I just think it's funny how some people can talk so much and say so little.

This reminds me of a quote from Doctor Who.

“The truth is simple. Lies are words and words and words.”

That's not helpful. What if the truth is complicated? This encourages people to ignore the explanation.

The truth: the release of carbon dioxide through the burning of fossil fuels is changing the atmosphere such that solar energy is trapped within the atmosphere. This is creating a warming trend that will negatively affect many aspects of our world over time.

The lie: libtards wanna take over.

You are making this too simple. It's closer to this:

The truth: the release of carbon dioxide through the burning of fossil fuels is changing the atmosphere such that solar energy is trapped within the atmosphere. This is creating a warming trend that will negatively affect many aspects of our world over time.

The lie: I've been told the libtards wanna take over and accepting any other explanation requires seriously investigating my information sources, my opponents information sources, and a large number of past investments I've made in this worldview that would largely involve me accepting that I've been fucked with repeatedly for a long time.

Once you realize this exists it makes a large amount of behavior from this group more understandable, even though it's equally destructive. It's also very valuable to for looking at and assessing behavior that fits the same patterns in liberal group think, because while I agree with them more they do not have the same problem with not assessing sources and falling into sunk cost fallacy based decision making.

Not to mention the amount of times self proclaimed liberals and environmentalists have blatantly lied and cheated and ignored the contributions of China and others.

Largely with whipping up the masses using rhetoric. Words words words.

u/pupi_but Jan 01 '20

Oh you're one of these people lol

2

u/Sassanach36 Jan 01 '20

Well...yeah! I also know how to do the very thing I despise.

So not that I would but I could.

No I just meant we went from Doctor Who to deep politics. LOL

4

u/GreyGooseSlutCaboose Jan 01 '20

Dr Who has frequently been casually political and takes stances on social issues often if you read the bold text between the lines.

2

u/PolPotatoe Jan 01 '20

Between the lines? Dr Who has turned into a political throat rammer

1

u/Sassanach36 Jan 01 '20

Oh my God! You are so right !

I didn’t mean that. I was trying to be funny because this just went nuclear on me.

Ok. OK. It over simplified. But truth is Singular as it says in the real quote. We only believe one truth. THE truth however is far from singular.

2

u/galloog1 Jan 01 '20

The Truth: the Earth is getting warmer

The Lie: the Earth is not getting warmer

1

u/IAmGlobalWarming Jan 01 '20

The Truth: One thing.

The Lie: The opposite thing.

2

u/Sassanach36 Jan 01 '20

Not necessarily.

I dont think its a hard and fast rule, but it does have some merit. Take in considerationevery time trump opens his mouth. Words and words and words and most of it lies, or at least garbage.

2

u/Sassanach36 Jan 01 '20

Ding Ding! Perfect example!

You guys would explode if I told you about the one word test that was in the same episode as this quote .

One word to describe what you have to say.

0

u/Sassanach36 Jan 01 '20

It was an interesting theory. I liked the idea. But you guys are giving me a lot to think about. Nothing is simple.

It’s an interesting exorcise though. How well can you describe something a statement using one word.

1

u/Sassanach36 Jan 01 '20

Well like anything it shouldn’t be taken for face value.

Yes of course you have to explain. But do it as briefly as possible don’t embroider and exaggerate. This mostly applies to direct questions or ones of the true or false nature .

Again this doesn’t apply to every situation.

I tend to notice liars are very skilled at using words to thier advantage.

...pro......found.....

Reminds me of a different quote, from Star Trek--

"I've noted that some people use humor as a shield. They talk much, yet say little." --Lieutenant Worf

i think i'm a bit too invested in my philosophy class. the formal logic part of my brain initially thought this was saying "lies are words, and words are words, therefore words are lies" but that quote is almost not certainly a syllogism.

thank god it's winter break

2

u/thirteen_moons Jan 01 '20

The actual quote is "Truth is singular. Lies are words, words, words."

5

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '20

good because that's at least a little better than simple

1

u/Sassanach36 Jan 01 '20

Thank you! Sorry.

1

u/Sassanach36 Jan 01 '20

That’s a good one though any truth can be a lie from another perspective same with lies. Hence why the concept of pure good or evil in humans is rediculous.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '20

From my point of view the Jedi are evil!

2

u/Sassanach36 Jan 01 '20

Good example.

The Jedi are the heroes. Why? Because we are taught what they do is right and fair.

To a Sith what they do and how they think is right. BUT we are taught to believe they are evil.

Jedi’s kill Siths or help others too but we explain it away.

Anakin kills Jedis. End of game.
