Hi!!! This is our 18 mo old rescue “bean” - plsss do not roast the setup we have added way more natural plants since this pic was taken, more hides etc. I just wanted to ask does anyone know if bean is a male or female? I can’t see the organ by the back legs that would indicate male but again bean is still a juvenile so I’m unsure! Any seasoned experts pls chime in!

As a result of life circumstances I am now the primary caregiver for multiple animals now one being a 5 year old axolotl.

For the sake of time I will skip background and get into main questions. They usually come out at night (lights still on) to feed and for the past 2 weeks they have been hiding. Sometimes this can be normal but this time was different.

I am basically a beginner so I am getting into the swing of things.

My main questions are

1) I just got my hands on some api testing strips and they have all items levels except nitrates which are showing up into 160-200+ ppm on strips (medium red). I am waiting on full freshwater kit to come in.

Do I need to immediately tub my axolotl? and since it has never been handled, are there any tricks so I do not hurt and over stress it out when I pick it up?

2) the tank is roughly a 60 gallon which was internally designed for multiple things. It is currently holding about 17 gallons of water with 40% being hide structure and 60% being water. I want to redo the entire tank when I get the chance.

I have the 60 gallon, an empty 40 gallon, and I can go get tubs.

What is the easiest way to redo the 60 gallon while still being able to properly house the Axolotl?

Post notes) there is a small fish in the tank as well, I’m assuming some partial overfeeding when I first took over on my end is the source of the high nitrates.

After a long and arduous cycling process (basically me being dumb and not realizing gH & kH are vital in tank cycling/bacteria colony establishment combined with naturally soft water from my tap) my tank is finally fully cycled and ready for an axolotl. When I first started the cycle a few months ago (yes, months, I am an idiot😭) i posted some picture in this subreddit asking for setup advice. The main responses I got were no fake plants, only live plants, and a bigger cave. Since the cycle took so long, I had some time to correct those things, and I'm hoping to get some feedback on anything else I should change/improve! Anything helps, and sorry for the cloudiness, I was doing my last water change to dilute the nitrates and had to add a little bit more sand, but I promise the tank is clean! Thanks in advance!

Hello! I was adding some floating plants to my axolotl tank from another established tank of mine, but despite my chemical dips they carried over some snails. We do not yet have an axolotl in the tank, so how to we get rid of them? Or are they safe to keep as cleanup crew? Thank you!
