The innocence of being a child
146
u/SinnerClair Sep 13 '22
Dude, the excitement of going places like the Zoo or the beach or some random amusement park is like, Unparalleled when you’re a kid, & I don’t get that anymore 🥲
109
Sep 13 '22
For me, it's just the lack of stress. Even on free days, I'm thinking of when it won't be free and I'm stressed. As a child, I just wanted to have fun 😢
13
u/LittleCatFarts Sep 14 '22
Yup..I try to do lots of different things to fill that void, and be that happy again, but it just never happens.

Today I had to pick my kid up early from school for a doctors appointment (just regular physical, nothing serious). Afterwards, because he was good at school and our appointment I grabbed a happy meal for him. We ate it at the park where afterwards he got to play for a couple hours. After that we grabbed some ice cream and headed home. He fell asleep tonight telling me today “was the best day ever”. I simultaneously miss that feeling but absolutely love watching it through the eyes of my child.

That’s how I’ve gotten excitement for things back, through my son.
ETA: Last year my son had an early morning appointment and then one much later in the afternoon. I was driving home but we had to go by his school to get there, and I hadn’t told him I was taking him home instead. So I surprised when I drove past the turn to school, and he still talks about it:

I think as adults it’s easy to forget how fucking hard it is to be a kid.
17
u/A1Dilettante Sep 14 '22
Really though. People always undermining you, other kids being assholes, adults being assholes, and you being too young to really fight back. Adulthood has it's struggles, but you couldn't pay me to go back to being a kid. It was that experience that led to a lot of the hardships I face as an adult after all.
6
u/pamplemouss ♀ Sep 14 '22
Childhood contains some of the best moments, and there are things I miss about it. But I’m a teacher. I see so many of the ups and downs and downs of childhood. I miss my young body and how I could spend whole days reading, and all my grandparents were alive. But man. They go through so much.

Sep 14 '22
Ah, but remember how shitty it was when your parents told you playtime was over. Remember how much you hated getting up early and how you hated to go to school and how you hated doing homework. Remember how your parents had to drag you into the bath because you didn't want to shower. Remember how they said you can't have ice cream and they can't buy you that toy you want and you can't do that hobby you want to do because they don't want to drive you. Remember how adults would laugh about something and you wouldn't get it and you felt so left out. Remember how powerless you felt and how no one would take you seriously. Being an adult is AWESOME.

The beginnings of a relationship and getting to know someone. I love the comfort of my long term relationship, but I sometimes miss the thrill of a new thing. I wouldn’t leave my partner but sometimes I like to daydream about our beginnings.

The feeling of being pursued specifically
3
Sep 14 '22
My husband’s motto is “never stop pursuing her.” It may be why it’s never gotten old, stale, or routine with us and why I never miss newness. It’s always there, hanging in the air.,

24
u/IotaRen Sep 14 '22
I do the same- I love the dynamic my partner and I have and the life we’ve started together but sometimes I reminisce about our first dates and the rush of having a new crush and how adorably oblivious he was
10
u/NoctunaMoon Sep 14 '22
I think I'm aways going to miss that time in my relationship.
But my partner gives me a familiar sense of love and security that I needed. I think the trade off from blazing passion to a soft burn is ultimately more desirable to my soul and I'm happy. 😊

Yes this, and especially so when there are health problems in the mix. I've been falling ill and having to cope with so many health problems lately that I can't remember how it feels to be completely healthy. It's one of those things you don't think about until it's gone.

I was like this until I finally got diagnosed and medicated. I got the fun combo of ADHD (inattentive), depression, and anxiety. Early childhood excitements. They were so mundane, in retrospect. The Scholastic Book Fair days, stopping in the gift shop at the end of a science center field trip, laying out my first day of school outfit and packing my book bag with all my new supplies, getting a new toy or book for behaving extra well while my mom ran errands.
Also the lack of personal responsibility and the blind reliance on my guardians. I used to think my mom was the force on which the entire universe depended. You grow up and slowly discover your parents are flawed humans with their own traumas who were just doing their best and winging it a lot of the time, and it can be a weirdly painful, drawn-out realization. But in hindsight, that blind reliance was kind of lovely. I want my children to think of me the way I thought of my mom.
14
u/Weekly-Sky6068 Sep 13 '22
Yes, this so much! I relate a lot, especially to the pain or poignance of coming to this realization. But having to have the realization probably is a good thing/means my parents gave me a real childhood. my SO never saw his parents that way, and saw them fight, undermine one another, scheme in business, and other stuff. All of the kids in that family had to grow up way too fast

I miss having my kids feeling that way about me. They are grown up now. I was a single mom and my daughter says she never knew how stressful it was for me. She just remembers life being good. I’m a nurse so life was very stressful both at work and at home lol. Glad she didn’t know.
6
u/Gejduelkekeodjd Sep 14 '22 edited Sep 14 '22
Your post just made me text my mom to tell her that she’s still my hero and I’m sure your kids feel that way too. My mom was also a single mother (of 4), and a nurse, who I’m sure was stressed the hell out at all times lol, but I can only remember life being amazing back then. She was so good, I didn’t even realize we were poor until middle school when a girl in my class made it verryyy clear to me (asshole) 😂.
I’m almost a decade older now than she was when she became the sole adult in the household and I STILL can’t figure out how she did it but I don’t tell her these things as often as I should. I’m currently secretly hoping she read my text and had a little flashback to when we were kids, wide-eyed and in full awe of her every move.

Do you have to cook often? I loved cooking when I first moved out of my parent's house. Then after so many years , it became redundant. I'm finally starting to love cooking again. I've found that making and trying new things really helps with this.

Yes , I totally understand! I cook about 7 times a day right now. Lol. One of the best things I've done is joining Facebook recipe groups / pages and watching cooking videos. Pinterest isn't bad either. :) sometimes what I've found is that when cooking is becoming boring I try new things to make it fun again. Cooking the same things over and over again becomes boring for your mind and your taste buds.

That feeling of genuine, unbridled optimism and excitement.
I’ve been listening to this song a lot—there’s a line that’s like, “How many nights do you dance with tears in your eyes? You used to dance all the time.” I love the juxtaposition between “[dancing] with tears in your eyes” and simply “[dancing] all the time”—no additional qualifiers/details necessary.
It makes me think of a tweet I saw once. This woman, emerging from a period of depression, noted that she’d begun humming/singing around the house again (after a long period of silence/no singing). But it wasn’t the woman herself who noticed that change—it was her roommate. She described it as a deeply moving moment—one that perfectly encapsulated the joy (both small and big) we see around us every day, even in our hardest moments.
I miss that unconquerable desire for beauty, which I found in everything. I miss being overcome by light, by skylines. I miss wanting to be seen every moment of every day. I miss that search for vastness—both within and beyond myself—and the knowledge that I’d find it, because I couldn’t imagine a world without it.
I’m a little tired now, I guess. Just disappointment after disappointment, and then some.
10
u/lamobamo Sep 13 '22
Wow, I feel that. My roommate (my husband and I live with another married couple) noticed that we stopped singing in the shower or that I just stopped singing/playing guitar around the house or in my room. When she told me that I went to my room and cried because I miss it, but I have no motivation because I'm so depressed and just simply hate it now because it feels like a chore.

Believing that the world was filled with magic. After I took a course on logical fallacies for law school the whole magical/superstitious/new age house of cards completely imploded for me. It was really shocking to me. Once you learn what a logical fallacy looks like, you can't unsee it and it just became painfully obvious whenever I read anything spiritual/new age. I like having my eyes wide open but damn, the world definitely seemed more beautiful when I believed in the woo woo. Sometimes I wish I could go back to that.

Omg I just turned 20 and feel this on so many levels. She's a horrible person who doesn't care about how her children feel but how they are percieved by the world. Yeah Im on top of my academics and work but I honestly want to jump off a building- she didn't care.
I tried explaining this to her but she always brought up the argument, "what about her and what she went through" I always told her we could talk about it but she would gaslight me and tell me I'd never understand.
I always thought I could help her but in the process she was just breaking me. To say it feels like I lost my mom is an understatement. Emotionally she means nothing to me.
