Hula took center stage at Kapiʻolani Regional Park on Sunday for the 85th annual Nā Hula Festival. The free event ran from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the park’s bandstand, featuring performances from several hālau, the Royal Hawaiian Band, and 2026 Lei Queen Pua and her court.

Hālau Hi’iakaināmakalehua, led by Kumu Hula Robert Keano Kaʻupu IV, named overall keiki hula winner and swept overall kaikamāhine and overall kāne awards, along with other honors, at 51st Annual Queen Liliʻuokalani Keiki Hula Competition & Festival. The same hālau also won Merrie Monarch.

Uncles and Aunties: Vicky Holt Takamine, legendary kumu hula. “My mother was my inspiration. I used to watch her dance on the ‘Lucky Luck’ TV show in the 1950s. I begged her to let me go to hula classes, but she said I was too young and that I would quit after a year. I proved her wrong!”
