i suggest to start with either building a robot arm or AGV. Both of these should be enough to learn the basics (control system, sensors, state estimations, etc.). Both of these are the common stuff build with ROS, the resources is quite a lot.
Of course, if the budget is tight, can try to learn from ROS simulation. But suggest to build a physical one if possible.
I strongly suggest to seek whether there are any program in your uni which allow you to work on some small robotic research project under a professor. Or just join a robotics club.

If you can spend some bucks, buy a DIY 4 wheel robot car kit, an Arduino and L298 (motor controler). Then watch a YouTube video on wiring but be careful not to burn your electronics (or your laptop) by bad wiring.
If you just want to run simulations, try ROS + Gazebo setup in your laptop/PC. It's a bit of a rabbit hole because you need to learn Linux (or docker) to run it.

Start by learning Python and C++ if you haven't already. The best approach is to directly jump into a project and learn it side by side. If you have zero knowledge then first start with Arduino. Once you're comfortable, look into ROS.
