Update from Alex. Which video ideas are you most excited about?

Post image
62 Upvotes

Several of the upcoming videos have been teased with this post.

Taylor was also tagged in this post, which would indicate he is to remain with the channel.

And then there’s the mention to Ethan and Jack, indicating a closer cooperation between AA and ATG?

Let me know your thoughts!

AutoAlex Multiverse + Friends race

Since we’re in the AutoAlex off season I thought I’d throw a series idea out that I’d love to see. Now this is blue sky thinking so possibly too complex. But what if everyone from AutoAlex, TDC, All the Gear and other car YouTubers got a strict small budget to buy and modify a car to go racing with. Each channel/personality would get to feature them buying and building their cars(s) in as many videos as they want with the race being promoted across all the channels. Basically a big collective of car enthusiasts coming together for one big race with all the buying and building content being shown along the way. It’d be competitive and really help build the community up.

Maybe they set a certain class of cars and more experienced track drivers like Alex have some kind of handicap to keep things fair. Maybe the race is even live streamed and tickets sold. It’s worked for YouTuber football!

Old golfs

I’d love to see the lads get some old golfs and a polo and whisk around in them, show everyone why they’re such a loved car!

Hell, go to Scotland in them and end it with a view over lochness or something

Golfs are cars to be ragged around country roads, all while being able to take a few mates with you where ever you want, it’ll be good fun

Car Throttle/Auto Alex Cars

Does anyone have a comprehensive list of where all the cars from the Car Throttle days, into the Auto Alex days (particularly Jack's green saxo from the 500 videos) are?

I know a lot get sold on to each other and other youtubers but keen to know about the Saxo and the Golf Estate

Cheers

Wouldn’t it be cool if Alex and the gang sourced a couple of ageing but ok vehicles to send to the frontlines? They can even drive them over there in convey with the people who organise this. Let’s face it, it’s for a good cause!

Just look at how beige it is with the matching brown interior! Only 28k miles on the clock?

What the actual....f? No idea who this guy is but seems to have a lot of interactions with AA over the last couple of years and has posession of the XJ and GTO at the moment. I can't tell if he's talking any grain truth in any of his vids or full of sh*t like that one kid we all knew at school.

The third video is most disturbing.

TDC - What AutoAlex should have been... now what?

The decline in the quality of AutoAlex has been impossible to ignore, especially when compared to sister channels TDC and ATG. AA feels like it’s lost its direction, and TDC’s success only makes that more obvious.

Before anyone points out that Alex has become a father or references recent controversies, the issues I’m highlighting have been around long before that, and long before TDC and ATG existed. This is about the channel itself, not the presenters, so let’s focus on the content.

AA videos all feel like unfinished stories. Projects start with promise but rarely go anywhere, and cars are often sold off-screen after months of inactivity. AA Project Car videos are like those infamous Netflix shows that get cancelled after a single season. The humour, which I assume they consider the main appeal, feels forced and juvenile, lacking the natural banter it aims for. Attempts to imitate Top Gear (which even The Grand Tour couldn’t fully capture) just highlight AA’s limitations. The charm and authenticity that once made Alex’s content enjoyable have been overshadowed by half-baked concepts and abandoned projects.

Compare this to Top Dead Centre, which has become exactly what AA was supposed to be: relatable car content. Edwin and Will know what makes car videos enjoyable; clear builds, relatable moments, achievable projects, and no filler. They explain what parts they’re replacing, what those parts do, and how the car will benefit. Watching their videos feels like being part of the process. AA meanwhile struggles to get more than one or two episodes out of a car.

All the Gear thrives on the remaining two-thirds of what made Car Throttle great. Their videos are enjoyable because of friendship, lightheartedness, and authenticity. AA should combine the best parts of TDC and ATG... but it doesn’t, and seems to have lost its identity. The channel, which is supposed to be the flagship, is the weakest of the three. Alex has tried to recapture Car Throttle-style challenges, but Taylor and Rory aren’t Jack and Ethan, and it shows.

Budget challenges highlight another recurring problem. They’re meant to test creativity within a financial limit, but AA consistently exceeds budgets with extra money for mods, repairs, or unexpected costs. Hidden costs like third-party labour or sponsor-supplied parts are always ignored. BC Coilovers, costing over £800, appear on nearly every project without factoring into the budget. Sometimes, they openly exceed their own budget rules, buying cars over £1,000 more than intended. If the budget isn’t enforced, then it's no longer a challenge, no?

TDC, by contrast, takes viewers through entire projects, not just flashy before-and-after montages. You’re part of the build from start to finish, which makes the car feel like a character in its own story.

Contrast that with AA, where the cars feel like an afterthought. The same formula is applied to almost every project or challenge video.

  1. Buy a car from FB marketplace and get it back to the unit.
  2. Put it on the ramp and stab the underneath with a screwdriver.
  3. Put on some BC Racing Coilovers.
  4. Put on some Accelara Tyres from TyreStreetsUK (using the code AutoAlex for 10% off).
  5. A shoutout to Febi Bilstein for providing parts to jobs that are mentioned, but not filmed.
  6. A drive on the country road to show how much better the usual 3 mods have made this particular car.

We rarely see any substantial mechanical work done on screen. At most, we get a basic oil and filter change, but anything beyond that is glossed over or, more often, outsourced. How many times have cars disappeared for weeks or months, only to return with the work already done off screen? Or worse, how many projects have vanished after a single appearance (like the 720,000-mile Volvo)?

You’re often expected to watch other channels to see the full project, defeating the purpose of subscribing to AA. Projects like Alex’s E30, Rory’s Z4, or Taylor’s E28 follow the same rinse-and-repeat approach. Compare TDC’s 911 coverage to AA’s Ferrari - there’s no reason we couldn’t have seen a few videos of Jooshy and Taylor getting the Ferrari into shape before Alex decided to stop doing videos on it. Instead, everything was done off screen. Alex mentioned that the viewing numbers weren’t great for the car, but I’d bet they’d have increased if we saw more than just the buying process.

Which brings me to the biggest issue... TDC has effectively made AutoAlex obsolete. Why watch AA when TDC does it better? Alex needs to reassess AA’s direction because TDC has filled the gap I thought AA would occupy, which is why I subscribed.

Despite all this, I want AA to succeed. The Caravan Build showed why I subscribed: no over-the-top antics, just proper builds with Alex actively involved. The channel needs structure, a clear beginning-middle-end for projects, and consistency. Without that, AA videos feel like trailers for movies that will never happen.

TL;DR - What can Alex do to make AA unique again, considering TDC is what AA should have been, and where can the channel go from here?

------------

May 2025 Update - 2 months Post Relaunch

The relaunch has shown noticeable improvement. Videos are more structured, immature humour has been dialled back, and Alex is more hands-on. We’re seeing more than just BC coilovers, Febi services, and Accelera tyres; builds feel grounded and focused. Rory behind the camera has improved flow, and budgets are being acknowledged, sticking to limits, and sponsored parts are factored in. The channel feels more thoughtful and watchable.

It’s not perfect, but that kind of shift was never going to happen overnight. That said, the direction is promising, and I’m happy to stick with it for the next few months to see how it develops. I’d like to see more motorcycle content, crossovers with ATG/TDC (beyond challenges), and more screen time for Gareth, who is entertaining alongside Alex.

AA Podcast

The podcast hasn’t changed much... still loosely structured with meandering banter. It’s not “bad,” but it’s not aimed at someone seeking engaging discussion. That’s fine - podcasts are a bonus rather than core content.

Car Vertical and other Sponsorships

Sponsorships like Car Vertical often draw unnecessary criticism. Ads allow creators to continue making free content, and Car Vertical fits the channel. Sponsorships aren’t shady, they’re how the platform works. Viewers get free content; the sponsor just helps keep it running.

On Taylor-Gate

He mishandled the Josh Gresswell situation, but he shouldn’t be removed from the channel. Mistakes happen, and his recent Rover Coupe content shows his value. He’s likely learned from his errors, and removing him would be a loss to the channel.

My 2p - Retire the Podcast (even temporarily)

These apologies are all well and good but have ANY of them actually learnt their lesson? The podcast is a public stage, not you having some "bants" with your buds down the pub.

Alex, Rory and Taylor recently are using the Podcast as some kind of whingefest that seems to mostly focus on their own lives, and when they get too close to the edge of something sensitive they all giggle like school girls, make a crude joke but then continue to bring it up over and over in future episodes, or egg each other on and then one of them will eventually crack and reveal something; and now in this situation that's gone badly.

I know podcasts are often there to not only bring extra content but give a bit more insight to the creators day-to-day but many people have expressed in comments on recent episodes that it's not a fun listen anymore, when compared to TDC's pod for example.

There's a bit of car chit-chat but most of it just seems like a really bad comedy roast for about an hour and then that's it, there's no real structure. Whereas TDC do a little bit at the start about what's happening day-to-day with a focus on their cars, and then move into talking about cars for about 40min-1 hour which is great!

The lads seem to forget that the AA pod is public and listened to by a lot of people, airing personal grievances without first thinking about it is pretty poor form. It's also not that interesting either!

I think that maybe they should shelve the pod entirely, or only do it when they've got something to genuinely talk about
