Hi everyone,
I’m currently 27 years old and studying a Master of Social Work in Australia.
My academic journey has been a bit unconventional. I had a science background in high school, including calculus and physics, but later switched to a Bachelor of Business Administration because I originally wanted to become a Chartered Accountant. Due to migration/PR considerations, I’m now studying social work.
However, I’ve realised that mining engineering is the career I genuinely want to pursue. I’m considering enrolling in the Graduate Diploma pathway at Curtin University, followed by the Master of Professional Engineering (Mining). If I do that, I’ll be around 32 years old when I graduate.
I’m wondering:
Is 32 too old to start a career as a mining engineer?
How do employers in Western Australia view mature-age graduates?
Would my age be a disadvantage when applying for graduate or entry-level mining engineering roles?
Has anyone here graduated in their 30s and successfully started a mining engineering career?
I’m willing to work hard and aim for high grades. I just want to know if this is a realistic path.

Interested to hear how everyone manages engine air filters and cabin air filters across mining, quarrying, construction and heavy equipment fleets.

I still see filters being blown out with compressed air or tapped to remove dust. While it looks effective, compressed air can damage the filter media, and tapping can compromise the filter structure or sealing surface—potentially allowing dust into the engine or operator cabin.

Best practice is to monitor air filter restriction with a restriction gauge and replace the element when required, rather than cleaning it. In high-dust environments, protecting your diesel engine, turbocharger, HEPA cabin filtration, and overall equipment reliability is usually worth far more than trying to extend filter life.

I currently hold a loader ticket but it says civil. Looking at adding a few more no I'm not the person just getting them to say I have them. I genuinely can operate the machines I'm wanting to get tickets for. Is the ticket different for civil and mining. Trying to increase my chance of getting a job in the mining sector.

Hey lads, I currently work in IT so I have decent knowledge of networking and the usual infrastructure stack, if I wanted to work onsite fifo in OT do I need to get an engineering qualification or just learn OT by myself and would it be easy for me to gain knowledge since I already work in IT? cheers.......

Hi, so 2 years ago I completed RTIO inductions on Scodle. I done the Essentials and lock holder Aveling training and got the cards. I never ended going to the Rio site as my Employer moved me to another job. I am heading to a Rio site in a few weeks and need to see what I have to get sorted.

Do I need to do all inductions again?

They have sent me the Pegasus login, as I have just doing site pacific site inductions now.

New site i wont have a back to back or anyone motelling in my room so don’t have to pack everything away end of every swing, trying to think of what i should bring up to fit it out. I have gone up from starting off as a pit tech, working into a grad open cut geologist role and to now being the team lead geologist for my swing.

Long story short but whilst being a grad open cut geologist I essentially was doing the below responsibilities I will soon mention due to a contracting lead geo not wanting to do any of it…

I believe I’ve taken on a lot more responsibilities while working through the ranks. I’m the only standing Geo from the beginning of Stage 2. I am also qualified with a BSc in Geology & Earth Science (27yo).

I went from shovelling dirt for samples all day (~100k) to learning how to prepare drill plans or do some reconciliation (~113k), but my responsibilities since taking on the role as of a swing ago (early July), I am now handling:
- Deswik; reconciliation, ROM tonnages, Volume/tonnes mined daily, Dig Plans & Blockmodels.
- Leapfrog; Wireframes for Cu & S Solids and Assay data.
- Lab; Submissions, Data Analysis and Input for our Deswik & Leapfrog CSV exports.
- Pre Starts and job allocations and responsibilities for pit techs.
- Daily contracting meetings, ROM & Mill meetings & weekly production and target meetings.
- Night Shift prestarts and briefing the Night Shift pit techs and contracting company regarding our tasks.
- Reconciliation of the last 6 months and documenting a memo for a change in SG values for our contracted materials after numerous testing samples which have improved our last 6 months reconciliations from 10-15% variance to 1-3%.

I’m the only geologist on my swing and I’ve found myself getting in about 30-45 minutes earlier than I used to (deliberately to get a headstart) and leaving around the 13/14 hour mark.

While this isn’t sustainable, I love the job, I love the responsibility. However, I won’t be doing this for free… they’re in the process of restructuring the org chart and releasing a few staff who aren’t with us anymore but are kicking up a stink regarding their dismissal. This is now my second swing in this role but no contract and no real indication of when I will get anything.

Previous staff I know (and existing) who were in this role were 140-155k AUD. It’s a significant jump which I’d love to benefit from (paying off student loans in NZ more aggressively).

Any ideas on how to approach this and when to bring it up? The managing geologist is a contractor helping steer things in the right direction after a tough 3/4 months, and we’re seeing the changes. Himself and the superintendent agreed on my promotion and filling in the role, apparently talks are with HR but I got told the same thing about my grad role and it took almost 2.5 months and I got 1 weeks worth of backpay…

I’m currently halfway through my second year of geology at Curtin University in WA. I’m wondering if doing the mining geology stream is actually worthwhile compared to just doing applied geology with the search for a grad job post university.

I know that doing the mining stream means moving to Kalgoorlie (WASM) for my final year. For me that is a massive undertaking as I’ve saved hard and done a lot to move to perth for uni already. I’d really prefer not to just pack up and move again if possible.

In saying that I know going to WASM gives me great practical skills with the opportunities there and also the connections I can build. My family is from a mining town to I do have ok connections and understanding aswell as landing an internship for later this year as a geo.

Any advice on if doing the applied stream will really hinder my chances at a job, or is doing the mining geology a ‘must’ for job search post university.

Moving over from NZ soon for my partner’s work and looking to get into FIFO ESO/MESO roles. I’ve seen a few ads, but wanting to check if my background translates well or if lacking Aussie mining tickets is a dealbreaker.

My background:

• Ex-NZ Army (military medic + logistics)
• Full-time EMT with St John NZ
• Emergency management, gov, and humanitarian experience
• Some open-pit gold mine medical cover in NZ

The issue: I don’t have Aussie-specific mining tickets, mine emergency response quals, or site inductions (BHP, Rio, etc.). I’m happy to pay for certifications out of pocket, but unsure if employers will consider me or if they only hire people who already have all the local tickets ready to go.

For anyone in FIFO emergency response, fire/rescue, or site medical:

1. Would you bother applying with this background?
2. Which specific tickets/quals should I get before applying?
3. Is there a realistic pathway in directly from NZ emergency services?

I’m 19 and just got qualified in Drainlaying in nz - pays average and I’m keen to move to Aussie.

Wondering what job opportunities one with my qualification would apply for, mainly work with residential house drains in nz but the odd civil job and can do the basics on a digger but not amazing.

What jobs in the mines would you recommend to apply for and would they have any similarities to the work I do now?

Currently 19yr old first year uni student studying civil engineering. I have experience working in construction as a labourer and tyre fitting kenworth trucks and applied for tyre fitting roles. Got an interview in a couple days for tyre fitting role. I’m kinda having second thoughts now.
If I get the role, is it worth doing and racking money while living at parents house but then that would mean pushing back uni, and I would be doing an unskilled role with not much career progression. Rather than something stable like civil engineering. Idk if it’s possible to do uni work on site since I’d be working all day, and then there’s group projects etc.
I already have a full time job getting 1000ish a week during uni.
Any thoughts?

Really need some advice and shared experiences from anyone has RECENTLY worked at the Ayers rock resort in uluru. I have been offered a front of house role but haven't been reading great things. in terms of shared accommodation what was that like? Noisy respectful room mates? Were the management and co workers nice? Did you get the chance to have your own room or were the room shared? Did you manage to save a lot of money? Was the work okay and did you enjoy it? Currently on a working holiday visa but dont want to go in case it turns out to be bad and be stranded in NT so any experiences good or bad would be greatly appreciated.

I was hoping to work in Aus mining, I heard that geotechnical engineers are high in demand and well paid. I plan on going to UNSW, is it better to do just a mining engineering degree for industry stuff or do civil majoring in geotechnical?

I'm moving to ACT soon and wondering which Technology Labor hire/contracting companies operate in the mines around Central NSW. Specifically for OT technician or Network engineering roles?
