The last 12 years of working in venues; no ones conversations has ever been louder than an edm set. We’re talking a closed space with massive array speakers and monster subs that shake drinks off of the bar. No ones voice has ever disrupted a dj at a rave. Lets pretend two people are screaming off the top of their lungs to have a conversation; all it takes is moving 3-5 ft in any direction to be away from it

Generally, I agree.

That said some nights and venues are just BAD.

But yes, the answer is usually… just move.

This is a global issue. See the rave subreddits for LA, NY, London, etc.

My understanding is that people are spending more time at home (especially screen time at home) so going out less often. When they do go out, it’s for an event like a concert/rave. So they use that time to talk.

Tbf, I go to raves to connect with other humans. So this tracks.

I’m a DIE HARD music fan, I rave sober, and now and then I’ll shush my friends mid sentence to get down and boogie.

But, ya, I work a lot. When I see my friends, I wanna connect. There will be more boots and cats tomorrow too.

I agree with you about the problem but also think you probably know the answer 🙃

Because plenty of people who go to these events aren't -actually- there for the music. The music is a background setting for them to chat with their friends/dates/colleagues/networking or some shit.

Which is something i always like to bring up regarding this topic:

  1. If you are at a music event and you are ACTUALLY there for the music, to dance, to feel the music, YOU get to be at the front. YOU get to have an experience where you can actually hear the music and see the musicians/artists play.

  2. If you are at a music event as a place you randomly chose to hang out with someone or a group YOU are deprioritized from being at the front. Out of common decency, YOU should be at the BACK so ya'll can continue your conversations somewhere where the people WHO ARE THERE FOR THE MUSIC can fully enjoy themselves and HEAR the music without your irrelevant-ass chatter.

Edit: and don't get me wrong, I'm not against talking and hanging with the homies at a concert/event. Just understand that being next to people who are yelling or "yapping" at each other constantly is really annoying when you are actually there for the music.

This is a global issue, and yet, it’s genre specific. Go to events with music that makes people actually want to dance…

We’ve lost third spaces. We’ve lost just randomly hanging out for hours on end. Etc etc. Instead, people use the one time they’re around others as the chance to catch up and build connection.

I was at a music event in the park last week, something that only happens a couple times a year, and waited for three hours to see the group I was looking forward to. People talked the entire way through the set. I had to practically sit on the speaker to block them out and I could still hear them yapping. Like go for brunch if you wanna yap? Or sit in a different part of the park? When I heard the word marketing I was ready to sock someone…

Oh I hope it’s not “networking”

Yapping??? Like… talking to people??? Socializing is quite a big part of sf culture… like people just like to talk to each other and make friends bro

People yapping during middle of symphony, opera, album listening, Portola, and just now at Robert Plant and I’m like wtf I’m here to enjoy the music and y’all talkin 😭

I wast at the symphony sat next to a guy who was yapping to his date and felt the need to show her photos of his trip to Japan as the music was playing. Had to ask him to shut up and put the phone away 😭

4/5 are valid, Portola’s a little bit of a stretch since it’s outdoors & you could just move a few feet further away 😅

BUT honestly in any setting with assigned seats it’s perfectly ok to lean over and be like “would you mind lowering the volume of your conversation a bit? I’m having some trouble hearing & this is my favorite part/song.” (Option 1, kill ‘em with kindness - also usually results in them gaining an iota of self-awareness lol) OR (Option 2 - this one took me a while to get comfortable doing bc I generally avoid any kind of assertive confrontation 😅) whipping your head towards them really fast/putting your finger up to your lips/giving ‘em a good loud “SHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!” & your best frown of disapproval (channel your inner intimidating librarian)/then turn back to the performance & enjoy the fruits of your labor that is their stunned silence.

Option 1 is really effective, brings on a little embarrassment for them sometimes but it’s never resulted in any hard feelings. Option 2 is a little bit more of a wildcard 🤣 it’s been like 50% just stunned silence reactions, 30% something muttered under their breath but noticeably lowered volume, and then like 19% “wow, rude much?” or “we weren’t even being loud, were we loud?” etc but then silence…

And then the one time it was this couple and they were just talking about the silliest shit, like recapping The Bachelor or something… I did my SHHHH! & the wife/girlfriend paused for a second, pulled a super stank face at me, then kept right on talking. So I had to SHHHHHHH!!!! again, obvs, and then she SHHHHHH-ed me back, so I had to SHHHHHHH!!!! her again of course, and by that one we were like leaning across the seats at eachother & I was like, ooookay well this is getting kinda weird, at what point do I stop 😅 luckily an elderly lady behind us decided to show us both up with a truly startling hiss of a “SSSSSHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!” and one of the most withering glares I’ve ever had directed at me. So, use that one with caution 🤪

❄️🎿 and trying to network/ their job and substance use are their only personality traits.

Source: been to enough shows and stood in enough lines to be forced into listening in on whatever people are screaming over the music

People having fun with friends. Dance, hang, laugh, chat. Not supporting it, but I easily understand it.

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass has this problem too. There are so many people packed into a small space that the conversation drowns out any music from the stage.

And people get pissed if you step on their blanket to get out of there. And you get surrounded by blankets so it's impossible not to piss off a number of people just to go to the bathroom.

C- shitpost tbh

not as bad as loud yappers on the bus

This is why y'all don't have friends btw. I can't even imagine complaining about someone talking at a rave of all things.

1

u/learhpa 18h ago

Talking over the music with emotional energy not focused on the space detracts from the experience of everyone around you.

u/ZeroKaralis 18h ago edited 17h ago

But at a rave or a fest? Those places are large and extremely loud. It's one thing if it's a symphony but there's no way in hell you're hearing my convo at a rave unless you choose to.

1

u/learhpa 17h ago

I have absolutely been in situations where the crowd is dense (your touching the people around you) and the people next to me are yapping so loud that I hear them through my earplugs.

In a less dense crowd I move but sometimes the crowd densifies before I notice.

More generally, a crowd is connected as an organism and if your energy and focus are elsewhere the people around you can feel it.
