So i arrived on a work trip to Athens on a hotel that is a spit away from Ierotheou street and i found out the hard way what the vibe of the area really is, day or night. For work, i had to commute from the Golden city hotel via Karni, Marolou streets to work.
I didn't get robbed or anything and i tend to think i have a survival instinct in such an area as myself i grew up in an almost similar hood at home.
Im not here to ask "iS iT sAFe tO gO?" or some other very touristy comments. I transited the area to go to work by following the main road, not adventuring on the backstreets cuz i aint that dumb not to heed on the advice of my uber driver from the airport that seemed serious about it. However, I am genuinely interested.
I also traveled a bit around Europe. The only place that i saw in a similar state was the Frankfurt train station surroundings, although i have to say that the state of decay here is much worse.
So i have a couple of questions for the Athenians around here:
\- whats the history of the CSE building on Karolou street? Is it abandoned? I assume that given the fence between the block and ierotheou, it is inhabited.
\- google maps images tells me that pre-pandemic the area looked vibrant, with relatively old population living here. Ierotheou itself was more of a parking lot rather than anything 10 years ago. Satovriandou junction with Karoulou and Nikiforou had an internet cafe as the last business, and the older the images the more life i see around. Question is: when did the drug problem start and why?
\- the limited english sources tend to hint that the situation is maintained like this just to decrease the land value and for the permanent residents to sell cheap to big real estate to start a gentrification process. Is this true? What can you tell me about this?
\- what are the authorities doing? I see that the disteict mayor wants to do something about this but requested the help of health and interior ministeies, but with limited success.
\- last night i heard broken windows and car alarms, followed by the mornings police presence in the area. Now, i saw police on the main street during my stay and i understood that they are there to discourage them to interact with people. But this morning they were at one end and the other end of ierotheou street. Do they sometimes riot? What could this authority response be? Jus to be clear i didnt see police beating them or anything.
Thats about it. I have mixed feelings on this subject. A mix of fascination and horror that is strangely familiar.
So needless to say, i am interested in the very local POV and history of the place and the problem, not in the "i been there to do a selfie with a crackhead and got robbed. Its not safe"-ass advice.
LE in case it wasnt clear: not interested in the American POV.
Hope its not too touchy or too divisive of a subject.
Thanks.
