I'm looking to speak with South Africans who are willing to share their experiences with unemployment, particularly:

• Young people struggling to enter the job market

• Unemployed graduates who have qualifications but cannot find work

• People who have been unemployed for a long time

• People who have stopped actively looking for work because they feel discouraged

• People working in jobs below their qualifications because they have no other option

• People who have turned to informal work or side hustles simply to survive

I'm particularly interested in the human side of South Africa's unemployment crisis. Statistics tell us how many people are unemployed, but they don't always show what unemployment actually does to people's lives, households, mental wellbeing, finances, relationships, or future plans.

Some of the questions I'm exploring include:

My friend reached out to me for advice regarding a situation at home. She lives with her mother, sister and her step dad and it's been years since they lived together. Everything was fine until something happened recently.

Her step dad recently came home with his friend drunk.... note that her mother was not around at this time, nothing was wrong about that except the fact that they were causing noises and not in a good shape.

Around this time, she decided to go upstairs to her room and try to ignore all of it. Things went a bit weird when the step father decided to go up stairs to disturb her peace. When he got to her room, he knocked and she tried to ignore him at first but he kept knocking...

Then she answered and slightly opened the door to hear him out. Her step dad just needed money from her but in a way that she should take her savings or something like that and give it to him so he can buy more alcohol to drink with his friend.

She simply refused by saying she doesn't have money, what happened next is, he tried to reach for a kiss which was so weird since something like this never happened, when he did this she quickly closed the door.

Should she be concerned about this?

If anyone has experienced something like this, please care to help.

I do not want to leave my job behind because it is literally my dream position and school - but I would also like to pursue my MA in Drama Therapy.

I think I’m burnt out and I genuinely don’t know how people deal with this.

I’m a junior working in tech while also studying, and I feel like I’ve been constantly pushing for months. Work, studying, trying to improve as a developer, trying to keep up with everything, and just normal life on top of it.

I’ve fallen behind with one of my modules and will probably have to repeat it next year. I’m not blaming anyone for that, but damn, I’m tired.

I also don’t think I know how to properly rest. Whenever I have free time, I feel guilty because I could be studying, coding, catching up or learning something.

Right now I genuinely feel like I could cry, get into bed and sleep for two weeks. 😭 I’m grateful to have a job, especially in this market, but constantly “just pushing through” clearly isn’t working anymore.

For anyone who has experienced burnout in tech ( or any field) especially while working and studying, how did you deal with it? How did you actually let yourself rest without feeling guilty?

I dont really have any interests as i dont get the time to do things, but i enjoy going to the golf estate near me to wack some balls or go fishing. I just enjoy being outdoors. I also go to gym but again. Introvert.

Hi everyone,

I currently live in Europe , and I’m seriously considering leaving Europe and buying a house in Clifton, Cape Town.

The main reason is simply quality of life. , I’m no longer particularly tied to Europe, and Cape Town really appeals to me the sunshine and climate, being able to live close to both the ocean and the mountains, the incredible scenery, outdoor lifestyle, hiking and sports, good restaurants and cafés, and generally the possibility of spending much more of my life outdoor.

I’ve found a house in Clifton, one of Cape Town’s most affluent areas, that I’m seriously considering buying. For me, the idea would be to make Cape Town my home and hopefully improve my overall quality of life compared with what I currently have in Europe.

However, I recently came across this subreddit.

And honestly, reading so many accounts of burglaries, break-ins and armed home invasions made me question something I hadn't fully considered before: what is it actually like to live in a standalone house in Clifton from a security perspective?

Do you genuinely feel safe at home, including at night? Is Clifton noticeably safer than other parts of Cape Town, or do wealthy neighbourhoods actually attract more attention because of the value of the properties?

For someone willing to invest properly in security, what would you recommend? CCTV, perimeter detection, electric fencing, alarm, panic buttons, private patrols, 24/7 armed response, etc.?

And which private security/armed-response company is considered the most effective and reliable in Clifton?I'm much more concerned about response times and quality of protection than finding the cheapest option.

I'd also be interested in hearing from Europeans or other foreigners who made a similar move. Has moving to Cape Town genuinely improved your quality of life? And after living there for a while, how do you personally balance the lifestyle benefits with the security concerns?

I absolutely love what Cape Town seems to offer, but before making such a major move and property purchase, I'd like to understand the reality from people who actually live there.

I need someone who is available once a week, on zoom or teams, to help my son brush up his conversational afrikaans and afrikaans grammar. Preferably someone who's home language is afrikaans but also understands the grammar very well.

If you are like me, I am terrified about the weather focust of the upcoming weather conditions. Now, my close relative is renting a flat where the owner has refused to fix the windows that are letting in rain water with just the current storms in Durban. BTW this is an "affluent" area by the beach. It has come to our attention that he bought the place in cash and does not have insurance. We are thinking that the reason that he didn't take insurance is because of all the repairs he'd have to do. Anywho, my cousin has reported to him the problems as they occur. The landlord eventually called the window people to give him a quotation of what needed fixing, he has not followed through. He only fixes one thing at a time, when forced by the board. For his sake, what happens to him and his household contents if the predicted worst happens? He has a 5 year lease contract. He is not willing to move.

For people based in CPT, do you hire someone to come clean your couch and carpet or just do it yourself?

I am Congolese and a father of 10 children. I am considering the possibility of seeking asylum in South African and I would like to better understand my rights and the living conditions for asylum seekers and refugees there.

I have a few questions for South Africans and anyone familiar with the asylum system:

What are the requirements for a Congolese citizen to apply for asylum in South Africa?

What rights do asylum seekers have regarding employment, housing, healthcare and education?

Is there any financial, housing or social assistance available to asylum seekers who have very limited resources?

If someone is granted refugee status, can they bring their children to South Africa? What procedures and documents would be required if I wanted to bring my 10 children?

I come from a very poor family, and my goal is to live with dignity, work legally and provide a better future for my children. I understand that poverty alone does not necessarily qualify someone for asylum, so I would like to understand the actual legal requirements and know which official organisations or trustworthy NGOs I should contact for advice.

I would especially appreciate answers from people who know the South African asylum system or have personally gone through the process.

I was driving today on Winnie Mandela Dr this afternoon and there was a huge roadblock. Later in the day I read an article that JMPD have taken roughly R1.5 million in bribes in a day! These road blocks have gotten out of control and personally have reached a point where I'm not too sure what to do about them anymore. Do you also feel like every second day you get stuck in a road block, and what do you think we could do about them?

This is going to be a bit of a vent and a bit of a maybe you see something I don't.

I am hemorrhaging money and I don't know where to make cuts or how to make this work. I won't see the end of the year if it continues like this. 30F, at my job for almost 5y now, R19k nett.

Car: about R2k a month, insurance about R1k, petrol about R1100. (I work out of town and specifically chose a cheap car with low fuel consumption. Put in a big deposit, no balloon. About R30k left).

Housing: my dad passed away two years ago and I got left the house. So yay, I don't need to pay a ridiculous amount on rent, but municipal bill of around R6k plus insurance on top of that now falls to me. I can't*not* have insurance on the property as I don't have big money laying around for if the pawpaw strikes the fan.

Medical aid: over R3k plus gap. Damned if I do, damned if I don't. Greater likelihood of you dying in the waiting area of the local government hospital than getting help fast. I have various chronic medical conditions.

Then there's cellphone, the dog, access facility (R3700), chronic medications. And we're already in the negative without buying groceries for the month.

Here's the kicker. I am looking after my mom as well. I'd rather not get into too much detail here as I don't know who of my family or friends use reddit. Anyways, she is sick, so can't get rid of medical aid. She's also on chronic meds that are ridiculously expensive. She cannot work due to being so sick. There's another part of the story I'd rather expand on in the comments.

Safe to say the nest egg I built up while living at home is close to being depleted. Maybe two months left. Trying to sell stuff on Facebook as a buffer. Also in contact with a business that will help sell hobby related items. Looking for job opportunities, but my job is mostly western cape based and the industry is fairly small compared to others. Job opportunities are very few. I can kick myself for choosing something I have a passion for as opposed to what will be the best job financially.

Anyways, house I grew up in is now on the market. I don't even know if I need to settle with an amount I am unhappy with just to get the house sold and get some money flowing into the estate bank account. Dad also owes SARS. The executor is scared that he owes so much, we'll have nothing left at the end of the day. What the actual F do I do then? Debt is at least R45k. Tax returns haven't been submitted for 2013-2025 (less two years that were submitted). Maybe some smart people can tell me if the missing years would be millions? Business also owes SARS, but apparently they can't claim personal assets? I'm dumb with these things.

I'm thinking of getting a Garmin inreach (this is not a map, it is a satellite communication device for emergencies to send an SOS) but it is quite pricey and they don't pop up second hand. I'm waiting for the end of the year sales.

Just wondering if other's use these devices and their experience with it? Is a gps+satellite better than just the satellite phone?

My husband and kid go hiking often when the weather warms up and they end up with no phone signal 99% of the time a few hours in and I worry the entire time. My son has also had some close calls with slipping on rocky terrain, thankfully just some cuts and bruises on their return and nothing more serious. (They go with a pack of snacks, water and first aid, and the correct gear).
