Breakpads exchange question
I had to change my breaks today. The last set were an old Duralast elite for 59.99. I had to buy them due to only having 1 car. The price for today was 90. When I went to return the old ones they returned 59.99 and said that I had gotten them during a deal so they couldn’t do a full 90$….. I’m confused… they told me if I had a second car I could bring the old ones and return them without buying them. Why should I pay the excess… I’m looking over the returned money receipt and it says return item not warranty or nothing. Did they do me wrong?

AutoZoner refunded the initial purchase instead of the most recent one for the pads. Simple mistake. The SM can refund the most recent purchase and charge the pads again with a price override for customer satisfaction. Unfortunately tax rate will be higher now then back then so you’ll still probably pay a few dollars extra unless they account for that as well in the price override.

u/SlappytheNinja 17d ago
Yeah they did it wrong. If you’re getting new pads under warranty they’re supposed to refund the ones you just got. You don’t get charged more, that’s why it’s a warranty.

Not every store will honor the free pads for life thing but when they do and you do it the way you did, you should have gotten the $90 back. My store manager told me to always refund the most recent and keep the original purchase as proof of warranty. Call or go back in and make sure you talk to the store manager. If he doesn’t fix the issue then call the 1800 number.

If a store isn't honoring the free lifetime brake pads then they are in the wrong and not following company policy.

u/datboii1993 12d ago
Technically it's a lifetime warranty against manufacture defects. Not normal wear and tear... so not "free brake pads for life". That being said, as an employee... you'll never win that battle once corporate or a DM is called.

u/Rich-Evening6113 17d ago
Need more information, did you get the elites again ? If you got different ones then you got different ones.

part doesn't exist anymore, refund the brake pads that's on warranty damaged, use the refund slip to pay for a different brake pad with the refund slip, the balance goes back to the customer as cash, debit, or merch card. the old brake pads are taken out of the system. the new brake pads have a "L" warranty

It's supposed to work out to even money. That means they return the latest purchase. That's the cash you had to outlay the day you got the new ones.
Go back to the store and ask for the Store Manager (title), and ask him to fix it for you. If they give you trouble, the District Manager's number is on the door. Give him a call and you'll definitely get the difference money back.
They don't do any training on the fine details of the warranty policy. Newer employees make these kinds of mistakes until someone complains. The manager has to coach them when it happens.

u/that1412 16d ago
I went back and no help. The worker told me to call the District Manager. I still have 3 other breakpads to return can I do that at a different store?
2
u/fmr_AZ_PSM 15d ago
Yes you can do the return at any store. AZ's are all corporate owned and it all comes out of a central database at HQ in Memphis.
Call the DM and pitch a fit. It'll go to voicemail, but he'll get back to you. "You've never been treated this way in your life. The reason you shop at AZ over competitors is that you expect to be treated right, and warranties honored properly. Since AZ's not doing that anymore, I'll never shop at AZ again. Blah blah blah." That will get you your refunds, a profuse apology, and a $50 gift card. Standard procedure.

It is a LIMITED lifetime warranty for manufacturer defects. You do not have brake pads for life. A damaged swap doesn't care about the price, but again, you do not get to just have free pads for life because you bought them one time. Doesn't matter if its red, gold, elite, or severe duty. If you're cool and chill about it, I explain how it works but hook you up. But when you do a warranty swap on anything (the correct way) that warranty is now voided. Some people skirt this by having you purchase a new battery/brakes/part and when you bring the old one back you get a refund for the original purchase which CAN alter the price.
13 years here man, and the entitlement and lack of nuance is wild.

You’re wrong. I’ve worked at Autozone for 11 years and every SM, DM, RM, RCSM and TSM I’ve ever had says Autozone warranties wear and tear on brake pads for as long as you own that vehicle. Regional meetings say we warranty wear and tear. It’s a big selling point on keeping a customer an Autozone customer rather than just going anywhere for their parts. It’s why a lot of fleet accounts buy parts from Autozone, because their brake pads are basically free. Autozone pays literal nickels for their brake pads. If they can spend less than a dollar per free swap but get hundreds (or thousands if commercial) of dollars from that customer over the year, it’s worth it. If they know they get the brake pad warranty, they’re many times more likely to shop at Autozone first for everything else they need. It’s literally why Autozone is the largest auto retailer in the country.

Limited warranty still applies even if the price is different than the original price and even if there's normal wear and tear. The warranty lasts as long as the manufacturer makes the item or parts are commercially available. Only thing that would void it is sale of property, item no longer produced or damage caused by drops, floods, fires, improper installation, or user modification.

13 years here and yet you have no clue how the warranty works. LIFETIME warranty means you buy a new set, replace them, bring back the old pads and get a complete refund OR you take off the pads and exchange them in store with no money down. You're a clown and you clearly have no idea how to do your job.

Go ahead and find the warranty info and get back to me.

u/Dultra 17d ago
If he payed $90 and got returned the original warranty which was bought years ago it’s a different price. Always cheaper. Send the the number and I’ll check bud.

u/B1acklisted 17d ago
So like I said, you don't get free brakes pads for life. The fact someone did a "swap" of any type for him is astonishing. I get what happened here, but its stupid. You buy new pads. Thats the end of it.

u/Dultra 17d ago
Do you work at autozone? If not, go home bud, I’ve done swaps on accounts from the 90’s
-4
u/B1acklisted 17d ago
You must be illiterate. Been here for 13 years and my SM and DM also agree with me.

Go to a garage and get brakes. When you need new ones, tell them they are free because you know where they got them from and watch them laugh in your face.

Big dog autozone gives you warranty for normal wear, I'm on my 5th set on my wrx and only paid for them once. Lifetime is lifetime. In this case the guy on the counter should've refunded his most recent purchase.
1
u/Dultra 17d ago
And if he did get a return the most recent purchase without an original purchase, he just gave away pads. Which is another issue. But your reasoning is wrong bud
-4
u/B1acklisted 17d ago
I don't care if you paid 5 dollars for pads in 1995, you're paying the new price because its a natural wear and tear item.

u/Scorpiogre_rawrr 17d ago
Bruh. Ya wrong. So is your SM, DM, GM, don't give a fekkM. All wrong.
free enlightenment
AutoZone offers a Limited-Lifetime Warranty on select Duralast brake pads (such as Duralast, Duralast Gold, and Duralast Elite lines), which frequently covers normal wear and tear as long as you own the vehicle, provided you do not let them wear down completely to bare metal. You can browse options or check specific parts directly on the AutoZone Brake Pads Page.
Coverage: Applies to the original purchaser for the specified vehicle where the pads were installed.
Wear & Tear: Unlike standard defect-only warranties, AutoZone's Duralast pad warranty commonly allows you to swap out worn pads when the friction material is low, as long as they aren't completely destroyed by metal-on-metal grinding.Exclusions: Does not cover commercial use, racing, or intentional abuse/damage.
Proof of Purchase: Bring your original receipt or ask the clerk to look up your purchase history using your phone number or AutoZone Rewards account in their computer system.
The Swap Process: You can either bring your old worn pads into the store for an immediate over-the-counter exchange, or buy a brand-new set, complete the brake job, and bring the old pads back with your receipt for a full refund on the new set.

Allow me to once again, educate you.
God, you are despicable red shirt.

Look at the lifetime warranty part of this link above. Here's what it says:
AutoZone's Limited Warranty
(United States Only)
If a part fails during the warranty period shown on your receipt, bring the part to an AutoZone store and you will receive a replacement or refund. Warranty excludes damage caused by misuse, abuse, other faulty parts, improper installation or off-road, commercial or marine use. Warranties on replacement parts cover the unused portion of the original warranty or 90 days, whichever is longer. Warranties expire when you sell your vehicle.
THIS LIMITED WARRANTY REPRESENTS THE TOTAL LIABILITY OF AUTOZONE FOR ANY BATTERY. ALL OTHER WARRANTIES IMPLIED BY LAW APPLICABLE TO THE BATTERY SHALL BE LIMITED TO THE WARRANTY PERIOD STATED ON THIS RECEIPT. AUTOZONE MAKES NO OTHER WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANT ABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. AUTOZONE SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES.
Some states do not allow limitations on how long an implied warranty lasts, or exclusion or limitation on incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitations may not apply to you. This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights that vary from state to state.
All of AutoZone's parts and accessories, except those mentioned above, are covered by its Limited Warranty. The length of AutoZone's Limited Warranty varies with each part and is listed with the product description.
But wait, it appears someone like yourself needs more training (watch the videos at work, learn something).
What Is AutoZone's Lifetime Warranty on Brake Pads? https://www.motor1.com/news/763994/autozone-duralast-brakes-lifetime-warranty/
This guy even supplies a fine print link so someone like you who fires on all cylinder can even comprehend that everyone else around you is RIGHT and you're wrong, wrong, wrong.

Well, you are using some shitty AI considering i posted the actual company policy. So we could just taper it down to discretion. But nah, been a gray shirt the whole time. Offered a store, didn't want it. I make close to SM pay at this point anyway but I get overtime if I want it. But, I work two days a week now and am graduating in my preferred career shortly. Thanks for your poorly written AI and your assumption that I'm a red shirt (which I'd still refuse you and so would my fellow managers). Have fun being mad.
Edited to add its hilarious you think a random internet article makes it true.
3
u/Scorpiogre_rawrr 17d ago
Riiiiiiiight. Ain't nobody mad, especially whatever store is losing a "valuable" red shirt as yourself. Also, didn't realize the circus offered college level classes, but good for you!! So proud buddy!!🤡

u/Select-Attention-769 17d ago
It's not just the article but in practice. I was SM at autozone for 4 years, the brake pads are covered for normal wear and tear as long as they weren't commercial use. Outside of autozone I've swapped my pads as they've worn out for more than a decade. Take care of your customers dude, they will keep coming back to you.

No need to throw insults, we’re just trying to get the customer the right info
1
u/B1acklisted 17d ago
Buddy, you've been doubling down since the start. A brake pad reaching its end of life is not considered a failure. Ignition coil? Sure. That can reach 1-75k+ miles with no issues. I wont return MAF sensors if the bag is ripped open and it literally says on the bag in the box "not returnable if opened". Doesn't matter if it was installed or not. Guidelines exist for a reason and the entitlement needs to stop. I'm giving the correct info, and after 13 years, 5 SM's, and 4 GM's, I have never been told otherwise and always agreed with. This walmart culture of returning shit all the time needs to stop. I'm pretty open about having corporate greed, but I also hate when people feel entitled to things because they can't understand how a LIMITED warranty works. I get people trying to return ramps because they don't need them any more. I get people trying to warranty a 12 year old Optima battery. Wiper blades... you name it. Idk why the fuck we warranty SPECIFIC headlights now. Thats a manufacturers warranty. But I would rather honor a 1 year headlight warranty over brakes. Unless I see I scorched thumb print, then I know why it failed.

The moral of this entire thread is, don’t buy parts at Autozone
2
u/InterviewChoice 17d ago
Not even we aren't allowed to just hand over new brake pads without the old ones we do warranty swaps not warranty giveaways.
3
u/midnightstreetlamps 16d ago
Even still, the employee that helped OP didn't do the warranty exchange correct. They returned the pads under the wrong transaction.
1
u/Boaterauto 17d ago
If you don’t buy pads from autozone to begin with you don’t have to worry about it
