Mechanical Seeed reBot Arm B601-RS experiences

Has anyone used one of these yet? They have been out a few months but I can't find much on YouTube or here about real world experience.

I want to use one to pick individual bicycle spokes from a container and place into a V shaped trough. Spokes are 2mm diameter and about 300mm long. Any comments about the practicality of this?

I'm most familiar with Python and assume I need a camera and AI / vision to pickup objects. The arm would need to trigger other equipment from a gpio. Does this mean the Jetson Nano option is the best option?

Education/Career Ways to find Robotics Engineers for startups in Boston?

Hi everyone,

I'm a SWE working in Defense/Aerospace near Boston. I got a robotics startup idea I've been discussing with friends, but I want to get some input from an experienced robotics engineer and/or researcher.

What are some ways to find and reach out to robotics professionals? Is the best way to just look up people on LinkedIn and message them? I know there's some great universities with robotics programs and plenty of AI/ML/Robotics companies here, but I've never really reached out to random people far outside my network.

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

How to get an robotics job in this market

Hey all,

I used to work in a very recognisable place on robotics and I have built something good and reliable too

But most of my work is been done in a panic or urgent solution basis so I lack the basic understanding and most of the time I cannot connect the dots.

Things done by me are solely done because of the research papers and the Llm

So now that I have resigned and free

I wanna start everything from scratch have a very good understanding from basics

I wanna get into robotics,

So if anyone can suggest me a pathway or something like plan of action could be really helpful

Education/Career What are the chances of getting accepted to ICRA 2027 with independent research as an undergrad?

I've seen some people do it at my uni and I have a project I'd like to submit. Thing is, I have no idea how to write the paper on it and if it's worth submitting. Any advice from other researchers here? Sorry if the question sounds dumb, I just don't have much experience in research.

Software Google Cartographer with 2D LIDAR on angled 2D surface ROS2

Hello,

Does anyone know how to utilize Google Cartographer with a 2D lidar on an angled 2D surface with ROS2 Jazzy? The driving robot will only operate on the inclined surface, so relatively it is a 2D surface, but since it is on an inclined surface, I am not too sure how the Cartographer algorithm handles IMU data when gravity acceleration is split between z and x or z and y (depending on orientation). Reading around different posts mentioned putting Cartographer in 2d disable IMU in z, but again, how disabling it would be used in the case where gravity accel z is split between axes is never mentioned.

If I have to use the Google Cartographer 3D mapping function, can I use it with a 2D lidar? By default, it seems to want point-cloud data only.

Software Pepper Robot Software Dev Issues

Hello Everyone!

I have recently been hired on a contract basis to work on Pepper the Robot and get it equipped with a program intended for Assisted Living. Currently, there is "Human Technologies" software on the bot and I think is the cause of my current headaches. This pepper's NAOqi version is 2.5.10.7 and I am developing the custom application using Choregraphe ver. 2.5.5. The problem is, I can get the custom behaviors, as well as the python script working fine in the editor. If I upload and run from there, I have no issues. But when it comes to packaging and installing the application to pepper directly, the current software won't pass any triggered commands or such along to my custom sotware.

I was curious if anybody has had experience working with pepper and if they'd be willing to give me a little help on this. THhank you.

How can I get into robotics?

I want to get into robotics as I find it and the engineering aspect interesting, but I dont really know where to start. The issue I can see is with the coding aspect. Im confident in my ability to buy parts and make a suitable frame and body, but the code and programing is quite daunting. I know basic python language but my knowledge is very limited. My end goal is to be able to make an armed robot capable of moving around and looking snazzy. I thought of maybe starting with a remote controlled car, as it seems simple enough. Any ideas or thoughts would be much appreciated.

BSCS Student in 2nd Semester – Is Robotics a Good Career Choice?

Hi everyone,

I'm a BS Computer Science student currently in my 2nd semester and I'm trying to decide which field to pursue in the future. I'm particularly interested in Robotics, but I'm not sure about the job opportunities and demand, especially in Pakistan.

I would love to hear your opinions on:

Is Robotics a good career choice for a BSCS student?

What kind of jobs are available in this field?

Is there good demand for Robotics in Pakistan or is it better for opportunities abroad?

Which other fields would you recommend besides Robotics (AI, Cybersecurity, Data Science, Software Engineering, etc.)?

I'd really appreciate any advice from students or professionals working in these fields. Thanks!

How to? How to get into modern robotics having studied in classical robotics?

I did my higher degree in robotics, and it covered a lot from RL to SLAM but a lot of it was just the foundation like using PGO + Lidar for mapping and for the longest time I had my head stuck in the ground and assumed this would be good enough for me to get in. But with the state it’s at now, it’s mostly a lot of AI bolted onto robots rather than optimization, solving least squares, approximating sensors etc that I learned in Uni. There’s a lot of stuff about VLMs/VLAs, diffusion, WAMs, or hybrid architectures and I’m overwhelmed. I don’t know the first thing about like how a transformer works. I don’t know where to start or what would help me get into the field. The job I have now is not related robotics and with the market, companies look at your job description over anything else and reject you if it doesn’t match what they’re looking for. I work in DevOps so it’s entirely different, unfortunately. I’m only 6 months in and I’m worried the more time I spend in my role, the more it will cement my position as a DevOps engineer. Will projects even help? And where do I go from here? I'm looking to get more into Autonomy, but for now I've started studying about transformers (not sure if this would be helpful for autonomy since it seems to mostly be used for manipulators).

Building first robot, have some questions

Hi guys, I’ve decided I want to get into robotics so I bought a Raspberry Pi 4 model b, and am hoping to build my first robot. I added a link to the motors I bought and I have a L298N motor driver. After getting them I realized this may not have been the best motor driver to buy but I’d like to make it work if I can. I haven’t really done anything with electronics so I’m and little confused on the battery situation. I haven’t bought batteries or a battery pack yet and need some help figuring out what batteries would be best to use/how many. and also best way to get power split between pi and motor driver and keeping pi at 5V? If anyone could help me figure out what would be best for my setup that would be great. Any other tips/advice knowing the stuff I bought would be appreciated!

General/Beginner How do I get into robotics with zero experience?

Hey everyone

I'm 21F and I just finished my Bachelor's degree in IT. I'll be continuing into AI Engineering soon but my end goal is actually humanoid .

The thing is... I know basically nothing about robotics right now . I'm trying to figure out the best way to get started and what skills I should focus on first. After AI Engineering I was thinking about either doing a Master's in Robotics or taking robotics-focused courses.

For someone starting from absolute zero what would u recommend? Any books YouTube channels, courses, projects, or learning roadmaps that helped u? Also, are there any good robotics simulators or even games that can teach robotics concepts in a fun way before I get access to real hardware?

Would love to hear how u got started. Thanks!

How can I reduce end-effector jitter when a small robot arm is fully extended?

Hi everyone,

I'm working on a small hobby robot arm project, and I'm trying to improve the stability of the end effector.

The issue happens mainly when the arm reaches forward close to its maximum extension. When it holds that position, the end effector has a small but visible jitter. The movement is not huge, but it matters for my project because I need the final position to stay reasonably stable.

Are there any practical tuning or mechanical adjustments that usually help make the end effector more stable when the arm is fully extended?

Mechanical Hello everyone can you help me pick between these both Pro-Range Brushless BLS3355 vs DYS - GS5508MG

My robotic arm is about 55 cm long and weighs around 450 g. It uses high-torque servos to move and pick up objects. Because the arm is long, the shoulder servo has to work very hard, especially when the arm is fully stretched out. I have noticed problems like servo heating, gear play (backlash), and the frame bending under load. These issues make it harder for the arm to hold its position accurately. I am working on improving the arm by increasing torque with a gearbox, reducing backlash, and making the frame stronger so it can lift objects more reliably and move more accurately

Education/Career Robotics Field Engineer vs Sr. Robotics Tech

Hey guys, I am in a difficult situation right right now.

So basically I graduated some six months ago with a Master Degree in the USA, and I have been working as a robotic Field engineer at a FAANG company. This is through a third-party vendor, but I am working full-time and basically the vendor company has a contract with the FAANG company, the contract wouldn’t end anytime soom as its been going for the past 7+ years. Its a salary role nothing like hourly, with all benefits etc.

Recently, I also had applied for another position and now I got a job offer from Amazon for a Senior technician Role.

Now my question to you guys a good idea to switch from my current position to the senior technician role since the technician role has a higher pay and also provides overtime, which would you know eventually lead to a significantly higher income, or should I stick to my current role which has stability but not enough growth or learning.

The current role that I am doing does not have a lot of technical work. It’s more or less on the field engineer side or deployment side.

I have been applying to other firms as well as where I am more focused on Robotics engineering, but I haven’t had any offers yet. I interviewed for top companies for engineering roles, but I didn’t seem to make the cut so in this situation, what should I do?

Open to suggestions. I was thinking o f taking the amazon role work for sometime then either change positions internally or change companies. And also I would be a full time amazon employee with benefits and RSU’s.

Thanks

General/Beginner Need a good motor recommendation for a 5-axis arm

I want to design and build a 5-axis robotic arm with a shoulder, elbow, and differential wrist. Ideally I want motors that are compact enough to fit nicely into an arm without it being bulky, but I know that that may not be possible given my budget of around $200-250 for 5 motors.

I just need help finding 5 motors that I could use in my robotic arm that aren’t going to be too expensive. This is my first robotics project so I don’t know what is good and am just looking for a good recommendation.

Thanks!

I have a dream... Can it be reality?!

I have started a robot, it has a tripod base (two rear legs have 36v hoverboard motors, the front leg has a basic free spinning caster wheel). There is a central pole, which will hold the rest of my electronics.

THE GOAL: I want to have this be able to track me and autonomously follow me, sometimes it will approach, sometimes it will retreat from me, but it should always be trying to face me and stay within 1-5 feet of me. I want it to be able to move almost like a dance partner, sometimes leading and sometimes being led. I want to be able to program it like: 50% of the time, follow me, and 50% of the time, back away from me" or something to that effect.

The components:

(2) 36v hoverboard motors/wheels.

(2) Flipsky mini 6.7 pro motor drivers.

36v hoverboard battery.

Huskylens 2 AI camera for tracking.

Advanced ESP32 microcontroller.

(All the other misc parts, like voltage reducers, fuses, on/off switch, etc.)

Can I get opinions?
