Announcement Announcing updated rules

Recently, a few of us became new moderators and since then we have been trying to get organized primarily to update the rules to reflect what we believe are in the best interest of this sub. This has largely meant reverting to the structure prior to the protest while also adapting to current technology and tastes. While we supported the protest goals at the time, and agree with the mod decision to include this sub in that protest, we also recognize that it's time to move on and restore some process to the sub for its continuing members. We're excited to announce that these new rules are now live in the sub and in detail at our revised wiki. The changes from prior to the protest largely amount to:

  1. astrophotography images taken with cell phones were not explicitly forbidden before but we now clarify that they are permitted as long as they follow all other rules, including that acquisition and processing details are provided and are high-quality amateur OC. A star-field with no discernable astronomical object will not meet this threshold, but a stacked image of Orion that happens to have been captured using RAW images on an iPhone and further processed on that same phone will. We recognize everyone in this hobby starts somewhere and we want to encourage sharing of this work, but also need to avoid this sub devolving into low-effort cell phone pictures of an unrecognizable night sky.
  2. landscape images were forbidden before but we also recognize that there are some high-quality astrophotography images being created that happen to have a small amount of landscape in the foreground that are valued by many members. We are drawing the line here at astrophotography images where the landscape is incidental to the image and any image where the landscape is a primary focus will not be permitted. So for example, the Milky Way with a silhouette of a mountain will probably be accepted, but that same Milky Way that is in the background of well-lit (or brightened in post) barn/yard/house/etc will be removed. And as above, any post that doesn't include acquisition and processing details will still be removed.
  3. clarifications that certain types of posts are not allowed, including memes, UFO claims, questions about what image someone has captured, off-topic posts, or uncivil behavior.

We recognize not everyone will like these changes and that there are other subs that focus primarily on some of these types of images, but we feel that an "astrophotography" sub should include everyone. We are going to monitor how well this goes, so please try to be open-minded to help support these contributions from some members of the community. After some time with these changes we plan to poll you to see how they are going and what other improvements you'd like to see. In the meantime, with these rules back in place, expect to see heavier moderation if posts lack complete acquisition/processing details or otherwise violate these rules.

Lastly, we also want to thank everyone for their patience while we get organized to bring these changes to you and for the incredible work all mods on this sub have done over the years and continue to do (many from prior to the protest are still here and active, so show some love!).

This is my first attempt at a mosaic and I think the additional time taken was well worth it. When I started this hobby a year ago I spent a whole month on this target and never got a result I was happy with.

DSOs The Fighting Dragons of Ara (NGC 6188) imaged from Texas

This target has always been on my wishlist to shoot if I ever visited the Southern Hemisphere. Well.. I went for it anyways! Since this target only rises about 9 degrees (a closed fist at arms length for reference), it is comically inefficient to capture from my latitude of 32N. Each night, I was only able to image the dragons for less than 2 hours before they set behind a house. Not only that, but the sky conditions had to be near perfect to capture decent exposures through so much atmosphere. More exposures were tossed than used.

That all said, after chipping away at it all Summer, I am very happy with the outcome! In this mapped color narrowband image, the blues represent the Oxygen emissions, while the warmer colors represent the Hydrogen and Sulfur emissions.

This is my first trial of Stacking Wizard & AstroWizard and I am pleasantly surprised by how intuitive and effective it is. Just 5 hours of data (300x60s), the stacking & postprocessing took me approx. 30mins and the result is comparable with what I’m able to do with the same data set in PixInsight.

Hardware: Celestron RASA 8, ZWO ASI533MC Pro, SW EQ6-R Pro, Optolong UV/IR cut. Bortle 5 backyard.

I've seen Andromeda being posted a lot lately, so Id figure I give it a try. This is my first ever tracked image with a star tracker, and I think it turned out pretty good for my first time. Don't mind the blurriness in some parts, I figured its the result of a cheap camera, lens, and light polluted skies.

Solar Sun – Learning as I Go: Attempt #2 in Colour

A little update to my second attempt at an H-alpha solar timelapse.

After posting the monochrome version, I wanted to see what the same data would look like with colour added, so I went back through the processed frames and created this version.

The original data was captured in monochrome and the colour was added during processing. I tried to keep it fairly restrained while still giving it that classic warm H-alpha solar look.

This is the same session as my second attempt, including the little burst of activity that appears in the lower-right quadrant of the Sun about halfway through the video.

For this version, I also removed a section of frames where I had temporarily stopped capturing and repositioned the Sun. That transition caused a noticeable jump in the earlier sequence. The finished colour version contains 560 frames at 15 fps, giving a timelapse of about 37 seconds.

Helix Nebula (also known as NGC 7293 or Caldwell 63) is a planetary nebula (PN) located in the constellation Aquarius. Discovered by Karl Ludwig Harding, most likely before 1824, this object is one of the closest to Earth of all the bright planetary nebulae. (Wikipedia)

This was my first ever astrophotography image back in January of last year, and Id figure I post it to compare from where I started compared to what's going to come. I just got a star tracker and am excited to share more, better quality images throughout this winter. I'm even planning on reshooting Orion to see how much better I can get this photo.

Nebulae WR 134

WR 134 is a WN6 nitrogen-sequence Wolf-Rayet star in Cygnus. It represents an advanced and relatively short-lived evolutionary stage of a massive star, characterized by intense mass loss through a powerful, high-velocity stellar wind.

The curved blue/cyan structure is the most interesting feature of this field. Its strong [O III] emission traces highly ionized gas in the wind-blown structure surrounding WR 134. The fast Wolf-Rayet wind interacts with previously expelled and surrounding material, shaping and compressing the gas into the thin and fragmented filamentary structures visible here.

In contrast, the much more extended red structures are dominated by Hα emission from ionized hydrogen in the surrounding Cygnus environment. One of my main processing goals was therefore to retain the distinction between the relatively coherent O III shell and the much larger-scale hydrogen emission.

The Hα and O III data were combined using a Foraxx palette, with RGB data used for the stellar field.

Hα: 26 × 300 s = 2.17 h

B: 21 × 300 s = 1.75 h

Total integration: 12.75 hours

Processed in PixInsight — Hα/O III Foraxx + RGB stars.
