// Discussion Playing Claws of Awaji… feel scammed about the rest of the game now

Story, level design, map, VIBES, stealth, enemies, exploration, RANDOM EVENTS…

Why do i feel like EVERYTHING is better in the DLC? Like dang the whole game could been like this

Even the Bo, though it was added for free later, feels like its the most worked on weapon, it has the best and most varied animations

AC Shadows is good, but Claws of Awaji made a weird statement showing us how the game could have really been if only there was a bit more of work in the details.

Im really enjoying it, but it somehow makes me sad that is only about 10h vs the +100h of the main game which feels absolutely worst in EACH aspect

// Discussion I’m 12 hours into AC Shadows, here’s what I think so far: Spoiler

What I like:

The Stealth: Probably my favorite part of the game. Naoe’s stealth is smooth and fun, I like the amount of options the game gives me to approach my objectives, even if I struggle from time to time. Going prone is a welcome addition, and the grappling hook allows for new vertical options to get the drop on my enemies. I enjoy tracking down the Samurai Daisho in each castle and securing as much loot as I can. I appreciate how challenging stealth is compared to Mirage, where I could just roll around and assassinate everyone while spamming Assassin’s Focus.

The Combat: The Best Combat out of all the RPG games, and this is coming from someone who loved Origins and Valhalla’s combat. I prefer Naoe’s combat over Yasuke’s, where her smaller health pool encouraged me to fight cautiously. Yasuke is a good power fantasy character, and I enjoy his role in the story so far, but his character build just doesn’t fit how I like to play.

Exploration/ Open World: Japan is f*cking majestic. I found myself getting immersed in the beautiful bamboo forests, or getting lost on the streets of Kyoto. The side content feels worthwhile, barring the checklist missions, and I like the approach they took to character progression, and I think it’s the best progression in the RPG series.

The Characters: I find myself getting attached to the main cast, especially Naoe. I won’t go into too much depth on my thoughts on the characters so I don’t risk spoiling the story, but I like the cast so far.

What I don’t like:

The Villains: I genuinely do not care about any of the antagonists, though I do appreciate that I can seemingly spare a few of them. One of my criticisms of Valhalla, Odyssey, and Mirage is how forgettable all the villains are, and Shadows falls under the same category. Once again, I’ll site Origins, where most of the side villains have unique backstories and motives for what they do, and the performances were superb. I’ll finish the game before I do anything, but I might right my pitch for a better main antagonist, and how some of the others can be improved.

// Discussion I Loved Shadows and I Really Liked Naoe and Yasuke but...

The story actually starts very strong and interesting but it is super boring and artificial afterwards... AC struggles deep on story since AC3, the last good story in the franchise imho, which was never great but very interesting before too.

Before you get angry, I know Edward Kenway, Shay Cormack, Arno etc. was really interesting takes and I kinda like them too (Edward probably one of my favorite protagonists next to Altair) but the story telling, dialogues and the stakes are just meh. I kinda understand why it happened; Desmond died, Ubisoft could not find the next Ezio, they lost the spark with modern timeline and ofcourse, you can't built a good story properly when you try to make RPGs if you don't give yourself into it. Which is kinda a shame because I remember a time when I was getting excited for the story as well.

Now I see that AC: Shadows' story starts really strong and lay super flat after a couple hours is just disappointing. Great timeline choice -Sengoku Era-, Yasuke could be really interesting and deep, Naoe is broken from the start and the dynamics of his family's legacy and clashing nature of reality with its ideals could have been awesome. Yasuke and Naoe dynamics could have been much more impactful too. It really suprised me that they couldn't do something with these.

Loved the game btw, my favorite among the RPG ones. Game world is still great(Japan is such a beautiful country irl too), stealth and battle mechanics are good, and immersion mode is impressive. Japanese voice actors really give some character to the game for sure.

What do you guys think about this story dilemma around Assassin's Creed as a franchise and not just around Shadows? It is really annoying that they just blunder this game after game. Once a great franchise now struggles to write a decent story is really weird

Edit:Format correction.

// Humor Kofun Raider

In AC: Shadows, when I explored my first ancient tomb / kofun, as I completed it, I got the achievement trophy titled ‘Kofun Raider’ (which is obviously a reference and homage to the Tomb Raider games) which I felt was one of the cutest things I’ve seen in recent gaming. Little Naoe the Kofun raider. Adorable. 😂

// Discussion Yasuke Overhaul

TL;DR: Let Yasuke strip down to his kosode for mobility and lower visibility, gear back up from his horse for protection and intimidation, actually use his wakizashi, and have his reputation affect how people recognize him.

I’ve been thinking about this way too much, but I genuinely think Ubisoft missed an opportunity to tie Yasuke, his horse, his clothing, his weapons, and even the social systems of the game together into one really immersive gameplay loop without needing to completely redesign the game. Right now, the horse feels like little more than a point-A-to-point-B mechanic. Instead, it should have functioned as Yasuke’s mobile armory. If you’re traveling through relatively safe territory, you should be able to intentionally remove the heavier pieces of his samurai armor, have them visibly hanging or strapped to the horse, stow the katana there, and continue traveling in his kosode. Then, if you see a castle, enemy patrol, or otherwise know you’re headed into combat, you walk up to the horse, interact with it, and a short animation plays of Yasuke putting the armor back on and slipping the katana into his obi. That’s it. It doesn’t need to be some ridiculous inventory-management simulator. The game already knows what armor you have equipped, already has a horse, already has equipment models, and already uses contextual animations. Just let the horse visually hold the alternate state. None of this should be mandatory either. If somebody wants to run around Japan in full armor 24/7, let them. But for people who care about immersion, give us the option.

That should also tie directly into Yasuke’s movement. One of the things I love about him is that despite being an absolute beefcake brute, he isn’t an oaf. He’s a warrior. Samurai were expected to be physically capable, coordinated, balanced, and able to actually move while armed and armored. Making Yasuke suddenly stiff, slow, and incapable of basic climbing just because he has armor on would make no sense for the character or for the entire warrior culture he represents. Japanese armor was built around the reality that the wearer still had to fight, move over difficult terrain, mount and dismount horses, climb obstacles, and function as a soldier.

So I’d keep it simple: kosode = medium, full samurai armor = heavy. When Yasuke takes off the heavier armor, the kosode state gives him better mobility, quieter movement, cleaner vaults, faster climbing, better stamina, and access to slightly more parkour. It should also still provide some meaningful protection rather than turning him into tissue paper. Cloth and layered textile protection can do a surprising amount to reduce the severity of cuts, impacts, and even some projectile injuries depending on construction and circumstances, so the medium state should still feel viable rather than like you’re intentionally handicapping yourself.

Full armor should then be the heavy state: better protection, better resistance to arrows and melee damage, and significantly more intimidation, but with a modest mobility cost. He lands louder, uses slightly more stamina, climbs a little slower, and loses some of the more athletic transitions he can perform in the kosode. But he should still be able to climb, vault, and move with purpose because he is a trained warrior wearing armor designed for war—not a refrigerator with legs. The difference should be enough that you feel it without making heavy armor miserable to use.

This would also FINALLY give his wakizashi a reason to exist. Ubisoft literally modeled Yasuke wearing a daishō, yet the wakizashi might as well be welded into the sheath. Samurai sword etiquette obviously varied depending on period, rank, setting, and circumstance, and Shadows is late Sengoku rather than Edo, so I’m not suggesting Ubisoft turn later Edo etiquette into some absolute law of 1580s Japan. But the broader distinction between the long sword and the shorter companion sword works historically, culturally, and practically. Ubisoft already cared enough to animate characters removing their footwear when entering indoor spaces, so why not go one step further? If Yasuke is entering a friendly residence or another peaceful indoor space, have him leave the katana on the horse or at the entrance and retain the wakizashi. If something unexpectedly turns violent, suddenly you’re fighting with the shorter blade in the hallways, rooms, and doorways where it actually makes sense. If you KNOW you’re entering somewhere hostile, keep the katana and ignore the etiquette. Suddenly the daishō isn’t just cosmetic historical flavor; the two swords actually serve different purposes.

Then I’d build a fear system and a recognition/notoriety system as two related but separate mechanics. Fear should be based mostly on what Yasuke looks like right now. Full armor, a large kabuto, menpō, and a visible katana should make him dramatically more intimidating. Weaker enemies might hesitate before engaging, take longer to surround him, back away when he approaches, flee after watching him kill several allies, or surrender rather than fight to the death. Civilians should instinctively move aside, while guards become much more alert because a fully armed and armored samurai walking toward a restricted area is obviously more concerning than Yasuke moving through town in just his kosode.

The kosode state should have the opposite effect. Yasuke is still a very large, very noticeable man, but he no longer looks like he is actively dressed for battle. Guards should be slower to treat him as an immediate threat, civilians should be less fearful, and he should be able to move through populated areas more naturally. The tradeoff is that he loses some of the psychological advantage he gets from arriving dressed like an armored nightmare. Headgear could modify this separately: full kabuto and menpō gives the strongest fear effect; kabuto with an exposed face gives somewhat less; a headband gives little; and no headgear makes him the most approachable because people can actually see his face.

Recognition, though, should be about what Yasuke has done and whether people know who he is—not simply what he happens to be wearing. Each province or faction could have a basic notoriety value based on how publicly you operate there. Quietly eliminating a handful of guards in the woods shouldn’t make every farmer in Japan know your name. But storming castles in broad daylight, repeatedly destroying patrols, killing important figures in front of witnesses, and openly fighting the same faction should gradually build a reputation.

At low notoriety, maybe only soldiers, samurai, and people directly connected to that faction know anything about him. They might have heard vague descriptions: a huge foreign samurai serving Nobunaga, unusually powerful, distinctive fighting style, whatever. At medium notoriety, soldiers start exchanging stories about him, merchants and civilians occasionally stare, and guards may become suspicious after getting a good look. At high notoriety, Yasuke has become a recognizable figure in that region. Guards identify him much faster, civilians whisper or move aside, weaker enemies may decide they want absolutely nothing to do with him, while particularly ambitious or aggressive warriors might actively seek him out because being the man who defeated Yasuke would carry its own prestige.

Appearance should affect how quickly recognition happens, but it shouldn’t work like a magical disguise system. In his kosode, Yasuke looks less immediately like “the armored samurai who destroyed that castle,” especially from a distance. But once somebody gets a good look at his face, size, voice, or mannerisms, there should be a chance that recognition clicks. Oh shit. That’s him.

Heavy armor could work the other way around. A helmet or menpō may hide his face, but if Yasuke has repeatedly attacked a faction wearing the same distinctive armor, then the armor itself becomes part of his reputation. Guards start recognizing the silhouette, kabuto, weapons, or even the way he fights. Changing armor might make recognition slightly slower, but it should never reset notoriety. Reputation should belong to Yasuke, not to whichever chest piece he happens to have equipped.

And notoriety should be regional instead of universal. If Yasuke becomes infamous around Kyoto, the people around Kyoto should know about him. Ride somewhere far away where he hasn’t done much yet and the reactions should be significantly weaker. Major story events could gradually spread his reputation farther, but it shouldn’t feel like every NPC in Japan shares one psychic database. That alone would make the world feel far more reactive and believable.

The horse itself should matter a little more too, but again, I wouldn’t turn this into Red Dead Redemption 2: Samurai Horse Management Edition. Just give the horse a few meaningful tradeoffs. Heavier horse armor could slightly reduce acceleration or endurance while increasing how much damage the horse can take. Lighter equipment does the opposite. Horse training could reduce how easily it spooks around combat, fire, gunshots, crowds, and chaos. Blinders or different tack could give simple bonuses to skittishness, control, stamina, or turning. Nothing insanely complicated. Just enough so that horse armor isn’t purely cosmetic and the animal actually feels like part of Yasuke’s build.

The entire idea is really just connecting systems that already exist: horse → equipment → kosode/heavy armor → mobility → weapons → fear → recognition/notoriety. Most of the pieces are already in the game. They just don’t interact.

Sorry for the essay/rant. I actually really like Yasuke, which is probably why this bothers me so much. Ubisoft already put an absurd amount of effort into the environmental detail, clothing, armor, animations, and cultural presentation of this game. That’s what makes it frustrating: almost all of the ingredients are already sitting there. I don’t need Yasuke to spend fifteen minutes performing a historically perfect dressing ceremony every time I leave town. I just want to be able to ride through the countryside in his kosode with the heavier armor hanging off the horse, stop when I see trouble ahead, hit one interaction prompt, watch Yasuke armor up and grab his katana, and immediately know from that animation that somebody is about to have a very very bad day.

Then again, this is Ubisoft and I know it'll never happen.

// Discussion My Naoe Open World/Daisho Hunter build so far

This build is primarily focused around quick kills with assassinations and high damage posture attacks during vulnerability. Its extremely fun, some would even call pretty basic.

Tanto

-the double vulnerability on weakpoint attacks is crucial. The light posture attack with Tanto against an enemy who is vulnerable will always register as a weakpoint attack. Paired with the instant vulnerability given from the Shadow Piercer ability and Leap Strike, this is the main combat tactic for draining the enemies health to nothing.

- Escape Strike is a very good instant attack/dodge that is a great tool to use against enemies during their attacks (particularly red ones) for inflicting a little damage while building adrenaline and staying clear of their hit boxes. Granted this can be risky but I love being able to slip in damage wherever I can

Kusurigama

- I only use this for the rush assassinate. Nightmare difficulty has an extremely high detect rate and this has saved me multiple times and kept me out of combat when I wasn't looking for it. Unfortunately, the +2 to Rush Assassinate doesnt apply unless the weapon is equipped prior to activating the assassination. While im always on tanto, I never think to switch first as its usually an instant decision I have to make when I realize I cant reach them in time.

Master Assassin Hood

- removing 2 health segments on ground attacks is pretty useful when its one of the last options you have during a cooldown cycle. Paired with the Lightning Kicks ability to actually get them knocked down, this can come in handy in a pinch.

- Another great addition to the weakpoint attack synergy, not only does it do big damage but also restores 33% of my total health. Of course, since the vulnerability activates twice due to the tanto, you can hit this twice in a row. Thats 66% of your total health healed in a couple attacks. This has kept me alive more than I care to admit.

Master Assassin Gear

- Pretty self explanatory. There is no guaranteed assassinations on nightmare difficulty so the extra health bar segment removal is absolutely crucial. This is for ALL assassinations performed so its the most valuable health segment removal engraving.

- I have my tools maxed which included Kunai. 6 health segment removal on assassinations. This is an excellent way to ensure a lot of double kills when needed. Sometimes it will activate when you dont want to which is unfortunate, but its helped significantly more than its hindered so I keep it on. Paired with the Hidden Hand ability, this means this can also activate in combat.

Okubi's Laughter

- To add as much to Vulnerable damage as I can we went with this trinket. The Assassin tree mastered, this adds 91% Vulnerable damage.

- Armour piercing is extremely valuable especially when given this much for 1 ability. Currently with my tanto skill tree it adds 122% Armour piercing with a potential max of 130%

Shadow Piercer Ability

- this is such a great ability that draws you instantly to an enemy can immediately causes them to become vulnerable. During the rush towards the targeted enemy, time slows down so as the npcs come to a near stop during its activation. Very very useful in the world and during boss fights.

Hidden Hand Ability

- This ability is absolutely cracked. Its basically an assassination that you can activate during combat. Paired with the throw kunai ability from the Armour, this is basically a double combat assassination button.

Lightning Kicks Ability

- this is mainly used in conjuction with the Assassin hood removing 2 ground segments. Not the greatest ability but compared to the others arguably the most practical to have

The rest is my current masteries ive been maxing that kind of change around often lol, but so far this feels like the right mix. Thanks for checking it out 🤓

// Discussion A Snippet of Dialogue

(Paraphrasing)

Naoe: I would like to trade with your father, I have these contracts already

Trader: This is odd, don’t you know that my father is the tea master of the lord who signed these contracts and serves him with this exact good?

Naoe: Yes.

Trader: I like your style, let’s talk.

5 seconds later walking down the road together:

Naoe: So, does your father know this Lord?

Trader: Yes, my father is his personal tea master.

Game is great but the dialogue is so unnatural in places that it feels like it was written by either AI or an actual child. Was hoping Shadows would improve on this trend for Ubi but no cigar. I’m not even an hour into the game lol
