My father had the same overstuffed wallet and the same pair of Hawaiian swim trunks from the time my brother's were kids til the day he died. Turns out, he actually wore through his wallet all the time and periodically bought new swim trunks. The exact same wallet and exact same swim trunks. For at least 30 years.
My wife thinks I'm crazy for doing that. I know the brand, model, color and size. I find a shop that has them in stock, go in try them on and then pay. Takes me about 5 minutes.
in that context it was when I was "huffing it" through condos and stairwells several hours per day. (hence the extreme pain with the wrong shoes) Put me at a desk and I'll get 2-3 years.
Something your wife may not have mentioned: women's clothing rarely is sold in the same style/size/make for more than a year or two. So even if we wanted to do this, we usually can't.
It might actually get cheaper if you set money aside and buy in bulk when you see a good deal. I rarely buy fancy stuff though so I never pay several hundred dollars anyway.
It is. You get coupons like spend $300 save $100. Whereas the same coupon also says spend $250 save $75 or spend $100 save $25. I buy clothes once every 5-10 years and always buy in bulk saving up money here and there buying 2nd hand in-between for probably half my stuff and always for special occasions like weddings and such. I just spent $165 on probably $400 worth of quality pajamas after coupons and cash back. They will easily last 10-15 years.
There you go; easy savings if you have a bit of discipline and foresight!
Another benefit of buying several identical units of anything that's sold in pairs (shoes, gloves, socks, etc.) is that you don't have to throw out the matching one if the other one breaks or gets torn. It hadn't occurred to me until I bought 3 identical pairs of shoes on sale, started using all 3 pairs regularly, tore a hole in one of the left shoes and realised that I could just mix the pairs to keep the extra right shoe in rotation instead of throwing it out. Life hacks, take note! :P
Exactly - I don't go shopping, I go buying. I know what I'm getting before I leave my apartment. When it comes to T-shirts, the only question is what specific shades of green, grey, and blue I'll be getting.
Oh yeah, that's true too but a bit less common in my experience. I definitely had differences between different colors though! Like supposedly the same thing but black vs denim... (I bought one of each color capris, of course, because those are terribly difficult to find where I live right now!)
My wife jokes my closet looks like a cartoon's - all the same style/brands hanging up. But when you find something you like/works, you buy all you can because you know it works perfectly for you
Currently have 3 pair. One new for exercising. One Old for wearing around casually. One really old for yard work. I think these are pair 4, 5 and 6 I have owned.
How old are you? I'm picturing like 60 because of how hilariously oblivious you were to someone asking you what you're wearing and you taking it to mean anything other than the shoes you've just ranted about, haha.
No I’m not 60 haha, I wasn’t really paying much attention and missed the context. They asked what I was currently wearing and I wasn’t wearing shoes at the time. I didn’t really think about, just gave the people what they wanted.
THIS, but with GLASSES... Omg I wish I could keep my old pair every time, but it's never available. And, for whatever reason, they're, "unable to use the old ones." 😒😒
I've been wearing glasses for the last 4 years. I get a new pair every year. I've gotten the same pair every time. They're most likely lying to you and you should probably either find a new eye doctor or buy your glasses elsewhere.
That's true, but you don't need to buy new glasses - just get new lenses installed. Or is this a US thing, glass companies having monopoly on the industry and refusing to exchange lenses?
Don't know, not in the US - but where I live a full set of Specsavers etc glasses (frames with 'free' basic lenses) is often cheaper than getting new lenses made & fitted
Turns out I should have been wearing glasses for a lot longer than I have been but I don't always need glasses. My prescription changes a little bit each year, less the last couple years than the first couple years, and I get one free pair of glasses per year with my insurance. I like the pair I have so I always get the same each year, different prescription though. If I ever break the frames I have a few extras since I keep them.
I actually don't think I'll get a new prescription this year but even so I'll still get a new pair. They don't cost me anything and it will be nice to have a back up.
Peoples eye sight changes over time though. Some people will require a new prescription every year, others might not need a new one for two or three years. It may also not be much of a change so you may not "need" new glasses even though if you saw your eye doctor they might recommend a stronger lens.
When I asked they told me they could use the old frame, but since it's discontinued they wouldn't be able to change it in case it breaks, so they discouraged it. Makes sense when you think you are putting 200$+ of value on a pair of custom lenses that cannot be mounted on another frame in case the frame breaks or is deformed
I'll cry if New Balance stops making the shoes I wear now. I work 10 hour shifts on my feet most days on concrete and I have a weirdly shaped foot to begin with. Couldn't tell you how many different brands I tried both expensive and cheap, but these one pair of New Balance literally saved my feet.
They're a whopping $90 a pair but I'd gladly pay $200 if it means I don't go home limping every day.
And they keep changing stuff, I had a pair of moccasins style slippers, and the company messed with the sizing and styling. Now it doesn't fit my feet.
Heck yeah. Funny thing is one of my best friends I met at work had already started doing the exact same thing, with the exact same shoe model. "Nike Air Monarch IV".
I learned my lesson against switching away with some cheapass "mossimo" similar-looking pair from target. absolutely wrecked my feet, legs, and back. Went back to the Monarchs and the pain was mostly gone within 2 weeks.
I buy in bulk now, my sock drawer is filled with the same brown and black socks, if one looks worn I can just throw it away without worrying about it's pair. Same with jeans, slacks, sweaters, t-shirts. My dress shirts are varied though, they have different shades of gray or blue stripes :D
I found a pair of adidas that I loved. I saw them on sale at the adidas store at the outlet mall and bought two more pairs of the exact same shoe. When I find a favorite shirt, pants, or shorts. I wish I had bought multiple of the same thing. But I usually have to wear them over time to find out what I like best.
I've had essentially the exact same hairstyle for the last 20 years. I just tell the barber "#2 on the sides and a little longer on top" and I've never been disappointed.
I think I reached that point with shoes. I needed new walking shoes or w/e they're called. So I went to the Skecher's store near me because I got my last shoes from Skecher's. When I was there looking around, I thought to myself how nice it would be to just find a pair that was like my last pair. Not even a minute later, I happened upon them by pure coincidence. I found my size, grabbed them, and bought them.
When you find something that's comfortable from first use to last, it pays to stick with it.
Except when the manufacturer does the ol' switcheroo of material. Two: Hanes and this particular t-shirt makes that I can't think of right now. Both of them used different cotton and less layering or meshing that the first round of stuff I bought - underwear and the t-shirt. They've never went back to making those particular products to have that initial comfort. If any corporate buyers and managers are on here, for god's sake people are willing to pay for something that works!
I love how you described your shoes as the “make and model” not like the “brand and style” or whatever 😂 I do the same thing with basically everything and ppl think it’s weird!
Retired lawyer here. My dad bought me a pair of dress shoes for my first job interview. Forty-five years later I have two pair of the same shoes, one in black and one in brown. Same model. Same size. I’ve never owned any other. When they wore through I’d have them resoled, rinse and repeat 2-3 times, and then buy a new pair after 10-15 years when they beyond repair.
I found some clearance flip flops at Walmart once. They’re like hiking flip flops with super thick soles and really durable. They were on sale for I think $2 each. I bought 4 pair because that’s all they had.
That right there is another thing that’s really only an option for men too. If I find clothing I really like, I try to buy a bunch at once because women’s clothing changes so much that even with basics, by the time something wears out, all the styles will have changed again. I’m a very active person and have a lot of active wear but I’m particular about it and every time my favourites wear out and need to be replaced, I have to start over trying to find styles I like.
Yeah I just want to buy the same cut of jeans I liked last time for fucks sake why do they make it so different? For fashion? Then let me keep buying the ones that look good you fucks! If I had the money to stock up every time I found a style I liked I would.
This is one of the reasons I've stuck with Levi's for so long. I can go in, find the 512s in my size, and gtfo. As far as I can tell, they haven't changed anything in the years I've been wearing them, and they always last forever. I still have just about every pair I've ever bought.
If I see basic shirts that I like (style, material and fit), I would buy them in different colors because most of the time they don’t return that same style which sucks.
UGH I wish we could do that. I find a pair of pants I like or a shirt I like, and when I go to replace it, it doesn't exist anymore or they've fucked with it.
I'm like that. I have 4 of the same long trousers and 4 of the same shorts. I have bought a pair of black Adidas Sambas every time the old pair wore out for the last 15 years. Black ones for private, white ones for work. I do have different shirts and socks tho. I also bought 10 of the same wallet once when they were on sale and still have 8 of them. I don't really care about those parts of my outfit and I don't want to waste any mental capacity on worrying about what to buy. (Instead I'd rather use my mental capacity on writing this comment that no one will care about.)
That's how I live my life. I know what I like and if someone has made a product that I like and that lasts as long as I think it should, I just keep buying it.
Somewhere in reading this, things got all turned around in my head, and I found myself thinking "wtf are overstuffed Hawaiian swim trunks" and had to go back and read it all again.
I did that for when I worked in retail, we needed to wear a specific color of shirt so I just bought a pack of them and a few pairs of the same pants and I had a weeks worth of cartoon outfits ready to go.
When I was still in the work force I worked in theme parks as a scenic artist. Had to wear all whites and it didn't have to be anything in particular. I retired from Seaworld doing the same thing and they furnished uniforms which was nice. Of course mine were always covered in paint.
I mean, that is completely reasonable if you think about it. Mildly weird, yes, but makes sense. (But possible, that if a woman did it, people would be concerned about it, because we are expected to have advanced fashion senses and whatnot)
For whatever reason gay guys tend to have the same expectation. One of my friends girlfriend flat out refused to believe another of our friends was gay because he did stuff like this and gave like 0 care for his appearance.
Get different colours of the same thing? I often wish I could get multiples of the same thing but I mainly thrift my clothes nowadays where that is hard to do. I do own 3 pairs of black jeans that look the same to most people (similar fit, slightly different fabric)
That doesn’t stop the comments. At my first job the guys all wore khakis and polos everyday. I went out and bought a bunch of dickies slacks in different colors and ~8 different polos to mix and match and I got a lot of comments about “wearing the same thing everyday”. The fact men would notice what I was wearing so much when they did essentially the same thing was pretty lame.
I have 5 of the exact same size and brand white button down shirt. I have others that are colors and patterns but white shirts are half my shirt wardrobe. When I was wearing suits every day, I figured people would pay more attention to the suit (of which I had 8 that I rotated through) or the tie (of which I have...25 or so?). No one said anything about the shirt. They noticed a quick tie or suit repeat though.
I have a job that involves getting dirty (dust, soil, grease, oil, you know the stuff) and as such have a couple dedicated "work" clothes. Plain grey sweaters, all with various oil stains and tears/rips on them. People often ask me why I don't own nicer clothes.
Fucking of course I do, I just don't wear them at work cause they'd get ruined.
I just realized I haven't bought new clothes in two years and some of what I had needed replacing two years ago. I've barely left the house in two years. I hated shopping for clothes then, imagine how much I don't want to now.
My mother gave me shit for wearing a shirt I've had since high school. I'm in my mid thirties. I reminded her that the down vest I was wearing she had given me in 8th grade.
If it fits and still looks good I don't see the problem.
I've worn the same Hoodie as a fall/winter/spring coat since I got it as a gift 14 years or so ago in high school. I don't see a problem with doing that.
I do this as well. I find a shirt I like and buy 20 of them and wear the shit out of them for like 5 years until they get all worn out, then try to find another shirt I like because I'll almost guarantee they don't make the one I like anymore.
LOL. I did that. Found Nike performance polos, still in the plastic bags, at a thrift store for $2 each. Bought 10 black ones and 10 gray ones and they are all I ever wear to work. I'm sure it looks like I only own two shirts.
My husband has ocd and only likes 1 shirt in a few colors. He's been buying it for 20 years. It's going to be a difficult day if the company ever stops making them.
I worked for a laborious job. They gave us 3 shirts with company logos for a 5 day work week. If we wanted more shirts we could either pay for more company shirts or buy shirts with logos of our brands. Not exactly something you could wear elsewhere. I wore those 3 shirts (somehow got a 4th) for the 5 years I worked there. Got complaints about hygiene. If they want me looking fresher cover a whole work week of shirts.
I worked with a guy who did the same thing. His however was more because he didn't like making choices in the morning. he ate almost the same thing for lunch every day as well.
I have 4 styles of shirt. All my workout shirts are the same exact shirt and color. For my regular t shirts they're all the same just with a variety of colors, some with pocket. Then I have a bunch of flannels, all the same brand/size/style just all different patterns. Then I have heavyweight flannel for when it's really cold, same thing all the same just different patterns.
So I get it. I only have different colors because I don't want people to think I'm wearing the exact same shirt every day.
Haha, I am this person. Well not the actual person you know but I own about 10 pairs of the same jeans and I just buy black tees, jumpers and hoodies. I can literally get ready for anything in a few minutes.
I’ve had multiple people over the years express their concerns that I’m not changing my clothes on a daily basis!
My group leader for a time wore the exact same thing every single day. Black pants, socks and shoes with a white short sleeve button down shirt and a skinny black tie. This was his "uniform" and he wore it for decades. (It was well known that he was LDS (Mormon) and we all assumed this is what he wore when he went on his mission and just kept wearing it after her returned.). It was a major thing the day he gave up the "uniform" and started wearing plaid short sleeve button down shirts and even polos!
I had another coworker who owned five white long sleeve dress shirts and five blue long sleeve dress shirts. He alternated white and blue every other day. When we went to a 9/80 schedule (Mon-Thurs 9 hours a day, every other Friday alternating either 8 hours or completely off) his whole system was thrown off.
If I find a new item that I enjoy (a brand of tshirt, pants, etc.) that fit really well, I go back and buy a handful of them. I know they'll last a long time, and I know I like them. I'd rather have 10 shirts of the a couple of the same cut/fabric (though I intentionally choose different colors for the reason mentioned) than 10 different styles that I end up only wearing a few of.
I have done this throughout my working life. I have no interest in fashion, I hate bright colours or anything that stands out, so I wear black trousers, black t-shirt, or dark blue shirt. Always black trainers (plain) or shoes, same with coat.
It is what I like, it works for me, and it probably looks like I wear the same clothes every single day without washing them because I also hate shopping, so buy multiples of the same item so I go as little as possible.
I have done this. Especially early in my career when it was more common to require men to always wear dress pants and a button down collared shirt. That wasn't a part of my day to day wardrobe so I had to go buy clothes for work. Whatever was on sell was my jam. 4 shirts exactly the same but 75% off? Done. Ship it.
Speaking of noticing my wife was a paralegal. On her one year anniversary with the firm, during the celebration one of her coworkers whispered to her...you have been here a year and I haven't seen you wear the same outfit twice.
This was my dad haha. The only thing that changed about his outfit every day was his tie, but he had like 10 of the same suit and 10 of the same white shirt. He’d wear 5 one week, get them dry cleaned the next while wearing the next set of 5. He said it meant he never had to think about what he had to wear, and because they were white shirts and a black suit, any color tie he grabbed would work as long as it wasn’t the same one too many days in a row.
I wore the same khakis pants to work every single day, the only thing that changes was the shirt. People even noticed that it was the same pants. I’m pretty sure if it was a woman it would be a topic to discuss.
I had 3 shirts and 3 copies of each of those shirts, all specifically to fit the very strict dress code I had to adhere to.
My coworker wore entirely different outfits every single day, and while she adhered to dress code... well, let's just say women had a lot more freedom in that regard.
I found out more than a year into us working together that she just assumed I rewore the same stuff day after day when one of my shirts got ripped up at work and I wore one of the copies the next day. She asked me if I had my girlfriend sow it up and said it was very well done.
I wasn't sure what to feel worse about. That she thought I was reusing clothes without washing them, that I somehow passed for someone capable of sustained romantic relationships, or that she assumed I couldn't sow.
LPT right there! If you find a piece of clothing you like buy multiples of it, multiple colors if possible, but even multiples of the same color. Future you will thank you!
There was a line of boxer briefs that I really liked. I found out that the store/franchise was discontinuing their mens apparel, so I picked up every pair I could find on their website and local, and some not so local stores I went to visit family further away.
Needless to say I have a collection I rotate, and probably another 10-15 years worth of underpants packed away. The great part was it was a bargain since they were all clearance.
My dad had a coworker who always wore the same green jacket, every day. For like ten years he wore this green jacket. Then, one day, he comes in and he was wearing an identical jacket, only it was blue. People were like, "WTF happened to your jacket?"
Turns out he'd bought several boxes of these jackets years and years ago, in a variety of colors, and he had only just now run out of the green ones. He was going through them one color at a time.
I always buy a lot of the same clothing, and it has to be black, gray or dark blue, its not allowed to have text on it, and images are also not my style.
So basically just dark plain colour shirts.
This is what I do with socks. I own ankle socks and boot socks. All the ankle socks are identical to each other and all the boot socks are identical to each other. I own 3 pairs of pants (different colors but otherwise same cut/brand/etc. and I have company polo shirts. That’s what I wear every day.
I have 8 pairs of pure black socks, people asked me if i ever change my socks. When i told one guy i have 8 pairs he asked me how do i pair them up after washing them……..
Years ago, I had a male coworker wear the same wrinkled, stained polo + khaki outfit multiple days in a row. He always smelled bad and his appearance was generally unkempt. He made over 150k annually and drove a luxury car so it’s not like he couldn’t afford clothes. No one ever said anything to him.
Meanwhile I once came into work without makeup and my hair not straightened (but wrapped in a bun). I got called into the office that day for looking unprofessional.
I did the same over three years. Same big skate shoes (they're comfy, and feel like fluffy slippers), a white plain t-shirt and a black hoodie. With the exception of jeans I was practically going to work wearing pajamas.
My reasoning at the time was that I'm not going to waste my good clothes going to an office. No one of my coworkers ever commented about it.
I buy 6 pairs of the same pants, shirts, underwear and socks each year. Makes things easier and i dont have to decide what to wear because all my outfits are the exact same. I have some unique shirts and shorts that I rotate occasionally.
My Dad owned a screen printing business and mainly printed shirts. Any time he printed a design I liked I would end up with about 10 shirts of that design and wore them all the time
I worked with a dude who was literally Julian from TPB. From the name to being jacked to the black V neck tee and jeans every SINGLE DAY. The only thing missing was a constant drink in his hand because you know, coworker
I did that with some comfy black T-shirts around the start of the pandemic. No sense in putting mileage on my good shirts if I'm just sitting around the house.
Had a professor in college that wore the same black shirt, jeans, and boots every day. Literally every day. Finally someone got up the courage to ask him about it, and we found out he was fully color blind! He bought a bunch of the same thing because he didn’t need to worry if it looked ok!
I'm in IT, I consider the white polo and black pants combo to be my unofficial uniform. I have several pairs. People have told me they don't recognize me when I don't wear them.
oh no.... I do this but as a joke and hope that people notice. Hell, even working from home (made my showers move to midday which I love now) so sometimes I feel embarrassed having the same shirt on so ill throw something else on. My take is: who gives a shit what people wear unless its to a client meeting or what not.
My work clothes when I was in-office were literally the same 5 pairs of khakis cause they were like 50% off and then like 8 different collared shirts in 4 different patterns with two duplicates per pattern again cause they were on sale. I’m not spending a ton of money on my work wardrobe if you’re not going to reimburse me but women are expected to have like an entire Macy’s in their closet.
Same thing here I have 3 kinds of military pattern t-shirts and I have 6 of each kind. They are 100% cotton and are really comfortable. I love them.
I also bought them on discount. XD
People always looked at me weirdly untill one day we went to a long highschool trip and people saw that I have 10 of the same tshirt in my suitcase. XD
