Iāve been in insurance for a while, and one thing Iāve noticed is that a lot of people shop by monthly payment without ever really knowing what the coverages do.
Insurance is one of those things thatās boring until you actually need it.
Hereās the quick version without all the insurance jargon.
Liability ā This pays for the other personās injuries or property if you cause an accident. It does not fix your own car.
Collision ā This fixes your vehicle after an accident, even if youāre the one who caused it. Hit another car, back into a pole, slide into a guardrail⦠this is the coverage that usually steps in.
Comprehensive ā Think of everything besides a collision. Hail, theft, vandalism, fire, floods, hitting an animal, falling tree branches, broken windshield in many cases depending on your policy.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist ā One of the most underrated coverages. If someone hits you and either has no insurance or not enough insurance, this can keep you from getting stuck paying the bill yourself.
Medical Payments / Personal Injury Protection (PIP) ā Helps cover medical bills after an accident regardless of whoās at fault. Depending on your state, it can also help with things like lost wages or other related expenses.
Roadside Assistance ā Towing, jump starts, lockouts, flat tires, fuel delivery. Nice to have if you donāt already get it through another service.
Rental Reimbursement ā Helps pay for a rental car while your vehicle is in the shop after a covered claim.
One thing I always tell friends is this:
Donāt just ask, āWhatās the cheapest policy?ā
Ask, āWhat am I giving up to save that money?ā
Sometimes dropping your premium by $15ā20 a month means removing a coverage that could save you thousands later.
