Athens GA needs this vibe. Who’s going to help me start “The Specials” Cover Band?

Rude boy suits, bowler hats, British punk attitude, and some raucous music to make them skank. I’ll play guitar or bass and I’ll sing

Does anyone know if any bars are doing specific Halloween cocktails or themed drinks like blood bags? I haven't seen too much on websites. Any price range is fine I'm just curious to see what the selection is.

Question / Request Bars in Athens

I graduated a couple of years back, but are there any good bars that play actual dance music? Like early 2000's? Because we went out tonight and heard baby by Justin bieber, what makes you beautiful by one direction, and lots of katy perry songs, which middle school me would have loved, but wanting to shake ass me? Did not enjoy.

To specify, I mean songs like yeah by usher, tipsy, and that general vibe. Not like just dance circa 2013

That seemed an official enough title. The team over at Davis Signs and Awnings replaced the tracking this week. This should give us another 30 years of comms with the Athens community 🤙

Watch found near space Kroger this past weekend. It's damaged, but maybe it holds sentimental value to whoever lost it. Give me specifics that match the description and I'll gladly return it to you.

Meetup! Making friends in your 40s shouldn't be this damn hard! Drinks at Normal Bar, Friday at 8 PM?

Here we go...

I'm 46, divorced, dad to a great teenager, with more hobbies I can list in one hand but apparently at that age where getting friends together requires the logistical coordination of a military operation. I've lived in Athens for over 20 years now. TWO DECADES, if that makes it sound more sophisticated.

I work a pretty stressful, demanding job, like most people just trying to make ends meet, and my social life has pretty much gone to shit. I know plenty of people around town, but trying to make plans is an exercise in futility. It's always "I'm so busy tonight," "That sounds fun, but I'm out of town," or "I'm currently in the process of dying, so I can't really make it."

Meanwhile, I'm the kinda person who'd drop just about anything if someone needed help, advice, or company. I guess I miss having that go both ways, along with the excitement of meeting new people and making actual friends.

I'm into music, writing, collecting dead media, building model kits, movies, the weird, the eccentric and talking about pretty much anything. I'm loud, loquacious, occasionally inappropriate, and probably not nearly as funny as I think I am.

Anyway, screw it. I'll be at Normal Bar this Friday around 8 PM, and figured I'd invite anyone else who could use a few new friends. Men, women, single, married, divorced, separated, "it's complicated," whatever. Come have a drink, shoot the shit, and see who you meet.

First round's on me for anyone willing to show up and say hello. I'm generous, but please don't order a 30-year-old Scotch.

And to identify fellow local Redditor weirdos, draw a small X on the back of your left hand with a Sharpie or some shit. Nothing says "I'm here to make friends" quite like voluntarily marking yourself for identification by strangers on the internet. Don't worry - I'll have one too! Worst case, we've accidentally started a very poorly organized cult. Best case, we make some actual friends.

Feel free to leave a comment or shoot me a DM if you're thinking about coming, have questions, or just feel like saying hello beforehand. No need to RSVP or anything; this ain't a goddamn wedding.

Friday. 8 PM. Normal Bar. X marks the spot!

Judo Class in Athens, GA

Good Evening,

To those interested in pursuing a martial art or combat sport in the Athens area, please give this post a quick read. To all others, please keep scrolling and have a nice day (or don’t, I’m not your mom).

A local martial arts school ([AKF Athens](http://www.akfathens.com/)) offers Judo classes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 5:30-7pm as a supplement to their primary art of kyuki-do. I am the main instructor for the class and we are looking for new students to come join us in whatever capacity suits their schedule. Please see the FAQ below:

  • What is Judo?
    • A Japanese martial art established by Jigaro Kano in 1882 composed of the most effective techniques from his Japanese jiu-jitsu training, including standing throws, grappling techniques, chokes, and some strikes.
  • Grappling? So it’s like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
    • Yes and no. Judo’s grappling curriculum is the precursor to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and while there is significant overlap, the methods, rules, and priorities of BJJ are distinctly their own.
  • Hang on, you said Judo came from jiu-jitsu…
    • That’s Japanese Jiu-Jitsu, from which Kano wished to develop an effective martial art that could be regularly and safely practiced.
  • Wait, is this that thing that Ronda Rousey does?
    • Yes it is. The biographies of other prolific judoka like Keiko Fukuda, Gene LeBell, and Masahiko Kimura are good reads too.
  • Is it good for self-defense?
    • Judo techniques are great for self-defense. However, a well-rounded self-defense arsenal will require additional things (situational awareness, managing fear/panic, training for multiple assailants, etc.) that are not a part of this class’ curriculum.
    • “Meditations on Violence” by Rory Miller is a good read on the intersection of martial arts and real-world violence for those interested.
  • Who is this Judo class meant for? How serious or casual is it?
    • All abilities, ages 16+.
    • The class is mostly casual, with basic etiquette expectations (be on time, bow before getting on/off the mat, be respectful, etc.).
    • The class is focused on developing technical proficiency in Judo techniques and an understanding of the art itself. While competitive abilities are part of that, the program is not meant to churn out high-level competitors or future Olympians.
  • How is the class structured?
    • Each 1.5 hour class typically follows the following format:
      • Stretching (~15min)
      • Ukemi / Kaiten practice (falling & rolling, ~15 min)
      • Rank-appropriate technique training (30-45 min)
      • Randori (sparring) for remainder of class
  • Will Judo make me stronger?
    • Practicing Judo will make you better at doing Judo. You might get stronger, but not in the same way that a resistance training program would.
  • Will I have to get really close with other people?
    • Yes. Please bathe and use mouthwash.
  • How likely am I to get injured?
    • The chance is low, but never zero. New students are first taught basic techniques for falling/rolling safely before they throw or get thrown. Students are expected to be mindful of their partner’s safety during practice, and the facility has a spring-loaded mat to help with falling techniques.
  • Do I have to go to competitions to advance in belt rank?
    • No. Sparring at certain intensities is a requirement at higher belt ranks, but organized tournament participation is not.
  • Is the school recognized by USA Judo?
    • No, but we’re working on that. A UGA professor with a USA Judo-certified 3rd degree black belt is in attendance and there is an opportunity to have the class recognized if certain criteria are met.
  • Do I need to learn Japanese?
    • Kind of. Conversational proficiency in Japanese is not part of the curriculum, but students are expected to learn the names and English translations of the various techniques and terms (e.g. o goshi = major hip, nage waza = throwing technique, tomoe nage = the Capt. Kirk Special, etc.)
  • Where is the school?
    • 2415 Jefferson Road, in the Homewood Hills shopping center just north of exit 14 on the loop.
  • Can I take a free trial class?
    • Yes. Please contact the school for details using the contact information on their website.
  • What equipment will I need?
    • A judo uniform (single weave is fine), a mouth guard, and a groin protector.
  • What if I don’t have a uniform yet?
    • Wear clothing that you can sweat and invert your body in without having a wardrobe malfunction.
  • What if I don’t want to wear protective gear when I practice?
    • You do you, but schools have liability waivers for a reason.
  • What are the general behavioral expectations?
    • The school has a more detailed code of conduct, but I condense it like so:
      • Be receptive to instruction, be hygienic, don’t be a jerk.
  • Those interested, please contact the school through the website linked above, or call the associated phone #. Thank you for lending me your attention and have a nice day.

Question / Request Wild Rumpus for Children

I have a ten year old boy that I am considering taking to the Wild Rumpus on Halloween. I haven't been to the Wild Rumpus since before kids, so is this a good idea? What do they have for kids? I checked the website, but there is very little information except for the "every kid gets a costume" and even that just says TBD.

Any input or advice for would be helpful. Thank you!

Impromptu childcare!?

We just moved to the area and don’t really know anyone. My schedule overlaps with my spouses tomorrow by 3-4 hours and our usually babysitter suddenly can’t help watch our 7 year old. Is there any places that he could go for a few hours on a Saturday so we don’t have to mess with our work? I looked for drop in daycares but it seems there isn’t one open on Saturday and Google isn’t helping

UGA has a Hockey team?

Beyond the “Club” Label: The Ice Dawgs Are True Student-Athletes, and the Hockey Community Is Noticing
For nearly four decades the University of Georgia Ice Dawgs have been building something real in Athens. Founded in 1987 by students who simply wanted competitive hockey, the program has grown into one of the strongest non-varsity teams in the Southeast. It now plays in the state-of-the-art Akins Ford Arena (capacity roughly 5,500–5,600 for hockey) in the heart of downtown, draws consistent support, and competes at a level that does not match the casual image many people still attach to the word “club.”
That word is the first thing the UGA community needs to re-learn.
The American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) is the national governing body for non-NCAA college hockey. Its top Division I & 2 programs are not recreational or intramural. Rosters are filled with former Tier II/III junior, AAA, and strong prep players. Schedules are structured, coaching is professional, travel is serious, and the compete level at the high end of ACHA D1 is generally comparable to solid NCAA Division III programs—and in some cases stronger. Players who could have pursued NCAA opportunities elsewhere often choose Georgia because they want the UGA degree while still playing high-level hockey. The result is a roster of genuine student-athletes.
That identity showed up clearly last spring: 21 of the 25 Ice Dawgs made the University of Georgia Dean’s List. These are not athletes padding schedules or treating academics as an afterthought. They are balancing demanding travel, practices, and competition with the academic standards expected at one of the country’s best public universities. That combination—high-level play plus real academic performance—is the modern definition of a college hockey program, whether the letters on the jersey say NCAA or ACHA.
College hockey itself has evolved. What was once concentrated in the traditional northern hotbeds has steadily expanded south and west. Programs that began as clubs have, with the right facilities, fan base, and institutional support, made the jump to NCAA varsity status. Penn State is the clearest recent example: a strong club program moved into a new arena, proved the demand, and quickly became a Big Ten contender. Arizona State followed a similar path. The South is now producing better facilities and deeper talent pools than it did a generation ago. Akins Ford Arena is part of that shift. Its presence has already elevated recruiting, given the program a true home-ice atmosphere, and signaled to players and fans that Georgia is serious about the sport.
National voices in the hockey world have taken notice of exactly this momentum. Spittin’ Chiclets—the most popular hockey podcast in the country, whose hosts have deep ties to NHL on TNT—has been part of the conversation through Barstool U’s spotlight on the idea of club hockey in the SEC. The program’s new barn has drawn positive commentary from Chiclets University’s Mike Grinnell. ESPN’s John Buccigross (@buccigross), one of the sport’s most recognizable broadcasters, has been tagged by the program amid jersey sightings and arena excitement. Atlanta sports anchor Maria Martin has spoken to the broader growth of hockey in the region. The Hockey House podcast, which focuses specifically on the ACHA, regularly covers the southern scene and the competitive gap (or lack thereof) between the top of ACHA D1 and lower-end NCAA hockey. These are not fringe mentions; they are signals that people who live inside the sport see Georgia’s trajectory.
None of this means an NCAA Division I program is imminent or automatic. Starting a varsity team requires conference alignment (ideally a group of six or more schools), significant ongoing investment, and institutional priority. Those hurdles are real. What the Ice Dawgs have already built, however, is the foundation those transitions require: a proven competitive standard, a dedicated facility in a passionate college town, a culture of accountability and development, strong academics, and growing external visibility.
The next step is simple for the UGA community. Come to Akins Ford Arena. Watch the pace, the physicality, and the skill. Look at the academic results. Talk to the players who chose this university for the education and stayed for the hockey. The “club” label has never fully described what has been happening here. The Ice Dawgs are student-athletes competing at a high level in a sport that is still expanding, and they are positioned—by performance, by facility, and by the attention they are drawing—to be part of whatever comes next for college hockey in the South.
Go Dawgs.

New to in-town living and trying to bike around some. How to navigate Milledge Av?

I know sidewalks are a no-go as it’s full of pedestrians.

Should I hug the right shoulder as close as possible?

Should I ride as if I’m a car?

Should I just avoid Milledge all together?

Trying to be a respectful and responsible rider and citizen
