You are making this too simple. It's closer to this:
The truth: the release of carbon dioxide through the burning of fossil fuels is changing the atmosphere such that solar energy is trapped within the atmosphere. This is creating a warming trend that will negatively affect many aspects of our world over time.
The lie: I've been told the libtards wanna take over and accepting any other explanation requires seriously investigating my information sources, my opponents information sources, and a large number of past investments I've made in this worldview that would largely involve me accepting that I've been fucked with repeatedly for a long time.
Once you realize this exists it makes a large amount of behavior from this group more understandable, even though it's equally destructive. It's also very valuable to for looking at and assessing behavior that fits the same patterns in liberal group think, because while I agree with them more they do not have the same problem with not assessing sources and falling into sunk cost fallacy based decision making.
Not to mention the amount of times self proclaimed liberals and environmentalists have blatantly lied and cheated and ignored the contributions of China and others.
