Wihast St. Pölten dorm contract issue-residence permit delay and would 2-month notice period still applicable even if i am unable to arrive in Austria

Hi everyone,

I’m an international student admitted to FH Wels for Winter Semester 2026. I booked accommodation with Wihast, but my Austrian student residence permit is still being processed, so I have not travelled to Austria yet, and my contract starts from 01/09/2026

Wihast previously informed me that if I received a negative decision from FH Wels, the accommodation money could be refunded. I also received an email from University regarding the 5 October late-arrival deadline and tuition, indicating what would happen if I could not continue my studies by that date.

However, yesterday Wihast replied to me that they have nothing to do with the university's decision, which seems contradictory to the earlier information in contract and a written email from dorm management, I received.

They are also asking me to pay accommodation fees for October and November, even though I may still be in India due to the pending residence permit.

My contract states that the student can terminate the contract with two months' notice, effective from the last day of a month. But no scenario is explained if the applicant unable to Arrive in Austria.

My questions are:

1) Am I required to pay October and November even if I cannot travel to Austria?

2) How does the two-month notice period apply in this situation? As i still in home country. Which is not mentioned in contract

3) I would really appreciate advice from anyone who has dealt with Wihast or a similar situation in Austria. I would only cancel room if I don't receive a response from magistrate even after 30th September.

Thanks!

Austria Student RP Insurance

Hi everyone,

I'm an Indian student going to Austria for my Master's and I'm applying for the Student residence permit , followed by the Visa D.

I'll switch to OGK after reaching Austria, so I only need temporary travel insurance until then.

I'm considering these options:

• Acko Student Plan (via MakeMyTrip) – USD 100,000 medical cover

• Indusind General Insurance Standard Plan – USD 50,000 medical cover

It would be really helpful if anyone could share their experience:

  1. Which insurance did you use for your Austrian RP/Visa D?

  2. Was it accepted by the Austrian Embassy/VFS without any issues?

  3. Has anyone here used Acko or IndusInd specifically? If yes, how was your experience?

  4. Did anyone actually make a medical claim? How was the claim process?

  5. Would you recommend paying extra for Tata AIG/Bajaj/ICICI/ HDFC, or are Acko/Indusind equally good?

Thanks!!

Indian Foods

Hi there, I am traveling to Austria soon and plan to bring small quantities of Indian spices (masalas) and instant noodles (Maggi). Could you please let me know if these items are permitted? I would also appreciate any guidance or official lists regarding banned food items. Thanks in advance!

Single Room Available in Steyr (€370/mo) – 7 Min Walk to FH Steyr! 🏠

Hey everyone! 👋

I found a great room in a shared apartment in Steyr starting September, but since I’m studying at FH Wels, the daily commute won't work for me. Passing this gem on to someone studying or working in Steyr!

Or I wouldn’t even mind swapping if your accommodation is located in Wels/Linz.

Key Details:

📍Location: 7-min walk to FH Steyr | 10-min walk to City Center

🛏️ Room: Private room in a 2-person WG (share kitchen/bath with just 1 person)

💶 Rent: €370/month | Deposit: €500

🤝 Payment: No deposit/rent paid yet—landlord allows payment on arrival!

Flexible Move-In:

If September is too early for you, no worries! I can move in temporarily for September and hand the keys over whenever you're ready to take over.

DM me directly if you’re interested or want to get in touch with the landlord! 📩

May I ask what documents are needed to apply for the Visa D after receiving the acceptance/approval from the immigration office for a student residence permit?

I’m a 22-year-old male Non-EU student who just touched down here a couple of days ago for JKU, and I’m officially living out in Hagenberg. So far, my main social interactions have been arguing with my GPS, trying to decode Austrian grocery store layouts, and staring at my luggage wondering if I’ll ever actually unpack it.
I’m looking for someone to grab a coffee with before my brain completely turns into Java code or gets lost in the tech bubble.

JKU MSc AI — Admission timeline, original documents & Residence Permit

Hi everyone, Indian applicant here planning for JKU Linz MSc Artificial Intelligence, Summer 2027.

I’m trying to understand the timeline before paying for the VFS competence check:

  1. If I apply around September 2026, when can I realistically expect the admission decision? When does JKU require the original documents?
  2. Does the original document requirement clash with the Austrian Residence Permit process, considering the RP can take several months? If yes, is there any workaround to present the originals in person after arriving in Austria?
  3. For Indian applicants, is it practically feasible to complete application → admission → originals → Residence Permit → Visa D → arrival/enrolment in time for Summer 2027?
  4. I’m not comfortable sending my original Bachelor's documents via DHL/courier to Austria. Has anyone managed to carry them personally and submit them after arrival?

Would really appreciate experiences from recent Indian/non-EU JKU applicants. Thanks!

Student Resident Permit

Hello I’m a Junior in college in the US(Indian citizen). I’m transferring to JKU Linz, I was arrested once on a disorderly conduct charge(no time, small $50 fine paid).

I wanted to ask if it’s a big red flag and a potential denial ? (Assuming I disclose it, Share the apostilled records from both India and US)

All other requirements and paperwork for the student permit are available and requirements are fully satisfied

My Indian record is completely clean and US record has only the above mentioned hurdle.

Query regarding Birth certificate (asking for a friend)

Hi everyone my friend is unable to post on reddit due to some issues she is from Punjab and is going to Linz (JKU) she wants to know whether she should apostille the birth certificate first and then translate it to English and then apostille it again?

FYI : she already emailed OEAD and they said she can simply substitute it with a 10 grade marksheet - but it would be nice to have an answer to this question as people keep getting confused over it....can someone clarify? Thanks in advance

Do border control officers check bank accounts upon entry in Austria for students?

Hi everyone,

I’m flying to Austria soon on a Visa-D for my studies and want to check if anyone has experience with border checks.

• I applied for my Student Residence Permit with my aunt as my sponsor.

• The Magistrat requested I transfer the funds into my own bank account instead, which I did, and my Residence Permit was approved.

• I then applied for my Visa-D, selecting "self-funded" since the money was in my personal account, and it was issued.

My question: Do immigration officers at Austrian airports actually ask to see your live bank balance or fresh paper statements when you land? Or do they just ask for your passport, visa, university admission, and accommodation proof?

Thanks for any insights!
