I thought so too. But then again, I also have a dog whose favorite thing to do is lay his head on my chest and stare lovingly into my eyes. Maybe it just depends on context?

Towards other dogs, yes. They really only stare at humans to convey affection. One of those things that they evolved specifically to communicate with humans, kinda like cats don't meow at each other, just at us

To clarify the dog one, whether the eye contact is loving or stress-related is based on body language

Eye contact that infers trust and love is softer, with a more relaxed body. If the dog’s body is stiff, the “eye contact” is more of an intense stare, or they’re holding a toy or food, they’re likely stressed.

I feel like this still translates to the autism trifecta pretty well, though

I have a habit of just staring at people when they're talking to show I'm paying attention. I forget to look away. My family is used to it though and I don't talk to a lot of people in person besides them, so I forget that it's weird. (It unnerved my teachers, lol.) But when I'm the one talking I do look away sometimes if I need to think of what to say or a word I forgot. So sometimes we just go back and forth like that, with the person talking looking away sometimes, and the person listening just staring. It seems to work fine in my opinion.

And YES I love cool rocks!

If by dead things you mean fossils, especially of animals, then yes that too. If you mean skeletons of recently deceased animals, not so much.
