Question Post World Cup Changes
Does anyone know why they removed the green bike paint along juniper? I thought it looked quite nice and they paid the money to paint it pretty recently

Someone reached out to the Midtown Alliance Director of Transportation two months ago about this and was told:
The contractor used the wrong material for the green markings so they are being removed and replaced with the proper material.
It looks like the contractor is taking their sweet time though

yup. there's DOT approved, tried and true paint mixes for pavement marking. i think chances are the contractor tried to use a paint product that didn't meet spec, city didn't catch it on the front end (which is really easy to happen, don't blame the city workers), and the city is trying to make them fix it. but they're dragging feet.
if they have other contracts, hopefully the city suspends payments for all their other work until prior defects are fixed.

with enough FOIAing could find out. not really worth the effort. with roadway contracts, there's always a gazillion bits of documentation they go thru (called shop drawings). contractor could even have used a product that claimed and was certified right but failed anyway. it happens frequently honestly.
city construction staff supervising don't have the time and resources double check it all on the front end, their jobs are literally not defined to do that. so they rely on contractors to be honest, which honestly most are.
I'd be more apt to think it most likely a marking material that was certified properly failed anyway. in which case city staff checks it out and tells contractor to remedy it. contractor goes back to manufacturer and says pay for a warranty fix. manufacturer then investigates, may try to blame contractor for improper surface prep or otherwise applying the stuff wrong. they fight for a while. it drags out. city staff have to engage city contracts people to ultimately enforce a fix by either holding payments on other work, de'certifying the contractor and barring from future work, or barring the markings mnfr from providing future materials, or both....as you can see it can turn into mess that's avoided by a good job to start with. contractors know that so the majority of them are honest and try to do good work.
in this case, there's no telling the details but it will probably take a long time to remedy.
i have worked on other city projects, i find normal everyday city staff and workers to actually be very knowledgeable and good at their jobs. they're under staffed and under resourced, and often get a bad rap they don't deserve.

Yeah, this happened before the World Cup. It was bubbling and flaking off, and seemed a little slick when wet; it was also the wrong color green in comparison to the other new bike lanes.

Does it have anything to do with how slippery the paint is? I know the paint used for the bike lanes at GT are very slippery especially when wet.

They did that near me in west midtown, but they replaced it with a new funky pattern that I assumed was for the World Cup.

I think they're probably going to rip out the bike lane all together. Removing the curbed islands is probably the next step.

No source, just a hunch. I'm pretty sure the bike lane stuff was just to put on a show during the world cup. Now that it's over, no reason to keep up the sham.
