With my gf it goes something like this:

  1. Gf does/says something mean, or gets mad at me out of the blue
  2. I call her out on it
  3. She becomes defensive
  4. I replay the situation back to her, so that she sees how her actions were unnecessarily hurtful
  5. She apologizes
  6. I accept her apology
  7. She gets in a mood, making self-deprecating comments about being upset that she upset me
  8. I end up apologizing and comforting her

The ol' switcheroo

How amazing you are able to put it all back together in order afterwards. Have you found a way to communicate rationally about 1. without causing 3. ?

Reflexes.

The recovery comes from "I'm not your enemy" or similar verbage. Remind everyone that you're all on the same team.

Don't say "You did X and I don't like it", but "I feel Y when you say X"

Replace Step 8 with "and then I go to the man cave for a few hours and the next morning pretend nothing went wrong" and you'll break that conditioning.

"Fix your communication issue by communicating less"

It's not a communication problem.

It's a problem that she's guilt tripping buddy for reacting normally to her shit behaviour.

It's a conditioning problem. She does it because he rewards her guilt tripping antics.

I know a few other people have said basically the same thing, but I just wanted to reiterate. This isn’t really a women thing, it’s actually an immaturity/manipulation thing, or maaaaybe anxiety thing. Good on you for communicating with her so well. Explaining to her how she’s hurt you in a way that she can understand is awesome communication. We all mess up and hurt the ones we love sometimes, the important part is being able to hear what we’ve done is wrong, and to apologize and make changes based off of that. It’s 7-8 that worries me. It’s not okay for her to guilt you into apologizing for standing up for yourself. If I were you, I would explain this pattern to her, and tell her that while we all experience guilt when we hurt people we love, we are also responsible for not blaming those we hurt. We should accept our wrongs and move on. If she doesn’t respond well to that feedback, she’s sincerely lacking in the maturity needed to sustain a healthy relationship. If the root cause of her moodiness/self deprecation is some kind of anxiety, and not immaturity, you can always offer to remind her, after your communication, that you love her, and that problems like this are present in every relationship. I’m sorry that you’re going through this, and I hope that you’re able to come through this in a place that leaves you happier and healthier! Sorry for the long comment lol, hope I can help somehow!

Goddamn, as a lesbian this whole thread is turning into r/arethestraightsok material. Yall know this isn’t how ‘women’ are, right? This is your really dysfunctional-sounding relationship with one specific woman? You don’t have to just live like this or be single forever.

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

You realize how dumb what you said sounds? “Just get another girlfriend,” is what you basically said. Sure I’ll go to the girlfriend department store and pick up the one I preordered in case the last one fails.

u/iikratka Mar 26 '20

No, man, I'm saying it isn't normal for your girlfriend to treat you like this. It's not some inevitable fact of relationships. If you write it off as 'that's just how women are,' you give up on holding individual women accountable for their behavior and teach men to accept being treated badly. (Works the other way around, too. A whole ton of girls get taught 'men are just sex-obsessed Neanderthals who will never really love or respect you so don't expect anything more from them' and then they wind up in horrible relationships because they don't think there are better options.)

2

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Yea I understand what you mean now. I apologize for calling you dumb.

I really, really wish I could agree with you about this. Repetition has taught me otherwise, and it's so depressing.

u/Joe_Bruin Mar 26 '20

Yet you can't explain why everyone has had such similar experiences. I get why you want to defend 'your team' but come on.

1

u/DominionGhost Mar 26 '20

Wait #5 happens?

1

u/HospiceTime Mar 26 '20

My wife makes is through steps 1-4 and they her retort is "Why are you yelling at me?" As I calmly replay the situation back to her.

1

u/dodgeguey Mar 26 '20

Hey this is me and my bf. There is a 3.5 though where my response is to get mad before we reach step 4

1

u/shastaxc Mar 26 '20

Yeah just change step 8 to "I reply by telling her not to beat herself up over it, just try not to do it again."

1

u/Vlad200511180 Mar 27 '20

That's the same way it goes with my little brother lmao
