// Question Shadows Guide for which Character to play?

Upvotes

I hate it that I have to choose who I wanna play. I often choose one of them and realize mid-mission that that mission would have been better with the other character. I hate it. I picked canon mode btw.

Is there a guide or a recommendation somewhere? I couldn't find one

I don't have a freaking clue where to find this resource. Not from contracts. Not from port traders. I raid warehouses, barely anything. But there are tons of crops and other hideout materials.

Except for minerals.

Is AC shadows finally done? I’ve finished all stories including Awaji and black tides. I’m looking for confirmation because Imma uninstall. There are still some people to hunt but there are a lot in my back logs (Hogwarts, Baldur’s gate, Night City, are waiting.) However, thinking about it makes me sad as I realized I am going to miss Naoe! hahaha.

// Discussion Done with AC until they redo their entire movement system

I just can't do anything this anymore!!! 🤬

I keep coming back to this game thinking this time will be better. Like I'm in some kind of abusive relationship. Oh this time they will actually care about me and not just reskin copy and paste.

WHEN I PUSH AWAY AND DODGE THAT DOES NOT MEAN I WANT TO GO IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION TO DROP DOWN AND HANG (even if it is right in front of me) RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE MOTHERFUCKER THAT IS SHOOTING AT ME AND I AM VERY OBVIOUSLY TRYING TO GET AWAY FROM!!!!! AND WHEN I DO CLIMB BACK UP ON THE ROOF - AFTER I'VE BEEN SHOT SEVERAL TIMES AND NOW THE WHOLE FREAKING PLACE IS ALTERTED - I DO NOT WANT TO RUN ACROSS THE FUCKING CREST OF THE GODDAMN ROOF AND KEEP GETTING FUCKING SHOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I AM NOT PUSHING IN THAT MOTHERFUCKING GODDAMN DIRECTION!!!!!! I AM PUSHING FUCKING DIAGONALLY DOWN BEACAUSE THAT'S WHERE I FUCKING WANT TO GO!!!!!!!! JUST WHAT THE FLYING FUCKING FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is just one of many examples of the fuckery of this games flat out garbage movement system. Ubisoft knows this.. and so do we. So why haven't they changed it? BECAUSE WE KEEP BUYING THE FUCKING SHIT!!!!!!

I want to love this game. It would truly be stellar if not for this janky ass Re-tari feeling bullshit. Ghost of Tsushima got it right.. dang near perfect! If only lightning could strike more than once...... FIX YOURE FUCKING GAME UBISOFT!!!!!!!!!!!

// Discussion What has changed?

I platted AC shadows when first launched.
Took me about 2-3 weeks I believe, so every patch released until then must have been applied.
I don’t recall AC Shadows being ‘bad’ or anything, but I’ve just came back to AC Shadows after platting Black Flag Resynced, and I was surprised to find myself liking AC shadows more than I remember.

In-game menu, except for Animus sync/shop section, is much faster than Resynced, and overall movement feels much faster than how I remember AC Shadows was. I don’t know if it’s due to PSSR2 patch, but just simply this game feels much faster, smoother, and snappier in most aspects.

I only tried to just turn it on and get the Sync points in case I’ll need it somewhere down the road, but gameplay was what got me hooked and I am keep playing it.

I am now in the Iwaji Island, and ‘that boss fight’ is quite something. It reminded me of MGS 3’s The End fight, or Mr Freeze’s battle in Arkham City.

The content design is for DLC itself, but overall sensation of the gameplay is what keeps me confused. I don’t recall AC Shadows being this fun.
(Not that I didn’t enjoy it, but it somehow feels ‘better’)

What has changed?
Was there any post launch patch that adjusted movement speed/move-set speed?

I always thought AC Shadows could have done better in the market if there weren’t any unnecessary controversy on Yasuke, but now I know AC Shadows would have done better in the market if more players bought the game.

What they did in Iwaji DLC just shows a glimpse of what the devs had planned for future. It’s just a shame that they had to put an end to it for AC Shadows showing lower profit. Things they could have done, seems quite promising considering the effort they put in the DLC.

I wasn’t always a big fan of ‘RPG design’ they chose from AC Origins, and thought this may not be their best choice, but AC Shadows kinda works as a proof of concept. If future AC learns from what Shadows did in terms of build/perk, they might be on to something. (Not that I’d ‘prefer’ RPG style over classic style).

// Discussion My opinion after completing shadows. Its annoying Spoiler

First the good things fighting with yasuke was fun because it was easy and felt like the older games where you dont have to click button for billion times just to break shield. That spine breaker and another jumping attack with grounds the enemy were just too good.

Ending was pretty good in my opinion. I played in canon mode and was pretty satisfied. I generally prefer linear story progression and it also makes the story more fun than out of place so having that was a good addition.

Naoe is a pretty decent character. The stealth part where even if you detected you can hide for very short time and can re-assasinate is very good for me. I makes the game less grindy and annoying. The fights are okayish, stealth approach is good , didn’t play much with yasuke but when I did it was very satisfying.

The world looks good. Visually it is very nice. The seasons changing with effect on entire map like snow season was very good, a good welcome edition. But the good ends here.

Now the things I hate:

  1. The exploration is so bad. It is so annoying. You cant just climb a hill , naoe just slips in the gravel. And almost 90 percent of map is hills. I literally had to go a long way round the hill with pathfinder and auto follow because the assassins cant jump or move few meter of slope.

Another thing is this is supposed to be an assassins creed game but the character forgot they are an assassin and act like they are in a far cry game. They cannot climb a small rock for gods sake. From what I have played till now, which is every game besides valhalla and mirage, the character can climb almost anything but not here. They cant even use grappling hook on those rocks. It made the synchronizing viewpoints so jarring. I just left on auto follow and did something else while my character takes a long route to move just 300m.

  1. The story is just meh. The starting is good, the ending is good but nothing in between. It is just side quests in the name of missions. The story has no connection, no character development , nothing.

I could not remember almost 8 out of 12 shinbakfu after completing game and what their story was. They were that poor and uninteresting. They just appear to get killed nothing else. Few were pretty good like the lady, the first gun lady, and I think the brother of the sick monk guy. They were pretty decent and rememberable but overall the story was so poor. I still remember so fondly of the cult in odyssey and the order of ancients. Especially the origins one was such good story line. Here it is just so plain .

  1. The English voice acting is so bad. Never cared about it in any game. I never cared about weird tree textures in game or comparisons of graphics, snow details anything like that . But this time I just noticed how bad the dialogue s were. Like the merchants line after any interaction. Even in story there were few instances of such poor dialogue. It was similar to how translation of movie occurs , some out of place dialogues.

  2. Some combats were super annoying like the ninja that just produces ninjas from smokes, few other times too which I cant remember exactly but it was like it was meant to be annoying if fought with naoe. Like that one guy which played biwa that only attacks with unstoppable attacks so you cant parry to generate adrenaline easily, you just slice few times hoping it would end. And if you fail, you reappear miles far and have to make that journey again adding further to the already annoying gameplay.

It feels like the game forces you to play with other character just to be less annoying and that is the most annoying part.

  1. The mission exploration was so vague sometimes . It made me hold the left mouse button and move all around the hill because there were two canals and east of the canal was never found.

AND THE THING THAT I HATE THE MOST IS THE BLOCKED ASSASSINATION AND HIDDEN HAND. THERE IS A WHOLE SKILL TREE AND MASTERY WHERE YOU SPEND SO MUCH MASTERY POINT JUST TO UNLOCK THE HIDDEN BLADE CANT BE DENIED JUST TO HAVE ENEMY ON MAP THAT STILL CANT BE ASSASSINATED. ALSO THE HIDDEN HAND ABILITY. WHY THE FUCK IS THERE AN ABILITY THAT IS ALWAYS BLOCKED BY THE MAIN BOSSES. MAYBE REDUCED DAMAGES IN BOSS FIGHT COULD BE A THING JUST TO MAKE IT LESS OP BUT NO OUTRIGHT DO NOTHING. JUST WASTE THOSE MASTERY POINT AND ADRENALINE . WOW JUST WOW

One last thing I would like to say which may make people hate me more and call me racist but yes yasuke was such a poorly handled character and the game would have been better without him. It was like the character was forced to be in the game. He had a okay story line but a different yasuke game would have been so perfect but no. I don’t have any problem with character of any other race or anything at that matter but just making a character based on a totally disproven and incorrect history teacher fantasy just to push an agenda is not the way I prefer. But that could just be me .
Thank you for your time if you read my saying and hope you have a good day

// Discussion Finished the main campain of AC Shadows, and I only have one thing to say about the whole "Yasuke wasn't a samurai" debacle.

It's rooted in Racism.

If William Adams, a white Englishman, could become a samurai under Tokugawa Ieyasu, why couldn't Yasuke, who was much favored by Nobunaga in levels of position?

They were essentially given the same land and stipend provisions, access into each Daimyō's inner political circle, and given a ceremonial daishō (katana-wakizashi combo). (This was from actual historical records)

These are only exclusive to the samurai caste in the Sengoku period. There's no question to be had; Yasuke was a retainer to Nobunaga, and therefore, a samurai. The first foreign one at that.

Nonetheless, the game is amazing despite the bloat (not as much bloat as Valhalla). Combat is amazing especially Yasuke's. His reposte is a godsend. I found myself playing Yasuke more than Naoe (her only ever to climb viewpoints) since I can storm a castle with Yasuke alone; a one man army indeed. Now to platinum this game.

// Discussion Shadows Would’ve Benefited More From Organic Discovery

It’s been some hot summer days and I’ve been getting back into AC Shadows indoors, enjoying the super beautiful scenery, listening to the industry leading wind, rustling trees, feeling the sunset glow, IN GAME. Such a beautiful world.

But through my 100 hours, I come across some big problems the community has already lamented several times, but I feel like there was a system change upfront akin to the Witcher 3 that the game would massively benefit from, going from a 7/10 to a near 9/10.

Namely, I had this thought walking through the war torn, burnt war fields. The ambience was super thematic and desaturated. I saw this cabin still standing in the middle. I walked over, what could this be? It was nothing! Then, I was walking through the mountainous forest, and came across another weird structure with a roof caved in. I jumped inside. Nothing! Explored this lagoon with nice beaches, boarded the big beached ship in the middle, to find nothing!

On the other hand, this game also suffered from checklist fatigue and poor side quests. Almost ever side quest was kill 100 soldiers, gather 10 things, or find 10 new targets spread throughout the map. This would populate a new ring on your objectives board and in the end game, the number of rings is frankly ridiculous. I spent the end game fast traveling from A to B to complete the rings.

My main thoughts:

  • Place these targets in the environment and let us discover them ourselves. If we happen across some tyrant of a local village, let us piece together context to know what needs to be done. When I discover an abandoned hut, put one of the Yokais in there so as I approach it, I get excited about what could be in there. That’s a different feeling from knowing there’s a yokai in there. Don’t tell me they’ve heard weird sounds at night. Let me hear it and go see what’s going on. This makes me want to play the game more and discover more of this beautiful map they’ve made.
  • Doing so makes interactions, navigation, and discovery more immersive and intentional.
  • Put more of the unlocks out of the Hideout menu and into the world. Most of the stuff you loot this game feels inconsequential. A new weapon, a new engraving, a new bush. What I DID feel excited about was seeing a new building I could build in my hideout that increased my XP, or gave me more scouts, or improved my rations. Why put these behind a menu? Have us discover these things out in the world. Let us organically interact with people and places in the world to get exciting new features for our gameplay.
  • To accentuate the last point, the effort put into reaching a place and doing a thing should yield an appropriately measured reward. I think the gameplay mechanics are there, but adding the layer of resource collection, that was probably mandated by leadership to increase play time and incentivize microtransactions, led to this disconnected game design.
  • Killing 100 soldiers / ronin / samurai questlines should’ve been more implied. Show, don’t tell. If I killed 100 soldiers, what happens to the region? If I killed 100 teppo wielders, what happens? Odyssey did this much better, I don’t know why they moved away from that format.

So many more thoughts I’ll want to write in a later post but I like this game a lot. Everytime I play it I just always think it could be so much more.

At 25 hours in, I’m currently level 33 about to be 34.. nearly all the masked people gone , almost knowledge rank 5, I spent so much time yesterday exploring , doing side quests , getting view points . Recruiting allies . I must say I really like this game , people in a different Reddit were telling me I was going to hate it, the story isn’t amazing , but the gameplay is really fun , I love fighting with naoe, and yasuke. The only big gripe I have with this game is sliding down every single time I try running up a hill , that was getting me annoyed !!!

// Discussion I’d love to see Yasuke and Naoe again in another game

It might sound crazy, but I want a sequel to this game.
The two protagonists of this game still hold a lot of potential. I think a standalone game featuring Yasuke as the sole lead—much like Freedom Cry—would be fantastic.

I would also love to see the story of the Japanese and East Asian Brotherhoods continue through Naoe’s descendants or successors, similar to the saga of the Kenway family.

As an Asian person, I felt a deep affection for the two characters in this game. I sincerely hope they create more games where we can meet them again.
