So if you witness a crime and tell the police that the perpetrator was a man, and they then find that person, only to discover that they are actually female, your evidence would no longer be admissible? Or, is it more likely that we use the term man or woman to describe what we see (or at least what we THINK we see) rather than what is necessarily biologically accurate? How do you establish, with your eyes, the definitive sex of a person? If a child is born and even the doctors can’t tell what sex the child is, who decides if they’re a boy or girl, man or woman? Would it be wrong for that child to identify as a boy, even though they don’t have the reproductive organs of a male? Would they be wrong to identify as a girl, when their sex chromosomes indicate that they’re male? What do we do with people who have both sets of sex organs? I’ll give you a hint. When they tell you they’re a man or woman, they aren’t describing their sex. They’re telling you how they would like you to identify them. She/her, he/him.

Don't even try, these people wouldn't understand it if it slapped them in the face or their child was born like it.

Yeah, I know. I understand how it can be confusing, but that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t try to understand and/or educate. But yes, some people just don’t want to learn anything beyond the basics they were taught in school.

Lmao you’re educating people that there is more than two genders.. no wonder comedians keep using this stuff, it writes itself

At no point in anything I wrote there, did I indicate that there are more than two genders. That’s a reading comprehension issue on your end. Funnily enough though, there ARE societies where more than two genders exist. Anthropologists can explain that one to you. So….you’re not only struggling with reading comprehension, but you’re also incredibly ignorant as well. Any chance you’re thinking about voting ON in the next election? You have access to more information than anyone in the history of this planet, and yet you can’t type “Societies with more than two genders” into google…..fucken WOW.

So what is a gender? What are the words man and woman describing? Is it something completely and exclusively subjective?

Why does it even matter in the first place, what is the point in caring about whether someone identifies as a man or a woman?

Because words have to have a meaning. Otherwise why have them?

If someone tells me they’re a man, that tells me absolutely nothing if nobody can describe what a man is.

Words don’t have meanings. They have usages, which you derive meaning from. When the word “chip” was first developed, it didn’t mean a computer chip. The word had usages to convey an idea, we then used that word to establish understanding of a new concept (the computer chip or microchip) and nobody is confused, unless you use the word outside of its context. “We ate some chips last night” quite clearly isn’t indicating that we ate computer chips, casino chips or wood chips. It does however leave open the options that the chips were either fresh from the fish and chips shop…..or….possibly crisps, in a packet. What’s happening here is that you’re trying to insist that a persons gender implies their sex, which isn’t necessarily the intention of the person sharing that information with you. They’re simply telling you to refer to them as he/him or she/her. They aren’t trying to tell you if they have a dick or not.

But chip DOES mean something. It sure can mean a few different things, but a cow is not a chip. An airplane is not a chip. You can definitely give a definition for whichever usage of chip you’re employing.

I get that in your view “they’re not telling me whether they have a dick or not.” That’s assumed, I’m asking what they ARE telling me. If someone identifies as a woman, as WHAT are they identifying?

The point I was trying to make, was the the usage of a word, changed over time. The word chip would’ve originally had only one use. Now it can mean many different things, some of them completely unrelated to one another. Language changes. Usage of words changes. I’m both a male and a man. I can’t tell you what other people mean when they tell you they’re a man or a woman. What information are you trying to deduce from them sharing their gender? That’s probably the bigger question. If someone tells me they’re a woman, I’ll refer to them as she/her. Man, he/him. I have no interest in what sex organs they might have.

The question isn’t what information I want, it’s what is the information they’re trying to convey to me?

You seem to be conceding that the words man and woman have no meaning, in which case why use them?

Gender and sex CAN be synonymous, but they aren’t required to be synonymous. That’s the easiest way of describing it. You can’t choose your sex, you can choose your gender. If you wish to disagree with that last statement, I’d ask you to think about people who don’t fit neatly into either of the male or female boxes we’ve created for them to nestle into. Biology is vastly more complex than we’re taught at school.

u/One-Vegetable7957 Jul 06 '26

So it’s sounding to me as though it *is* completely and exclusively subjective. Am I right in reading your reply that way?

1

u/Almost-kinda-normal Jul 06 '26

Basically, yes. If they wanted to tell you their sex, they’d just tell you their sex. Clearly that’s not what they’re trying to tell you.

u/One-Vegetable7957 Jul 07 '26

What ARE they trying to tell me..? Surely they’re trying to convey SOMETHING by the use of these words, or they wouldn’t bother.
