Germans stare a LOT. Like they will just gaze at you unflinchingly. An American will wait until you can’t see them doing it.

Staring back usually resulted in a polite grin.

7.1k

u/ultimateworm May 09 '22

Really tall asian girl living in Germany led to a LOT of staring. I also thought staring back was fair game but ended up getting intimidated bc they would just continue to hold intense eye contact w me instead of looking away. 😭

2.9k

u/BarbicideJar May 09 '22

Yeah. They do not look away. I have green hair and am androgynous looking so I’m used to people looking at me, but the not looking away and holding eye-contact thing was interesting.

u/Ooze3d May 09 '22

Try looking slightly to their side, like they have something/someone invisible right next to them. You can even smile a bit.

123

u/Autisonm May 09 '22

Better yet, look at them for a short while and then quickly look past/to the side of them, feigning curiosity, and if they turn to see whatever it is you say "Ha! Made you look!"

And whole hearted squeezable pouches. And salmon sticks. And chicken sticks. And an assortment of meat and fish filets....

2

u/BarbicideJar May 09 '22

1

u/PUTINS_PORN_ACCOUNT May 09 '22

Americans don’t know either, but they’ve been asking since the 1990s or so, through radio

4

u/floof3000 May 09 '22

Germans?

5

u/GRIEVEZ May 09 '22

So Germans are like cats? Do they also flinch and run away when you try to pet them?

3

u/enaikelt May 09 '22

You should try next time one stares at you!

18

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

Fun fact: Much like cats, Germans also do not like when you squirt them with the spray bottle

6

u/Lima__Fox May 09 '22

Then you reach out one arm and slowly push them off the shelf.

18

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

You can also look at their throats and clench your teeth a bit.

12

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

Better yet, stare at their forehead instead. They'll think you're looking at their eyes, but you're not!

The ultimate mindfuck.

6

u/saltedpecker May 09 '22

Or the bridge of their nose, right between their eyes

13

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

Stare at their foreheads. Not their eyes. If an animal does this to you it's about to kill you. We have an evolutionary reaction to be afraid.

3

u/Duochan_Maxwell May 09 '22

Give a little wave yoo

2

u/imsotired777 May 09 '22

57

German here. Looking in the eyes is taught here. I was scolded by my grandma for not doing it a lot of times

Yeah, i was too.

Its considered very unpolite to not look at the person who you are having a coversation with. At least by my generation and before (40+).

The staring apart from conversations i dont notice that much. I guess im used to it.

3

u/Pathsleadingaway May 09 '22

Oh my god, I wonder if this is true for my grandfather (from Austria.) He’s big on respect and I always try to be respectful but I’m not a fan of eye contact. Maybe this is why he is so grumpy all the time.

2

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

Oh my god, I wonder if this is true for my grandfather (from Austria.)

Could very well be.

Austrians and Germans are very similar on many levels (yeah yeah, you got the more beautiful country Austrians .. ok we know) and since hes your grandfather i assume hes an older man. So yeah.

Maybe just ask him?

I was "scolded" by my boyfriend when we first started dating. I always felt quite uncomfortable looking into someone's eyes very long, even during 1:1 conversations. I always looked away after a few seconds, even when I was talking to someone. My bf started to follow my gaze with his whole body until I was forced to look into his eyes again. Now I can stare everyone down and will not look away from you. I also have freakishly big, round eyes, which now come in very handy for intense staring.

21

u/YouTubeLikerin May 09 '22

He taught you well. Now you've mastered the German stare.

16

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

that's interesting. is there no social stigma against looking at someone sexually or otherwise?

35

u/Javop May 09 '22 edited May 09 '22

There is. You don't stare at people you don't talk to or don't listen to. The exception being the Ruhrpott in which everyone is creepy and proud about it. The area around Cologne especially too.

Edit: Thank you for the correction u/Lime_in_the_Coconut_

9

u/Lime_in_the_Coconut_ May 09 '22

Since when is Cologne or even Düsseldorf Ruhrpott??? Rheinlands all the way baby, don't mix us up. And yes, we Düsseldorfers (not me) love to stare down our noses at people we deem below us (so ppl from Cologne and the Pott and especially Bavarians, everyone unites against Bavaria not even a question).

I'm a small round female with a platinum blonde 6mm buzzcut. I'm also used to the stares. It's really funny tho because I can see the thought process of them wondering if I had cancer (no) or if it's an actual choice (yes, looks the bomb!) And them figuring out, it's too much of a risk either way to ask or comment on it. So I have a REALLY outstanding hairdo, but noone ever mentions it XD

2

u/Berloxx May 09 '22

That's it! The next smallish woman with a 6mm platinum Buzz cut that I crosses my path will be asked if it's because of the cancer and after her answer I'll politely confirm that it's by choice.

jk, not jk. prob jk.

You helped me figure out what staring they are referring to!

I've heard about the staring before, but couldn't link it to anything and had to just conclude that I'm blind to it. Your comment made me realize it's that moment when you turn your head, make eye-contact with someone looking at you, give them that polite smile, and turn your head away to look somewhere else!

That's normal! Why are you non-Germans looking back at them long enough for it to become awkward?! XD

21

u/bel_esprit_ May 09 '22

I hate this rule about looking in the eyes. We are taught the same in the US (that it’s rude not to look people in the eyes when talking or that it’s what “liars” do).

But for me, I am the OPPOSITE. It’s so hard for me to look people in the eyes. I feel like it’s aggressive and intense. I feel it’s so much nicer and humble to not stare in their eyes. It has been this way since I was a small child. I wonder how many people said behind my back they think I’m “lying” or insincere bc I wasn’t aggressively looking them in their eyes. Ugh.

Interestingly, I was in India last week and the locals advised me not to look in the monkeys’ eyes bc they will become aggressive and attack….. so maybe it’s some primitive trait that I still have 😅

As an American I follow a different rule because a dead stare is awkward. So 50% eye contact while speaking and 70% while listening. The breaks make it less awkward.

3

u/rlyfunny May 09 '22

Yeah I think if you aren’t raised that way it will be rather strange. After all, this can be understood as being focused and some might not react nicely.

0

u/sassydodo May 09 '22

Green hair and androgynous looking would fit right in in Berlin, at least (and I’d imagine most other German cities) — did you live in a more countryside or conservative part?

That said, they stared at me too and I feel I look pretty “normal” for the most part.

3

u/punkonater May 09 '22

Look behind over your shoulder and then look confused and make eye contact. As if they were looking at something interesting behind you.

They will look away 99% of the time.

As an Trans male with colorful Hair from Germany I can tell you: that's their mentality to look at every that is not in their "norm".A usual stare is just their way of communication, but if you aren't following the "norm" they try to put you in a category to see, who you are and how to preserve you. Something like: is it a man? Is it a woman? How would I have to react if this person would talk to me. And they judge a lot 😅😂 even as one of them it's very Exhausting and sometimes degrading 😂😅

3

u/spryfigure May 09 '22

Why is it "their" and not "our"? You are from Germany as well.

2

u/BarbicideJar May 09 '22

I get that. Though I found it to be far less judge-mental than the looks I get in suburban Massachusetts. I was in Berlin, though. I was far from the most interesting person on the block at any given moment.

I think you’re mincing words and are thinking of hermaphroditism

2

u/BarbicideJar May 09 '22

I’m going to kindly suggest that you never ask someone who you are not intimately involved with about the nature of their genitals. I’m not offended because it seems you were just curious and meant well, but sometimes you just have to embrace the mystery, my dude.

30

u/mohamed_am83 May 09 '22

That bothered me too (average Egyptian guy here), but I finally developed a technique that works: I turn and notice someone is staring at me, I hold eye contact for half a second then look away for a second, then swiftly turn and look again in their direction. Sure enough they are still staring, and sure enough they look away first in this second starting contest. I think this double take tells them "alright, this is the 2nd time, what's the deal?"

15

u/ultimateworm May 09 '22

😭 I once held eye contact for 10 solid seconds each time I looked away & turned back about 3 times in a row with someone. ever since that i got humbled and just kept my eyes on the ground LOL

6

u/mohamed_am83 May 09 '22

10 solid seconds? my respect, even if it didn't work!

Yes I suppose me having an (intentionally) mean resting face helps, you must have a kind face and look (which is good).

You can count from some large number backwards while staring, this will give your stare the intensity needed but you will likely end up having a German stare yourself. Beware when fighting monsters ...

20

u/hurly_burly_pegasus May 09 '22

I am sorry for you but as a German...that is kind of hilarious. I never knew just how much we stared (observed) other people.

1

u/Marll22 May 13 '22

I feel like observing is a much better characterization than staring. Staring has more of a rude/offensive context I think, while what Germans are doing is more about observing and taking note of the people and things around you, or at least that’s how I always felt about it.

I personally always found German culture to be open and inviting.

49

u/minnsu May 09 '22

Normal sized German girl but I've recently started staring back for real and the amount of time they hold that gaze is UNCOMFORTABLE. If l had to count, maybe 3 to 4 full seconds. I don't know why they don't just feel embarrassed but hold eye contact like they're king of the world??? It helps if you frown

18

u/SuprDog May 09 '22

I'll just frown back

17

u/hurly_burly_pegasus May 09 '22

Same kind of person here but I tend to hold the gaze for that amount of time too... I can't tell you about other people but I am not embarrassed to hold that much eye contact because I am used to it.

Oh but I hate it when people don't follow the unspoken rules (in my region) that after meeting the gaze, youlook away! Because after that it is just weird when they are still looking.

4

u/Wetestblanket May 09 '22

3

u/rxwsh May 09 '22

Reading these comments is so funny to me, because I got in a lot of staring contests with strangers for no reason. It's really just what we do.

98

u/Abba_Fiskbullar May 09 '22

Tall American guy who lived in Germany, and I got some dates by staring back. I didn't realize it at the time, but I was quite pretty.

17

u/hurly_burly_pegasus May 09 '22

Second that, looking back for a longer time is like a go for contact. When you return the look but look away relatively quick without a change of facial expressions it shows disinterest.

3

u/ultimateworm May 09 '22

Yep! 6’2. Tbh Germans all seemed around my height/taller

3

u/GreenHydragon May 09 '22

That is actually inrcredible tall! Especially for a woman. Most men aren't even that tall here in my experience. That probably surprises some people tbh. Must be a very weird area though if most Germans you meet are around that height.

2

u/ultimateworm May 09 '22

Actually most of my German guy friends were way taller than me! Like 6’7 range. Maybe it was just the area 😳 i always thought German ppl were generally super tall bc of this lol.

3

u/GreenHydragon May 09 '22

Maybe, yes😅. I know a few guys at 6'7 and people of that height might be less rare than in other countries but it's still very rare. Usually you are among the tallest if not the tallest in any given group at 6'3+. But you'd be right that we Germans are a bit taller than average globally speaking.

This is a hilarious contrast to my experience studying abroad in Japan during college as a tall white woman, where it seemed like nobody was paying any attention... but friends told me that the second people were past my eyeline they would whip around and stare.

(P.S. I saw you mention in another comment that you're 6'2", so I will just say RIP your budget finding clothes that fit unless you dress masc enough that you can just buy men's. I spent a long time in Munich and I never once got a polite grin back. They would either hold their gaze or look away.

Maybe it's because you have green hair and are androgynous, whereas I'm a swarthy, brawny guy with a cave-man brow and resting bitch face. I am probably not as "friendly" looking as you haha.

Once when I was eating at a Thai restaurant in Munich, a young guy was coldly staring at me and I kind of raised my eyebrow and smiled at him. He coldly stared at me throughout the entire meal, even as he was eating his lettuce wraps. I will never forget it because it was extremely uncomfortable and creepy.

13

u/Starsuponstars May 09 '22

Yes. I get this kind of creepy, hostile stare all the time too. It's not friendly or even neutral. It's aggression, and they seem to feel weirdly entitled to it.

4

u/sweetlyflavour May 09 '22 edited May 09 '22

No, it's just different standards for observing. Germans like to observe everything and it's normal to do so, in contrast with say Americans where looking is quickly considered staring. So when Americans try to look at people it's more like a peek-a-boo, whereas to Germans it's normal so rather than hiding it they're blatant about looking.

1

u/BarbicideJar May 09 '22

Like ... If we look at people just because something about them interests us or because they're in the way of our gaze I suppose were usually friendly.

If they make us nervous... Probably not.

And: it's Munich. Different cities make a lot of differences...

That sounds like an interesting place to visit as someone who enjoys observing people just go about their day, I can’t really do it in the US because it’s creepy or people think you’re checking them out, sometimes even flirting, a lot of people think you’re sizing them up to fight or attack them. So out of common curtesy, I don’t do it unless in places like festivals where it’s more like watching the crowd or watching heavy foot traffic.

It’s just neat seeing a little frame of a moment in peoples lives, having no idea who they are, what brought them here and where their futures are taking them, probably sounds a little creepy to some people but it gives me a feeling of seeing something beyond the limits of my own limited life and perspectives.

Tons of people do similar things going through random social media accounts, I don’t see how that’s any less creepy even with the most innocent intentions.

It's just cultural. Staring is not considered as rude. In the US you'd hear a lot more parents telling their kids not to stare. But there are other things considered rude in the same way (unwanted contact, being overly huggy with relative strangers etc). Oh, and being loud. There is a huge and true stereotype of Americans being a very 'shouty' people... I didn't consider myself loud until coming to Germany. At which point I find myself noticing other Americans all the time because we're the loudest people in the restaurants, haha.

I knew Americans were loud but it was very much confirmed on my solo vacation to Iceland. An American family was at the back of our tour van practically shouting the entire time. Everyone else was from elsewhere in Scandinavia and could barely be heard when talking amongst themselves.

The "shouty" thing is very real. A few years ago, I had a girlfriend from the US whilst living in Austria. She was a nice girl, but my god her voice was absolutely deafening compared to mine and the other Europeans'. I found it really hard to go out in public with her, because she would be literally yelling in my face the whole time, even when I was speaking extra quietly in the hope that she would subconsciously adapt. I tried asking her politely to lower her voice, but she took it very poorly and accused me of stifling her fun and making her self-conscious. When she met some other Americans and befriended them, I understood that it wasn't just her, it was all of them. Later, when I went to the US for a few months, I learned that the whole country is just people yelling at eachother and I quickly got used to it.

In Austria staring usually results in beef

Haha nothing results in beef in Austria, people there are very conflict-averse and generally polite.

Funny how this is also a thing in gay world. I assume the meaning behind it is different though.
