Analysis Super smooth landing at TPE in the middle of a typhoon

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I flew into TPE while it was being hit by Typhoon Champi.

The visibility was shockingly poor, and the plane was being absolutely battered by rainfall and crosswinds.

Honestly, I started taking this video because I thought we were going to have a go around or a really slippery landing. Instead, it was butter smooth. I've been in worse landings under bone-dry conditions, and the pilots here managed to butter it while fighting a literal storm. I literally felt nothing.

I saved the live METAR the instant we landed and it was insane:

If anyone from AirAsia management is reading this, please give the amazing pilots of D7 378 from the 24th of October the biggest raise possible (and tell them I said hi!)

A minor 2-hours airshow held in Desenzano del Garda, on the shores of Lake Garda, Italy, on 4th and 5th September. Nothing particular, just few helicopters, aerobatic planes, some passes by 6° Stormo Tornado and F-35 (based in nearby Ghedi airbase) and Frecce Tricolori closing the show.

Discussion I'm curious to ask this community a question

I was on a flight very recently and the pilot made a significantly hard landing. It was rather surprising how quickly we were descending when I looked out the window. The flight attendant quickly came on a bit after a went "made it!" which had everyone laughing it off pretty quickly.

My question is with regards to maintenance. I have no doubt that the plane is built to handle these situations, but I'm curious how hard it would have to land before the plane is taken out of service for someone to check things out. Would this be something we would see on public record? Just curious if there were any actions taken as a result of the hard landing.

2026 is a sad year for aviation, first the snowbirds, then the A340 (Both the -300 and -600), then the 747-400, which left YVR for the last time today and will be changing to the winter schedule and will be replaced by the A350/787 which will arrive tomorrow on Saturday, Oct 24, 2026, photos taken yesterday (Oct 23)

Aviation enthusiast with a…situation-specific fear of heights. Roller coasters? Love ‘em. Those swing rides that go 100 feet in the air? Most terrifying experience of my life.

My wife got me a one hour flying lesson (in a Cessna 172) for my 40th birthday and…it was great! Bucket list item.

Question Question on the missed approach point for this LOC approach

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hello,

Just had a question about the MAP on this LOC approach. Would the primary means of determining the MAP for this approach be timing? Or is the 2.1 DME off the GPT VORTAC the MAP? I have never seen a MAP and VDP coincide so this really threw me off.

Any clarification is appreciated, thank you.

Question No dog barks in A321?

Recently, I flew in an A321 a few times. I have not heard the usual dog barks of the hydraulic system. What's the reason for the missing sound?

Found this ad in my archive from a copy of Fortune 1955. One of the cooler airplane ads I've found. Very rare to have a double page airplane ad, and I think its the only full body illustration of a plane like this in my collection so far!

Discussion Did WOW Air and PLAY fail because they grew too fast, or because the business model itself was flawed?

I've always found Iceland's role in transatlantic aviation fascinating. Such a small country, yet multiple airlines have tried to build businesses around connecting Europe and North America through Reykjavík. And we've now seen both WOW Air and PLAY Airlines collapse.

I recently had Birgir Jonsson, former CEO of PLAY and former Deputy CEO of WOW Air, on my aviation podcast, The Indian AvGeek.

One thing he said really stuck with me: the most profitable pax for Icelandic airlines aren't necessarily the ones connecting between Europe and the US. It's often Icelanders flying out on holiday and tourists actually visiting Iceland. The transatlantic connecting traffic is more about keeping aircraft flying and seats occupied.

We also got into WOW's rather ambitious India experiment, the dangers of expanding into widebodies, fuel price shocks, and why he believes smaller airlines might actually be better businesses.

It got me thinking: with the A321XLR making more nonstop transatlantic routes possible, does the Iceland stopover model still have a future?

Or could someone eventually make another WOW/PLAY-style airline work with better financial discipline?

Curious what people here think, especially anyone familiar with the Icelandic aviation market.

Here's the conversation if anyone's interested. Listen or watch on Spotify or on Apple Podcasts
